I'd say between 10 and 50 million.

Even with medieval population densities, yeah, it's got to shy on the upper side of the 10 to 20 million range, compared to any other figure here. We didn't see the kind of squalor that would be in place if it was much denser than that, and 1 million with roughly 1700s era farming to support the population would be quite sparse over an area that large.

Which suggests that the breach of the wall has just rendered unsafe the dwellings of about 1 million people. (This is working on the assumption that some people get to actually live in the rural areas).

I'm looking at it now, and it says 100km between Maria (outermost) and Rose (middle), 130km between Rose and Sina (Innermost), and 250 between Sina and the center. It even has measurements written on the graphic itself. Seems pretty clear that the total radius would be 480km.

For reference:

250+130+100 = 480 km radius
=> 723,823 square kilometers

Russia is 23 times bigger. The US are 13 times bigger. It's roughly as big as Zambia, Chile or Burma. France is 10% smaller and Germany is only half as big.

By the way: Fance is way bigger than Germany and has a population of 65 million while Germany has a population of 81 million... Zambia on the other hand has a population of 13 million. Considering that in the medieval times only a third or a fourth of those densities were possible and the fertility of the land is the same as Western Europe, I think around 20 million is a good guess.

I'm somewhat interested in whether the humans have any recollection of when and how the giants appeared, and also how the walls were built (in the light of the danger.)
The giants somewhat remind me of the god warriors from Nausicaä, maybe a similar genesis?

It sounded like it was longer that and they just hadn't been attack for 100 years. Unless I misremember.

Well, within the first two minutes or so I was thinking the adaptation looked like a good one. Just that first scene with the silence and the hand and I was optimistic. By the end I was convinced. The Titans are even freakier in motion and with sound. Creepy sods. 3D Gear is more interesting with sound and movement too. Gosh, I think this adaptation is going to be really good. :allears:

Think I'll have to start reading the manga again though. I was leaving it until there was a bit of a buffer, but there should be quite a bit now.

Estimating populations is pretty difficult without yet knowing the setting's history. France, for example, had a population nearing 20 million during the middle ages, and then the Black Death happened and upwards of 50-70% of a population would die in an outbreak area, which drastically diminished Europe's population. So while it's certainly possible that around 20 million people live in the walls, there's also a really good chance that that isn't the case due to giant death monsters and other problems.

This is most likely. Even if every one of those 20 million people worked towards building those walls (which is impossible, they would need soldiers to keep the giants distracted and away from the workers) it would take longer than a century to build all of the walls.

I'm thinking either they build Maria first and moved inward, or they built Sina first and moved outward. It seems odd to think that they would build all three at exactly the same time.

I believe it's mentioned in the manga that they've generally got male features, and the ones that look more feminine are rare cases. This could be just me projecting as well though, so it could be wrong. And yes, they lack any reproductive organs, and in the manga we've not seen anything to indicate they'd need them either.

So, on a related note... there's a ton of mysteries in this story, and a lot of those mysteries still haven't been answered in the manga. Is it a spoiler to say "even the manga holds no answers"?

But a lot of people on MAL are dumb, so I'm not sure how reliable these things are.

Yeah, same. Even if it's an ending that blows, it'd still be an ending instead of an advertisement for the manga. Plus, it's not like an anime original ending would invalidate the manga.

What is so bad about reading manga? If the story is good, you should be interested in continuing it regardless of the medium. Getting more people to read the manga is a good thing, especially since it makes it more likely that a second anime season will actually be made, and they can actually properly wrap it up without sacrificing quality.

I watched the first episode this morning. I was pretty impressed. I've heard about the manga and a couple of minor details like Misaka is awesome but seeing everything for the first time was a real treat. I'm definitely watching this each week. I'm torn on if I want to catch up in the manga first or let the series run then catch up.

Man, the designs of the titans were amazing. They spanned the entire spectrum from the hyperrealistic (their eyes) to the completely bizarre (:gonk: that smile), with the actual human characters being just a little dot in the middle with their very clear-cut anime designs and hard contour lines.

But what I loved most was that the show trusted it's audience to take in the premise of the titans without any boring exposition text or half-baked explanations. The Titans just are, end of story, deal with it, etc.

I actually really like the character designs that they've released so far. This isn't spoilers since it's more or less promotional material, but when our protagonists join the military they have a unisex uniform and it turns out that Misaka is loving ripped. It's such a wonderful change of pace.

To be fair, you also see them in uniform in the opening. It doesn't seem like spoilers more than the actual premise of the series.

I don't have any problems with reading manga, but I'm more of an anime guy. I prefer adaptions that can stand alone on their own merits and I don't mind when liberties are taken when adapting the source material. I just feel that suddenly ending a show and telling people to read the manga is an incredibly lazy copout and I really hope it doesn't come to that (ending with an announcement for a second season would be fine, though!).

Plus, with an anime I know it's gonna be a specific amount of episodes. I know this show is gonna run for what, 26 or so episodes? With manga until there's an official announcement of when it'll end, I have absolutely no idea how long it's gonna be. I have no objections to reading the manga, but I don't want to follow something that could go on for years and years; I'd rather read it when it's over. I know that a lot of people do enjoy that, but I personally tend to burn out when I try to keep up on manga.

e: To elaborate a little more, I think that if say, Game of Thrones (tv) were to end this season but still accurately adapt the book, a lot of people wouldn't like being told that they should read the books if they wanted closure.

VVVV let's assume this hypothetical situation also takes place in a universe where GRRM is a timely writer! Anyways an anime original ending doesn't mean that they have to start the original content in the last 2-3 episodes, they could always plan for it ahead of time like, say, the original FMA anime.

This is not a very good example to illustrate your point.

Also I hope they don't do an original ending, and instead just set themselves up for a season two. I have no idea where they'd stop at, but I'd like them to not try and tidy things up since I feel like the manga isn't anywhere close to nearing completion.

Finishing a series doesn't exclude them revisiting it afterwards as FMA Brotherhood showed us. They can do their anime only ending and then come back and remake it canonically.

I wouldn't use MAL to decide my breakfast. Compare them and make your own selection based on which style you like better. I believe there's a new screenshot comparison site (what is this, the third?) opening at fansub.co as we speak though I don't know if they've added this show yet.

DeadFish just takes other releases and re-encodes them to hardsubbed MP4s for people with portable devices or hardware players. I believe they are using Commie's subs for this show at present.
