Collects Welfare posted:Netflix launched their remake of House of Cards today, and it shows a lot of promise. The production values are great, there are a lot of well-known actors (including, obviously, Kevin Spacey as Francis Underwood), and the tone seems spot on. So far my only complaint is minor. Francis Underwood hails from the South, and Spacey does not. His fake accent is pretty decent, but it is a little telling at times. Netflix is really dropping the ball on this. I loaded up the Netflix site earlier today and there's no mention of it at all. I looked under Recently Added and New Releases and it was nowhere to be found. They spent a lot of money on this series. It should be plastered all over the page so people will see it.

Yeah, it was all over my Ipad Netflix app, as well as the Apple TV Netflix. I would honestly have a hard time missing it, even if I wasn't awaiting it's release.

There's a big ad for it but I cannot for the life of my find the place to add it to my Instant Queue. I want to finish The West Wing first, dammit! e: never mind, I had to type it into the search bar and add it from there.

Had high hopes for House of Cards, but the first episode failed to grab me. I'll keep going with it, but even though I had the time I didn't move on with the second ep today. Spacey seems super over the top for the subject matter, though he kinda always does that. Based on the first episode there didn't seem like anything to like about any of the characters, every scene was people yelling or talking about why they should be yelling at each other. And I don't see what people are saying about the production values. Though maybe I was just distracted by the weird, kinda gross color palette. WHY IS KEVIN SPACEY SO ORANGE?

I thought HoC got better as it went on. First one was the worst IMO (I'm ep 7 now).

Yeah maybe I was having a bad day or something and was too down on the movie. I browsed through it again this morning and realized I was forgetting a lot of really funny scenes. I prefer the TV show to the movies but the first movie is still good. Gonna watch the second one tonight.

The production values are loving amazing, and not just because David Fincher directed the first two episodes, but because everything looks genuine and lived in. From the offices of Washington to the conspiracy theory trailer visited in episode two there's a richness to the set dressing and the lighting that is rarely seen on TV. I understand not liking the series, but don't blame it for you having weird color settings.

Well it's probably because the copyright holders know that this is their one chance to make money off of it. Like they know a bunch of people think it would be great to watch Groundhog Day on Groundhog Day so they pull it because they make much more money on people renting or buying it. Saem with horror movies before October. It's really not Netflix itself. If Netflix had their way they'd have every movie ever on their service. If they had their way they wouldn't even have a DVD rental service anymore.

Or that Netflix bought it for x years early in some previous October (or Groundhog day, as it were), so the contract expired on that early date, when years ago they were making it be ready for the holiday.

The worst product placement ever is in the show White Collar wherein every few episodes the characters do something like: FBI guy: We need to find the criminal! Argh, this traffic! FBI lady: Wait, FBI guy! With the Ford Whatever's traffic tracker system, you can see that the traffic clears up in two blocks! *multiple close-ups of buttons and screens showing you the features of this amazingly versatile Ford* FBI guy: These really are great cars! It's otherwise a pretty good show (though the premise starts to wear thin after a while) but here have a taste of how loving jarring the product placement scenes are: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p5RhYe3zBeI

Forgive me and ignore this if technical questions are outside the purview of this thread. Backtracking a few seconds or a couple minutes on Netflix streaming (on my PC) always requires loading again. Is there a way to make this smoother and more immediate? Through Chrome cache settings or Silverlight settings? Edit for another small question: anybody notice a whole lot of bad subtitles? For example there's plenty of times when the subtitler couldn't understand British English and put a question mark in for half of a sentence. Why wouldn't they use the same subtitles that would come with the movie's DVD, which are also often inaccurate but much better? Mescal fucked around with this message at 03:07 on Feb 3, 2013 |

The absolute worst for this type of thing is the new Hawaii 5-0 show. In EVERY show, they show off Microsoft products and Chevy(?) cars. Literally every episode there are several sequences where someone shows someone else how to use an MS product, highlighting its features, or they drive flawless cars in long helicopter shots along a waterfront highway. They even had an episode where everyone stopped and talked about how much they loved the quality and freshness of Subway sandwiches. That show purely exists for product placement. They can't get 10 minutes in the show without showing off a different product.

No, you're all wrong about the worst product placement. It's Minority Report: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sQo0N8tEnEM After Tom Cruise's character John Anderton leaves the precinct or whatever, he's bombarded from all sides by obnoxious advertising and I guess the intent is to convey how the retinal scanners are everywhere and he's never truly anonymous, but every ad is paid product placement. It's as aggressively obnoxious for the viewer as it is for Anderton. Plus the Bulgari watch. Is anybody who can actually afford a Bulgari watch really going to get the idea to buy one from a goddamn movie? Are there any good horror movies on Netflix that aren't either old classics, "haunted white girl" ghost movies, or gore porn?

axleblaze posted:I mean in here you explain why the scene with the ads is probably there and then you dismiss it, which confuses me. My problem with it is that it's shoved in my face. Yes, it's effective to literally beam images of your product into somebody's eyeballs and yell the product name at them, and it enhances the narrative of Anderton's fear and lack of anonymity, but it's loving obnoxious. Understanding why it's there doesn't make it any less ugly or obtrusive. As for "where products actually would be in real life", try Terminator 2. The Subway sandwich and drink on the table in the scene where the two cops are showing pictures of the T-800 to Sarah Connor and she steals the paper clip.
