Some of the screens are personal preference, that's for sure. But you'd be surprised how badly TVN mangles some things. I'd feel bad about capping old stuff if they weren't continuing to be terrible with the new stuff too. O-T tended to use "The night it all began" instead of Begins Night.

There's a lot of Game Center CX caps in the queue now. They screwed up a lot of stuff in the northernmost game center trip, not to mention most of the interviews they translated.

If the lady shouting "Scold me, Abe!" isn't accurate, I'm going to be very sad.

Can someone tell me what this means/says? It's a roof tile for reference.

"I stood there, wondering why the puck was getting bigger...

and then it hit me."

Just looks like the hiragana for the syllable "to" to me (I hope I got that right, anyway, I'm so rusty).

You're probably right. It's from the roof of the My Neighbour Totoro house they built so the other tiles probably spell out Totoro.

I'm a big Kamen Rider fan, and I agree with Hokuto. When you translate it using Japanese words, not only does it make it inaccessible to people who don't know any Japanese, it strips all of the character out of the text. The words that they say are untranslatable are sometimes actually more or less impossible to directly translate. But translation is not about being word-for-word, and a sentence can be changed around in so many different ways to convey the character that Japanese-speakers pick up on their own. That's why I can't stand TVN's ridiculous translation. (And also why I co-run a blog that makes fun of them)

I followed you on tumblr before I realized you were running it, I just found it in the GCCX tags and decided it was great fun for a tumblr, but you'll have more fodder if you make it not TVN specific, I think.

edit : yes, all that roof says is "to" in hiragana, just confirming.

I finally got off my rear end and watched Game Center CX in USA... what an amazing episode :D

I came up with a possibly dumb idea to show Arino the international love he's been getting since then, since he was surprised that 150 people went to see him in the first place, and now the DVDs are out worldwide!

So, I thought of a possibility - making a pin map, where everyone could add a pin to their location in the globe, and then we'd send it to Arino through twitter or something.

I've found this site, and started a map, but you need to register to add a pin. On the plus side, it does have comments.

Feel free to tell me if this is a horrible idea :v:

OK, that guy at the retro arcade in the part 1 episode is a man after my own heart. God bless him.

It was refreshing to see a retro arcade on the show that had properly maintained games. Good condition control panels, working sound, properly adjusted and converged monitors, and an owner truly looking after the classic games.

Speaking of challenges I'd like to see, I still can't believe Arino hasn't challenged Bomber King / Robowarrior! The game showed up previously during the games of 1987 segment but that was it. It just seems to have so much going for it that would make it a perfect fit for the show:

1. Developed by Hudson Soft.
2. A spinoff of the Bomberman series (honestly where the single player mode of Bomberman should have continued).
3. Some stages are deviously tricky in that you must recover a hidden item or the stage loops endlessly.
4. Brutally punishing powerup system where your energy meter constantly drains and must be replenished via items, damage is taken out of the same meter, and if you die then all your item inventory is halved on restart.
5. The second boss is a giant fire-breathing segmented dragon that is fought while lightning falls from above.
6. The Japanese version has a theme song with lyrics, accessed in a karaoke mode from the main menu after completing the first stage - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3ok24j1B3o

I suppose the game is somewhat repetitive but so are a lot of games featured on the show that made great challenges.

Good call! I first learned about Nazo Makaimura three or four years ago, and I was so unreasonably excited when I found out that there was an incredible machine game for the PSX that was themed on Ghouls and Ghosts that I went ahead and immediately got it off eBay.

Things that bother me about Game Center CX way more than they should: the Game Collection segment stops one game short of the last Famicom game release. And in the final Famicom Game Collection segment they featured two soccer games. You guys could have skipped one of those. :argh:

I just re-watched the Korea special and the segment in the following episode where they play the games they bought.

Did anyone ever figure out what that weird dancing game was all about? Is it just a single screen, or is there actually something to it? I tried Googling "Honriki Choumu Tenshi", but didn't get any results. I figured if anyone knows what its deal is, they're probably in this thread.

Searching for references in any language the only thing I could find is stuff about Game Center CX. My guess is that it's a graphics demo that was shoved onto a cart by some pirates. You get weird stuff when it comes to unlicensed Famicom games.

I don't really mind them too much as long as there's enough good footage of Arino loving up to justify it and/or the game is too long for one episode (like Yoshi's Island).

I listen to the Super Metroid soundtrack when it's a dark and a rainy day.

And yeah, that arcade owner was way better than some of the guys we've seen. He obviously cared a lot about the games. It always bugs me out to go to an arcade and see half the machines with the "BROKEN" sign on them.

That's the difference between a retro game museum and an afterthought arcade on a department store rooftop or in a hot spring hotel basement. The guy's whole business is (obviously lovingly) maintaining and preserving old games, presenting them in the best possible light.

That makes me wonder: would there be an actual market in a "classy" arcade? Like, similar to a casino layout with fancy mahogany cabinets, where the machines are on a crazy-regular maintenance schedule to basically always perform as if they're new? I feel like there'd be something to that, although probably not a profitable something.

I would go to an establishment like that. Pay 10 € at the door and play as long as you like, all the machines are free.

Arcades as a whole have all but died here in Finland anyway. You find an odd pinball machine or an arcade cabinet in gas stations and such, but in major cities, there are no arcades. There are casinos, though. I'm not sure what killed the arcades, is it the fact that handheld consoles made their breakthrough or that cellphones and tablets are nowadays "busy" gamers choices for a quick fix? To me, going to a local arcade was always an exciting feeling, like going to the movies. It's just not the same at home, no matter what kind of rigs you have.

There's a place like that in my rinky-dink town that opened about three months ago. Wonderful place with a great collection but just about all the machines need some kind of work. They just got a Space Harrier in last week that should be up soon so I'm looking forward to going out this weekend to try it out...
