So I just finished Jormungand and despite some issues with the ending I thought it was pretty much awesome from start to finish. Are there any other shows (manga is fine too) that are similar? I hear people throw around Black Lagoon and I actually have the dub of it sitting on my bookshelf but I never ended up watching it, but besides that is there anything else I should look into?

Black Lagoon, no doubt about it, especially since you liked Jormungand. BL has a less interesting premise but superior quality overall. The ova is fantastic too, and better than the show in some ways.

Jormungand was a great concept but had lots of room for improvements.

I saw Jormungand as a weaker Black Lagoon. So if you're looking for that, but even better, seriously go and watch Black Lagoon because it's really, really good.

Edit: The dub is also really good, and I was so happy when Funimation said they managed to get them back.

Maybe you should try the movie instead! Just kidding, don't. Listen to AO's soundtrack though. One of the guys from Supercar did it, it's pretty tight

That's disappointing but unsurprising after that first ep I guess. I do actually plan on watching the movie though since I have at least heard mixed things about it instead of just outright negativity, plus it's only 2 hours instead of 10 to watch the entire thing.

As for an actual recommendation, I am really enjoying this Attack on Titan show, is there anything relatively comparable? I like the whole feeling of dread/doom it has to it and how brutal it is so far without being outright depressing, plus the action is pretty neat.

Firstly, this is exactly what the thread is for: recommendations.
I went through just this a few pages ago. Watch it if you want, but Astral Ocean is terrible. It starts out fantastic and it is a much better looking show than the original ever was, but it just decomposes like the corpse of dying man until there's nothing but Bones and a big mess.

I should also watch the movie since I haven't yet. It can't be any worse than AO.

Subject change: What is Durarara compared to Bacanno? Is it a direct sequel, or is it another shenanigans potpourri like Bacanno but with a different setting and cast? If there's one think that really made me love Bacanno it was the brilliantly written achronological method of storytelling that made every single character and event seem fascinating. I really hope Durarara follows the same design principle.

Shenanigans with different setting and cast. There is a brief cameo of Isaac and Miria, that's it. It's a really fun show, but Baccano! was better.

I figure since the setting is now in a modern city (from what I saw on the wiki) that it doesn't have the same kind of charm that Baccano! did with its old-school conflicts and styles. Does it ever make up for that?

Modern Japan. Mostly, the main problem is that the characters aren't all as fun. Some of them are - I love Celty, Shinra and Shizuo - but the ones who get the most focus, the school kids, aren't as cool.

I rewatched Slayers recently and found myself really enjoying it. So, two questions -

A) How do the other seasons of Slayers pan out? Are there any that should be avoided at all costs?

and

B) Are there any other anime that hit that same animated SNES JRPG/D&D game feel?

Durarara!! is pretty great. Its main problem is that the third arc is kind of weak, which wouldn't be an issue normally except it's the arc that closes out the season. Luckily the two extra episodes that were released later were a lot of fun and serve as a better ending. It's absolutely worth watching if you liked Baccano!.

Almost every Slayers fan will agree that NEXT, the second season, is the best of the bunch. I personally also love TRY (third season), even more so than the original season, but that's not exactly a popular opinion. The thing with TRY is that there are four filler episodes in the middle that are very painful and disrupt the pacing majorly; on every rewatch I've straight out skipped them and enjoyed it a lot more as a result. The new series from a few years ago was Revolution (and Evolution-R?). It was....OK. The problem was that it was almost literally a rehash of the first season of Slayers. I would skip this one. I was not a fan of what little I saw of the OVAs or movies.

As for your second question, how about Record of Lodoss War?

Just to confirm the obvious, have you seen/read Berserk yet? (The "read" part is important, because the show by itself is hella depressing, but only because it turns what should be the 1/3 mark of the story into the ending.)

Record of Lodoss War is so D&D you can practically hear the dice rolling. There's an OVA, then a TV series which focuses on a different cast but follows up on some events. Rune Soldier Louie is a series set in the same world as Lodoss, but much closer to the Slayers style of gag comedy.

