A lot of that was just confirmation bias (mixed with sloppy English-as-second-language phrases). I'm sure a lot of posts on my facebook wall would look creepy to a stranger provided that they were convinced I was a terrorist:

"Hey Windjammer, looking forward to that fishing trip next week! Make sure to bring all your gear. Those trout won't know what hit 'em!" :jihad:

Serious note: I do wonder what's up with that kid. It'd be sad if he's just some depressed guy who jumped in a river and now half of the US had him confused with a terrorist.

They didn't even look that similar (giant mole on depressed guy; different noses; different eyebrows; etc)

Yeah. I remember a cop, in a very calm, mellow voice (I think that was his name too?) speak up when people who had worked more than 18 hours saying he was going on 20 hours. It was astonishing.

everything that I should have been able to release as a 25 year old, boston raised kid, in 2001 after crying as I brought water to coworker after coworker who hobbled to 46th street from the trade center to midtown and my office . . . came out tonight as i followed this stream and listened to this police feed.

I never would have thought it would have happened like this. I really am without words right now.

Goddamn right. There were people inconvenienced, falsely taken in (and soon let go) and then the man who will never be able to look at a vending machine the same way again, but I don't think this could've gone any better besides their killings never have taken place. It's sad that 1 cop died, but when they're pursuing two men with automatic weapons and explosives, it could have been a lot worse. I really hope the Boston PD gets some recognition for this because they've more than deserved it.

Publicly broadcast police scanner transmissions worry me sometimes. Obviously in cases like this they're an incredibly valuable tool for first hand reporting when the news media fails so badly, but does their value outweigh the danger they pose to tipping off criminals/accomplices and enabling interference with the mission?

People are rarely mirandized the second they are arrested. It usually happens at the station before they are questioned. The handcuffs and miranda reading is mostly a movie thing. Because this is a dude who likes making half a dozen bombs and placing them in fun places, they used an exception to ask him about threats to the public and only those specific threats, not general questions. The channels open to the public are largely non-critical, there's no real coordination or secret stuff on there, it's all just secondary and lower-priority organisation (cold water, staff changes, blah blah). The serious stuff is all encrypted.

That's why police have encrypted channels that they use frequently.

Justice isn't some mystic entity that just happens, it requires a poo poo-load of work and for people to overcome emotions to hold to an ideal, and maybe we should celebrate the people who work to ensure justice, especially in a week where a bunch of first responders were vaporized in a fertilizer plant explosion.

You. I like you.

Also, for anyone trying to apply their best BEEP BOOP LOGIC to people cheering for emergency/LE workers: a terribly broken system worked like it should, a frightened people were given relief, wronged people will have justice, a worst case scenario ended positively.

If that's not reason to sigh a breath of life, or come together as a community and show thankfulness and, with those positive vibes, cheerfulness, I do not know what is.

This same city regularly burns itself down if a local sports team wins. How would you expect them to react to closure and justice, and the lifting of a terrifying black cloud hanging over it?

And then, of course, there's that crazy human thing where people handle stress, fear, anger, joy, etc. differently because we're not cold logical computers.

The people cheering and crying and drinking and rightfully applauding LE/EMS are handling their emotions in natural human ways, and it's not hurting anyone.

Since he was injured, he probably won't be officially arrested until after he receives medical treatment (though he's in their custody). If he's arrested and they take him to the hospital, it's on the government's dime.

I'm betting the 200,000+ people on in the internet evesdropping on them will probably provide a kick in the pants to a lot of police departments to move to fully encrypted coms of some sort.
