http://www.liveleak.com/view?i=004_1358809777 "200mph Plane fly-by within 2 feet of person !." 00:19 I can't decide if this video is fake or not. To be honest, it has a lot of the same characteristics as the "Eagle flies and picks up toddler" video from a few months ago that became Internet famous, and was subsequently proven fake/a video editing hoax, and having been produced and uploaded by a Canadian college of art/media or something as a project. Michael Scott posted:Thanks for that. For all intents and purposes, that wingtip touched the goddamn tarmac. Actually, it looks like it's pretty far off. It looks pretty real, shadows on the plane seem right, on the ground as well. The warping of the propellers is consistent with what a phone video would do. I'm not sure the exhaust would leave such a dark shadow itself, though. Also, what were those two doing on the runway while shooting video? I'm all for believing crazy videos in a world where crazy and stupid things happen and people are shooting videos and pictures with their phones all the time, though.

How the gently caress does that even happen?? For content, this is how Japanese schools teach multiplication of multi-digit numbers, apparently. I wish I had known about it back when I was in school, it took me forever to grasp the method we were taught because I was reading Animorphs inside my textbook that day. http://youtu.be/e-P5RGdjICo

Christo posted:How the gently caress does that even happen?? From what I understand, the "tube" going from the bird ovary to the cloaca has sort of a "hiccup" in its contractions, and the egg goes back up instead of down. Then the next egg just forms around the first egg. Now I wonder what the odds of getting a triple egg are...probably nill, since I doubt the poor chicken could pass it through her cloaca.

minato posted:It's a neat trick, but probably not as practical as the way we learn it. The examples they use always use low digits like 1, 2 or 3. Try doing 89 x 98 and you'll see why the method falls down. Actually, not really. You lay it out with 8 and 9 lines intersecting with 9 and 8 lines. Then you just bring it down to 9 x 8, 8 x 8 + 9 x 9, 9 x 9. Then work out the result using the rest of the method. I can see this being incredibly useful if you train it up like that, combine it with memorising times tables, you can visualise a large multiplication in your head, break it down to simple arithmetic and easily calculate large numbers.

To be clear, the method "falls down" with large digits because it involves drawing and counting a large number of items. The Japanese method doesn't require the user to know any multiplication at all, because they're just counting intersections. Knowing your times-tables defeats the point. You might as well just use the western method, since when you're determining the result of AB*QR (where ABQR are digits), you're just working out 100QA + 10(AR + QB) + BR, only you're doing it more efficiently than manually counting intersections because you know QA/AR/QB/BR from memory anyway.

I have difficulty understanding how anyone finds that method of multiplication either easier or faster than the way we are usually taught. Also, plenty of Japanese commentary on that video saying it isn't a Japanese thing at all. It doesn't even seem to teach you what multiplication actually does, either, it's just a trick do make the correct numbers spit out. Other ways... I just think the method is a way of teaching you how to visualise the equation, in which with practice would give you the ability to come to a correct or at least an approximate answer very quickly without putting a pen to paper.
