I'm looking for something in the vein of Ratatat to listen to while working. Something to keep my energy up but also nothing with distracting vocals. I haven't looked for new music in a few years and I don't listen to much electronic, so here's what else I have and my notes on them: Air is okay but it can put me to sleep; Daft Punk (excluding Discovery) works but not as well as Ratatat for some reason (I think Ratatat has more of a.. melodic and harmonic component that pleases my neurons); Neu! and Stereolab (not really related to any of these but motorik works for work, although Kraftwerk gets me too spaced out). Justice is a little too spazzy. Julia Kent's faster, more rhythmic songs work OK for a bit of a change in pace.

Basically think of what you'd listen to on Adderall and you have 10-page paper to do overnight. (This is not actually my situation.)

I know this is a relatively old post, but I've been stuck on this Sebastien Tellier song for a while:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GhyeenGUKZU

And, relatedly, I was wondering if anyone in the thread can help suggest other electronica/pop songs - like this one - that contrast a smooth, simple track with an anachronistic track.

Recommendations for good Electroswing/R&B? I'm new to the genre (and all electronic for that matter) - the only artist I know is Parov Stelar. I definitely prefer tracks that are swing-heavy and only lightly embellished, i.e. not overproduced, intense club music.

Heard an awesome remix of I Got Fever out one night and can't get it out of my head.

VVV good stuff, thanks!

I've absolutely fallen in love with Delta Rae's 'Bottom Of The River', and I'm pretty much looking for anything and anyone with a similar gospel-but not too gospel-y folk rock sound. I'm an absolute sucker for Percussion and Choir like that. Unfortunately, I'm not even sure where to start, as this seems to be the only track of that type they've done, and 'Gospel Percussion' and 'songs like this' searches get me a whole lot of church hymns and things entirely unlike it.

Just got into the mood to listen to the Mountain Goats song No Children over and over again. Does anyone have any other angry, sad, and aggressively bitter songs that don't come off sounding like they come from a place of anger? That's what I love about the song: it's not some sreamo yell-y frustrated thing, it just tells it like it is in a magnanimous and straightforward way, that it comes from the perspective of a person who isn't wallowing.

There is a whole subgenre of hardcore called d-beat. It is named this after the drumbeat used by Discharge being referred to as the Discharge beat, the d-beat. Pretty much every d-beat band is Discharge worship, and subsequently sounds a lot like Discharge.

So I've fallen hard for Adam and the Ants' Kings of the Wild Frontier and it's the first time that I've been so utterly addicted to an album in a long, long-rear end time, and I want more like it. Specifically like that album, and not like any other A&As/AA albums, or Bow Wow Wow or anything like that. I really like the big thunderous drumbeats and the crazy multi-layered vocal harmonies and the general deep-glammy-bombastic sound, where everything is really garish and catchy and still kinda lo-fi and intimate at the same time. I'm reasonably familiar with a lot of the artier New Wave/New Rom contemporaries, but none of them seem to sound quite as special.

So I've been into Warren Zevon (especially Excitable Boy), PJ Harvey, and The Tiger Lillies lately. I guess basically what I'm looking for is stuff with very darkly humorous lyrics. The genre doesn't matter much, I'll check out anything.

Also looking for some female solo or female fronted rock in the vein of Sleater-Kinney, PJ Harvey, Patti Smith or Tegan and Sara.

I'm also interested in finding some dark/surreal synth pop similar to The Knife's Silent Shout.

Any recommendations appreciated, thanks!

Randy Newman is probably the most obvious parallel to Zevon, and John Prine has some similarities as well. Others maybe worth looking into are Vic Chesnutt, the Kinks, Lambchop, early Blur, and eels. For the second part, Nina Nastasia x100, Team Dresch, Lois, the Breeders, Liz Phair's first album, and Heavenly. Got nothing for the third bit.

Fever Ray is Karin Dreijer Andersson's solo project. Olof (her brother who is the other half of the Knife) isn't involved.
But as mentioned, it's a lot less dancey and generally all about meandering rhythms, anxiety and moans.

Where I can find more "dark" sounding Italo disco like this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lsGsXLjEG-o?

I love the upbeat pop Ryan Paris/Ken Laszlo/Gary Low type stuff, but I am really fascinated by sounds more akin to this track. Johnny Jewel's projects (Chromatics [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0mxXrHowHQ], Desire [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9K7rmxjk5RQ]) are a pretty good example. The snare sound with that slight delay/reverb is part of it, I guess, but also slower tempos, palm muted guitar, vintage analog synth sounds with reverb.

Also to add to Beeswax's great post above, I would also rec this awesome new group, Postiljonen, if you like that sort of stuff: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1P344cfTQpU

As for mathcore bands similar to Rolo Tomassi, I would highly recommend The Number Twelve Looks Like You if you haven't heard them. No synths and no female vocals, but they have similar ways of writing songs.

I'm looking for music with a relaxed/light sound and soft-spoken female vocalists. Indie Rock (?) with guitars is O.K., but I also enjoy harps, piano, and violin. While searching through similar genres is possible, the voice matters a lot more than the exact style of instrumental music, and that's a lot harder to search for. Donna Lewis is, in my limited musical knowledge, the quintessence of what I'm looking for in this regard.

French artists are also acceptable, as I am comfortable enough with the language to enjoy it (I adore Carla Bruni's work).

Examples:

Lindsay Foote: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gFkS7SdQzKY
Frente!: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f2sPV7Nm148
