If anyone hasn't taken Battle Scanners before I highly recommend them as a mean of watching the game break in real time. When I think turn based tactics, I think enemies warping from one edge of the map to the other while I have indirect vision on them.

I can understand the teleporting thing as a time saver when you don't have vision of the path they're taking. When I realized there is no path and the aliens will completely ignore the rules of movement while warping, and so blatantly at that, I was just a little miffed.

I had to do it over two turns - somehow one rocket hit the boss and his entourage, but only damaged the Mutons. And gently caress redoing the mission, it took 30 minutes. Now, off to Impossible, I guess? I never thought of using the console though - I haven't played any Bethesda games.

I don't know how you guys are even playing. I want to like this game but I'm constantly losing all my best guys because they're getting injured and just never recovering. Are we really stuck without a patch just because they can't make an x-box one?

Are we really stuck without a patch just because they can't make an x-box one? Are you sure? There's no big fanfare when a soldier is available again. Just a little info message at the lower left when scanning for activity, you just might be missing it. Also, they don't automatically get reinserted into your group. You have to manually remove the guys that took their place and readd the original, injured soldier.

There's something in the works (there was a trailer posted a few pages back with the council guy talking about "another force" or some such thing) but it's anyone's guess as to what it actually is. Couple DLC missions, expansion, sequel, who knows?

That seems likely. I haven't exactly been keeping up, to be fair, but wasn't one of the reasons we have yet to see a major patch because of patching limitations on the Xbox? I'm willing to bet a big-rear end downloadable expansion would be an effective - and profitable- way to circumvent that.

There exist situations where the stars do align, the shots do connect, and the agent wearing ghost armour would be dead while the titan wearer survives. No. Just no. Ghost lets you avoid any "worst case scenario" by simply ghosting when revealing too many enemies. Or, if in high cover, hunker down + ghost gives -100% instead of -80% to hit, also eliminating any "worst case scenario". If you need the extra HP from Titan you are playing it wrong.

Playing again after a while. Is it just me or did this game get even buggier? I've been having units fall through the geometry, gotten "no available targets" messages when there are enemies clearly visible, and gotten infinite enemy activity loops where I didn't get those before.

That, or putting a designer at the head of a huge team that he has never worked with before just didn't seem like a smart decision in any kind of context. For remaking XCOM, they didn't really need fresh ideas either. The concept was there already. The basic framework of the gameplay was there already. The majority of the design-work was basically giving X-COM a massive usability overhaul and streamlining the technical details of the gameplay. Getting Julian on board just for that seems a bit unnecessary anyway, since Firaxis isn't exactly known for lacking competent designers experienced with turn-based gameplay.

I tweeted Jake Solomon a while ago asking him to do Terror From the Deep next and he actually replied with surprise that anyone wanted it. Am I alone here that I want a TFTD in the style of the new X-COM or what?

TFTD was legitimately the most frustrating videogame experience of my life, I'm not sure if I ever want to see it again in any form. I think my first base mission (with savescumming and 100% aliens killed) literally took me 6 hours to clear, and don't even get me started on the mandatory trawler missions. The atmosphere was quite cool though, and I really liked some of the more surreal enemy designs. I would like to see some of that return.

# ? Apr 2, 2013 21:47 |

Yeah, the atmosphere was really cool but the game itself was actually quite bad. To be fair, I never managed to beat TFTD without cheating while I beat UFO Defense first try and was shocked how much easier and less grindy it was.

Am I alone here that I want a TFTD in the style of the new X-COM or what? TFTD was awesome, but it was also the first Xcom game I owned. I played the original one before that, but it was my friend's, and so I only played when I'd be at his house. I like some of the little UI changes they made, which make playing the first one less enjoyable for me because I'm used to them. A simple one is the 'save TU for a Snapshot' toggle. In Xcom1, you have to toggle that back on for every single soldier, every turn. In TFTD, it remembers the setting between turns. It was also stupidly hard, and I had to cheat myself money to win. I assume if they made a TFTD expansion for the new Xcom, it wouldn't be quite as soul crushingly hard.

Andre Banzai posted:Holy crap, why is Julian Gollop not working with Jake on the XCOM franchise? It's probably better to have games be the vision of one designer. Mixing in a second (or a third, if Sid's still involved) doesn't necessarily mean a better game. Presumably Firaxis wants to develop Solomon into his own brand, with his own line of games, and making him into what would be seen in many people's eyes as Gollop's understudy would probably not work with that. Anyway, I want an Apocalypse remake, not TFTD. EDIT: The long standing problem with Firaxis's system seems, to me, to be that successive 'star' designers have found themselves feeling smothered by the "Sid Meier's" banner and ended up leaving the roost. (See: Brian Reynolds, Jon Shafer, Soren Johnson...) Which leaves the studio being at risk of being a one-trick pony. I get the impression that Firaxis is deliberately breaking from this with XCOM, so that's why Solomon is being provided with a bit more space. I think he also said previous that having everything be underwater kind of takes away from the close-to-home, familiar nature of the threat. Having aliens invade cities and towns and such makes it personal, no one gives two fucks about aliens taking over the atlantic. Some water levels in an expansion or some of the TFTD aliens would be sweet though.

I'm calling it now. Waaaaaay back I said I thought that having some human collaborator enemies (a la MAJESTIC 12 for the conspiracy fans) would be neat. Someone who could show up to collect alien stuff and be a spoiler (maybe 3 way fights?) on the tactical map. You would have human and hybrid enemies, new tech, etc. Also I bet there will be a tile-based "procedural" random map system for play longevity.

They just needed to add a bit of Laser Squad to Civilisation. e: in fact his whole attitude was wonderful. Sometimes glitches might cause you to lose a dude. Sometimes they might secure you a free kill. The most glitchy levels (alien base, final level) are restartable even on ironman. Most players (myself included) have gotten through ironman classic or even impossible successfully without hitting anything game ending, and had a good time doing it.
