Start in North America or Africa. You can technically do it with other countries but those are the easiest. Get your first abduction mission by the 7th, take engineers, immediately start building a workshop. By the 11th order 4 satellites, they'll be discounted to $77 each due to your engineers. You'll probably need to sell some stuff to pay for them. To help with the cash you can choose to avoid shooting down the first small UFO you come across to get a medium one instead, but that's optional and personally things run just fine for me shooting down the small one. As soon as the workshop is finished building, build a satellite uplink next to your current one. It will finish pretty close to the end of the month, at which point you launch your four satellites wherever you want. If you start in NA, a popular choice is all of Africa + Russia and if you start in Africa, grab the U.S., Russia, and two $100 of your choice (or SA). Alternatively launch wherever you want or need panic reduction. It's a great way to have a massive cash influx for your second month, at which point you can rest on your laurels and go back to a sane satellite development program. If you're insane though, you can rush for 3 more satellites by the end of month 2, for a total of 8. At that point you're pretty much set for cash, limited only by panic levels or resources.

This is totally untrue. Rapid Reaction, like Sentinel, will grant a second reaction shot only if triggered a second time. There is a rare situation where a single movement can take a unit out of LOS in the middle of the move but still end its single move within LOS. In this case, and this case only, will multiple reaction shot perks allow multiple shots to hit the same target on the same move.

I had a feeling I was missing something. Does this take time? (like transferring to another continent takes three days, and changing guns takes one?)

You can (usually) carefully sneak between the shipping container and the central building thing to get to the upper right, and if you wake up some aliens on the way you can just dash back to the full cover to the left of the Skyranger.

I started recording a new I/I run earlier today and as luck would have it this is the map I got for the intro mission, and the video probably better conveys what I'm trying to describe (no casualties again, too, though I'm a bit lucky as I get impatient at the end and allow a firing opportunity at a soldier in half-cover that I could perhaps have prevented with more cautious play).

I've had a Cyberdisc (back in the day) get two-shotted by some random heavy with double overwatch during a single movement. I'm sure I could be convinced something else happened, but much like Close Combat Specialist, it just seems very inconsistent.

I've just learnt to accept that the aliens will always hit and you will always miss so my battles are just now a case of retreat and overwatch over and over again.

Also I just had my first teleportation glitch which involved a sectopod and two drones appearing on my flank while I was already fighting another sectopod/drone unit.

Are we still waiting on word from Firaxis about patching the teleporting packs/bullshit reveal across the map bugs? I really love this game but had to put it down out of frustration when running into said bugs several maps in a row.

Last time I tried playing a pack of mutons activated at the end of the turn, after I'd finished moving people. I don't even know how that's loving possible. They went on to flank and kill my best soldier once my turn ended.

I play with this perk quite a lot in MP and SP, and I have only seen it trigger twice in the same movement when that movement carries the unit momentarily out of LOS, in which case it will always trigger a second time (if Sentinel or the first was a hit with Rapid Reaction). CD's have a very large movement radius, so I have no trouble believing that this happened in your case.

I just started playing recently and I haven't really kept up with this bug, but it seems like there should be no reason why it ever would exist in the first place.

When the map loads, the human spawn and "fog of war" is already determined. Why aren't the alien spawns then randomly distributed and locked down at the point of the map being loaded?

Are the alien spawns moving around randomly to discourage people from saving and retrying their game if they mess up?

Spawn clusters have a patrol pattern that they cycle through until they are revealed, of positions along a route that they move to. You can see this happen if you stealth up to them via Ghost Armor or spot them via the Sniper spy grenade and don't reveal yourself, as they do not counter-detect and thus are not properly activated. This behaviour has never been... quite right, shall we say.

No. They don't move around randomly at all. The packs on certain maps follow various patrol routes and they move along them by warping, because it would take forever and a half for the aliens turn to end otherwise. The bug is when the patrol fucks up and intersects with your squad's current position.

ChronoReverse

I've done a bit of reload testing and it does appear that the alien positions change each time you reload from the save (as in, they're not in the same place after subsequent loads). It's rather strange and it also often leads to teleportation bugs.

I don't mind it too much at the moment but I imagine on ironman it's infuriating. It would be nice if they did actually move as you could set up ambushes. I didn't know the mechanics of it and earlier I set up to ambush a group of elites. They then teleported to the other side of the map so I spent 2 turns repositioning and then they teleported back to the first spot.

You dedicated souls are the reason why Jake Solomon will probably have to dedicate a LOT of time making 800 maps for the expansion or, if he's smart, consider randomly generated maps like in the original.

By the way, any word whatsoever on a possible expansion?

Yeah, no news, but Firaxis has always been like that. Silent as the grave when a patch comes out, often leaving modders to patch their stuff unofficially. At least, that's how they've always been acting in Civilization IV and V. The funny bit is that many of these unofficial bug fixes make it into the official patches later.

A drat shame that Microsoft and Sony are basically standing in the way of a patch that, if the game were on PC-only, would probably have been out for a month or so by now.

To be fair, Beyond the Sword and Gods and Kings were expansions, not patches. But, after the penultimate BTS patch there was a long time where no official patches were made despite unofficial patches doing the job. When the last patch rolled out a few months had gone by...

So yeah, Firaxis is slow as hell updating their games, but I assume part of that is the dev team working on patches vs. working on another game.

I hadn't played this game since November and I popped it in today to continue a classic game I had abandoned pretty early. The first couple missions went smoothly.

Then I had an abduction mission on one of the graveyard maps. I moved my sniper into full cover and threw a battle scanner directly ahead. Nothing seen. I positioned my heavy across from the sniper in full cover and popped overwatch. For lack of options, I moved my assault into half cover below them and hunkered down. I did the same with my rookie.

6 loving FLOATERS TELEPORTED BETWEEN MY 2 OVERWATCH TROOPS AND MY 2 HUNKERED DOWN TROOPS THE MOMENT MY TURN ENDED.

Now I'm pouring one out for another rookie and my star sniper is wounded.

This loving game. :smith:

It sounds like a vast, vast majority of bugs happens with Hunker Down. I tested it yesterday on an I/I run on the first map: I put my squad into cover immediately next to the Skyranger, hunkered everyone down, and BOOM: six sectoids IMMEDIATELY warp in front of my guys. This was in the FIRST alien turn.

If I were patching this game, I would treat the fog of war caused by Hunker Down as "visible terrain", as if my soldiers had not hunkered down at all, for the purposes of alien patroling and movement. That would probably avoid a lot of teleporting bugs.

In my short bit of playing, the only two times I have ever seen anything that might be the teleporting bug happened while my guys were all hunkered down with no visible aliens in sight. Alien turn ends, my guys pop up and aliens are right in front/beside us.

It happens even without hunkering down. Last night I was doing one of the Supply Ship maps where you start to the side of the cargo entrance. I sprinted everyone up onto the ridge (after leading with a ghost support to make sure it was clear), and then on the second turn had a pack of heavy floaters and a beserker + buddies show up well inside my view range.

Luckily for me I had just had two guys pick up mind control, so I MCed one of the Mutons and one of the Floaters. That gave both packs something convenient and in the open to shoot at, so I was able to kill the rest of them on my next turn.
