Waroduce posted:Hello, rap goons. I am writing a paper about the concept of freedom as discussed by Marcuse, Camus and Sartre. The class is taught by a PH.D candidate who's relatively young (around 26-28) who is a big rap fan. He likes Talib Kwali, Mos Def, and prefers Tupac to Biggie. I asked him to help me with a paper and we ended up discussing older rap, as I'm a pretty big fan of Rakim, Treach, The Roots, NWA and Biggie. Anyway, I've successfully worked in relevant quotes from Tupac and Common, but I'd like one more. I want to lead the paper off with a nice quote about freedom from another rapper, but nothing is coming to mind at the moment. Would anyone have a suggestion by any chance? pick a good goodie mob song and listen to more rap music

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-SF_-YXjvoY I think FF is trying to grow and enter some conscious material. Interesting discussion about gun violence and ineffective enforcement, sorta like Lupe's "Little Weapon" or a proto "Reagan"

MACKLEMORE & RYAN LEWIS - THRIFT SHOP FEAT. WANZ is loving awesome. Not since the Humpty Dance has Rap/Hip Hop reached such heights. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QK8mJJJvaes Song is not work safe due to language. I love silly fun stuff like this, are there other songs along this vein? I've also sent this video to my cousins in Pakistan. They love American media and I'm curious what they'll think or want to understand the references from this. Gatts fucked around with this message at 01:58 on Mar 6, 2013 |

To Pimp C haters, listen to this first verse if you don't think he can do flipflap verbal gymnastics like Bun B can: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Dq_SLI3FjNc I need a late pass on it too; it's apparently off his second solo album "Pimpalation." And here's another old song I know and love from UGK. It's about how pimps are necessary in the current pimpin economy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vvdmCwruVnM The beat is sorta corny (it's from 2001) but I like it enough.

I hope everyone's been listening to Indigoism from the Underachievers. Really really dope album with a lot of highlights. Self-called "conscious" rap (meaning, to them, that they take a lot of acid and eschew traditional gangsta stereotypes). Pretty tight lyricism. I see a bright future for these young guys. Free on datpiff. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bCrcLYcZXKI Also, Czarface by 7L, Esoteric, and Inspectah Deck is amazing, somehow managing to sound totally classic 90s east coast but also very progressive. That one's not free. Eagerly awaiting Pusha's new album because his mixtape Wrath of Caine was super dope. Play fucked around with this message at 04:51 on Mar 6, 2013 |

Indigoism has been brought up a couple times and yeah it's a really cool album. I've got to disagree about Wrath of Caine though, I'm a big Pusha fan but I really didn't care for that mixtape. Someone brought up Gorgeous Children in here recently, they just came out with a new song tonight http://www.purpletapepedigree.com/?p=10451 edit: I'm still looking forward to My Name Is My Name though 7 RING SHRIMP fucked around with this message at 05:03 on Mar 6, 2013 |

I have to admit not caring much for Esoteric in the past.. something about his enunciation, maybe its his accent (but this doesn't hold water cause his speaking voice has very little Boston in it), always threw me off- he's got a mush mouth thing going but I had an a-ha! moment with him somewhere along the line (AOTP prolly) and now I find him pretty fuckin impressive on most everything. macklemore isn't really bad he's just one of those technically skilled but otherwise boring forgettable dudes and have fun doing anything after thrift shop that isn't thrift shop again cause no one is going to give a hell