I'm about 20 minutes into the E7 movie and I don't know whether to burst out laughing, stare wordlessly in utter confusion, or just give up and stop watching that crap. It's like trying to watch the first 3 episodes of the show, except even cheesier and more terrible.

e: I gave up. It's such a terrible bastardization of the characters and memorable moments from the show into a sloppy mess that there is literally zero redeeming factors about it. I have never hated an adaptation this much before, it's that disgusting. I have no idea why Bones felt the need to take all of the great characters from E7 that we'd come to know and love, burn them, create characters with the same name, personality and look then completely change the premise while still borrowing scenes directly from the original show.

e2: To make this post at all worthwhile, is there any reason to watch Fate/Zero if I'm put off by the premise? I've seen what Urobuchi can do in Madoka Magica so I know the quality of writing is good and the praise I've heard supports it.

Yes actually, the anime is what got me to start liking anime oddly enough. I haven't read the whole thing yet, I read it off and on just because its so drat long I get almost burnt out on it, but I'm a good bit past the anime at this point.

After getting through the first episode, the quality of the show astounded me. Every single aspect of the show is top of the line and the practicality of the fights must have had a lot of thought put into them. This is a really fascinating show, dark and serious as it may be.

I really have to mention the serial killer summoning scene. That had to be the 3 most harrowing seconds of anime I've ever seen.

If you stay here too long, you'll end up frying your brain. Yes, you will. No, you will...not. Yesno, you will won't.
I enjoyed the Eureka Seven movie quite a bit, and I definitely think it is worth watching. I recall the reception here being positive but not nearly as great as the actual series (it just isn't close to that level). It's quite different from the TV series, so if you go with the expectation that it will be more of the same, or if you keep actively worrying about how the characters are supposed to be related to what you already know, you're not really giving it the chance it deserves.

In any case, it's not AO, and fans of the series shouldn't avoid it.

ViggyNash

Having watched the series, there is no way that I can dissociate the characters from their original setting, especially since so much of the movie is borrowed from the show. Hell, there are parts that are direct copies of short segments of the series. If they wanted to create a standalone movie with no relation to the series then they should have created a new cast and reimagined the setting.

However, even on its own the movie is terrible. The dialog is shallow and thoughtless, the story is incompetently told to the point that I could only follow the general idea, and the premise itself is nothing more than generic. The movie was more reminiscent of the first three episodes of E7 than any of the rest of the series, and I would even argue that it was worse than that. I was confused for the first 20 minutes, then I had to push myself to watch the next 20. After that I just could not deal with it. At least Astral Ocean was watchable since there was some measure of quality to the art and animation, but there is no saving grace for the movie from what I saw.

Force yourself through it to the end if you're gonna rage about it, don't quit halfway through and give us a half-baked rant based on only part of the movie. I didn't think the movie was that bad, and I liked the series WAY more than you apparently did based on your posts about it earlier.

It's not the best ever and definitely not as good as the series, but I didn't find it as reprehensible as AO apparently is.

I liked the series and respect it's strengths, but that isn't the kind of story that I usually go for. E7 is still a really good show even if it isn't one of my favorites.

Honestly whether the story of the movie turns out to be good or not doesn't interest me at this point. The production quality of what I saw was so lazy that I just can't respect it the same way I do the series. I see it as Bones trying to milk the E7 label while trying to tell a different story since they don't know where to go with the end of the series. The latter is pretty apparent in light of AO's story. I'm sorry if you think less of me for it but I don't plan to finish the movie. I'd rather spend my time on a show or movie that I would enjoy much more and that I can respect more than the E7 movie.

The Baccano! dub is really incredibly good. If you're going to watch a show about New York gangsters, watch the version that gives them New York accents. Tiger and Bunny also has an excellent dub.

From the few dubbed episodes of Steins;Gate that I saw, that dub is also fantastic. I've heard that Okabe's english VA does a much better job.

I think this is a more recent development. Studios are willing to put more time, money, and effort into having a quality dub with quality VA's, so the dub quality of some shows are now equal to if not better than their original Japanese counterpart.

Well I've only ever seen Cowboy Bebop's dub and frankly it did not impress me. It's entirely possible that I'm just biased because I saw it subbed first but I just can't imagine dubs being able to capture the same emotion/feeling of the original. I certainly wouldn't mind watching some anime without having to read so perhaps I'll try out a dubbed one in the future though.
