Hey, on the bright side that means that she can actually return safely from the last mission and be the only soldier to see the war from start to finish and live to tell the tale.
Just imagine her returning to the barracks to have a drink for each of her fallen comrades and dies from alcohol poisoning develops a drinking problem kicks the criminally incompetent Central Officer out and takes his job.

NA for the most money right away or Africa for the best continent bonus. All the other bonuses are kinda meh to me in comparison.

Opinions will probably vary, but I think that either Africa or Asia are the best choices. The 30% monthly income bonus from Africa is good for obvious reasons (keep in mind it's not going to increase the cash you get from the grey market or from mission rewards). I think Asia is a good choice as well because it really helps you get some of those critical upgrades going in the early-mid game. On top of that, Asia (like Europe) is really easy to get cut off from later because it's comprised of four nations (Africa is three), so having it locked in at the start eases up a little pressure. If your intention is to grab Asia and Africa, and mine often is, then starting in Asia means you have one less nation to secure before you have both continents.

I dislike Africa for my first continent because its bonus is only actually good after a month or two of satellite spamming, whereas the bonus for NA is useful instantly. It's quite risky to have only one Interceptor stationed on a continent, with a bit of bad luck even a large scout can fight off an Interceptor with Avalanche Missiles, and in the first month or two the money difference is so small that, at least in my opinion, you're way better off just investing in something that gives you functionality.

The lion's share of your first month's spending money will come from selling off your first UFO. Either mentally prepare yourself to sell off pretty much everything except weapon fragments and required materials for research, or consider letting the first Small Scout go so you can prey on the Large Scout that returns later to blast your satellite.

I recommend Asia. America and Europe only pay off if you're set on keeping tip-top ships or buying workshops/labs, and if you're still new then you won't be. Africa is a great bonus, but you can get it with the second Satellite Uplink (and it's not useful for the first month) so you're better off elsewhere.

When I first tried Classic Ironman after beating the game on normal, it took me five tries just to survive the opening mission, and I lost my first attempt by failing to manage panic and getting crippled on the Geoscape. But yeah, once you calibrate your tactics for the new difficulty, it's not too painful.

I dash into the fog of the war fairly frequently on C/I. It's not optimal, but it means the missions take up about 2/3 the time since I'm not slow crawling around. Yeah, I take a few more casualties than I have to - but it makes the game a lot more fun.

It's worth noting that North America starts with an extra 110 sigmabucks, which is the biggest first month benefit outside of some very niche builds. Between the production and upkeep costs of two interceptors per continent (which as Coolguye points out, you really need if you want to be safe), it keeps up with the non-Africa bonuses in later months too.

Europe is probably the worst (aside from South America) because while any sensible start has you picking the Engineer reward from the first abductions and immediately building a workshop, you will never ever ever feel the need to build a research lab.

Disagree. Weapon Fragments will always bottleneck you, but the difference between having no labs and building 2 right next to eachother is gigantic, especially if you get it done in month 2. In most plays you want to have a 2x2 section of Workshops as you reach the end game anyway, to cut down as much as possible on costs when building late game equipment - and really, the sooner you get these up, the better, because it decreases the overall costs of building in credits quite a lot. Europe makes that break-even point come MUCH sooner.

But, that said, you won't catch me starting from Europe, either.

In addition, not getting 3 sats by the end of the first month is hard. Grabbing all four is a pain, but three is very doable, netting you both Africa and NA bonuses right off. You can safely lose NA countries then, as well. Besides, the hardest months are the first three, any front-loading of bonuses is a solid effort.

Imma suggest this to Amineri over at nexusmods. He does incredible mod work for this game. Somebody was asking about mods upthread. I should mention the Long War mod, which was designed by johnnylump with programming from amineri. This mod is nuts, rebalancing all the perks, items, difficulty levels, aliens and their abilities, etc.

It's really cool. They are still tweaking it, but it is a quality product.

I've just started replaying XCOM with the Slingshot DLC and when the first Council Mission popped up it gave me the choice of the Slingshot mission or a regular mission. I went with the regular mission since I had heard that the Slingshot missions are ballbusters. Since then it's not given me that option. Have I missed out on these missions now or will they pop up at a later point?

Urgh. I really dislike how the camera and cursor whatever interact with some interiors, specifically that train in the second Slingshot mission. I tried to move Zhang into full cover inside the train and the game decided at the last second I wanted to be on top of the train instead. Zhang immediately died on the enemy phase, foretelling a cascade of bad luck and angry decisions that led to a full wipe. And it was Ironman, too.

I always got a bit of a "staring into the abyss" feel from Dr. Valen so I'm thinking Enemy Within is when she finally goes nuts.

Alternatively, here's hoping that "Enemy Within" can be taken literally, and the enemy is within the base because they've brought back the XCOM classic feature of aliens assaults on XCOM bases.
