But there's like half a million versions to it. There's the original French, the Russians have a different version, there's the English version, and then there's the American version which appears in the IWW's Little Red Songbook. And that's just the most common ones.

This site is really breaking me. I've been challenging myself to reach out to people that I disagree with to find some common ground, or to at least in a positive dialogue. I guess I'm too much of an idealist; obviously that's not possible on TPC. The vitriol, and hate, and willful ignorance even when they're confronted with the truth is really weighing on me. Living in Texas, my perception of the general public's opinion on things is usually pretty skewed. Luckily, I just found this article: in January, Rasmussen found that only 8% of U.S. citizens identify as Tea Party members, down from 25% just two years ago. At the same time, 49% of Americans reported having an "Unfavorable" view of them. So, I guess there's some hope.

I think at least part of the reason for the slide in support is that the media didn't really go in depth on the Tea Party views, so people in the country kinda only had the whole No New Taxes angle. That's easy enough to support if you're middle class/working poor, cause they pay a huge chunk of the taxes in this country. Then you get to the Tea Party political cadidates. Some of them get elected and, literally on the first day, start pushing through the most archiac, pro-corporation/wealthy legislation they can as quickly as they can. Fracking on public lands, huge education cuts, voter ID laws, pretty much anything that damages the public in some way. Then the more hateful rhetoric starts coming out in spades, because the Tea Party gets the idea that they've got a mandate to change the country. All the while the Koch brothers and their ilk laugh amongst themselves as they reap the benefits of a country they're actively trying to destroy. I'd like to believe that a majority of the people in this country, even within the more conservative parts, are not that stupid. Most of them could see what was going on and jumped ship, rightfully so.

The ATF was investigating them because several neighbors kept reporting automatic fire from the compound. It was suspected that they were buying legal AR-15 parts and converting & assembling them into illegal M-16-like automatics.

The NRA used the Waco siege as an excuse to lobby later in the Bush years to severely cripple the ATF - which until Obama started doing stuff about it recently, was looking pretty shabby. Which is why it's incredibly hypocritical of Wayne Lapierre to complain that 'existing gun laws are not being enforced.' No poo poo - that's because you pushed to make sure that they didn't get enforced by disempowering the agency that enforces them. Spacedad fucked around with this message at 06:15 on Mar 1, 2013 |
