I contributed to infesting the YOSPOS current job status thread with ASOIAF nonsense and it's somewhere between severely annoyed and using seven hells of spoiler tags. I am a terrible monster.

Gygaxian posted:Another terrible bit I noticed are the "Reek" chapters. Good lord, they're basically torture porn. It's disgusting. The Gurm seems to revel in these chapters. And speaking of that, I used to like the Boltons as an dark foil to the Starks, but after reading the Reek chapters, and learning about how Roose Bolton apparently has screaming faces for his shoulderplates, I couldn't take the Boltons seriously anymore. I mean, sure, I could understand the flayed man theme, that's what the Boltons do, after all. And other houses have sillier symbols. And I could even understand the "creepy medieval Richard Simmons with leeches" vibe from the Leech Lord. But the "we're obviously evil, even in this setting" bits are ridiculous, with the aforementioned screaming faces shoulderplates and Ramsay being the dumbest serial killer character I've seen in fantasy. I can't treat the Boltons seriously, and Gurm seems to have a voyueristic streak with "Reek". Reek is far and away my favorite part of Dance. I'm sure it's unbearable if you don't like those chapters.

ADWD peaked with Slynt's execution for me. After that, it was 800 pages of being rousted right out of the story by serjeants and the damned alarums. Words are wind. Very boring and awkward wind.

I don't remember disliking most of Feast/Dance (apart from the iron islands and dorne, of course). I just remember being annoyed that nothing happened. But goddamn Storm had like 6 decent scenes that could have been climaxes to an entire book. I realize George kept expanding the story, but did he have a heart attack while writing Storm? It's like he got all of his ideas out at once. Doing my re-read, now I'm at the part where Roose sends Jaime to KL. How is it I didn't recognize he had betrayed Robb by this point? If not for that obvious fact, there's all the mentions of duskendale.

When I was reading all that stuff about Duskendale, I figured Roose was up to something, and would eventually make some sort of power play against Robb. It never occurred to me he was actually working with the other side.

You're just jealous of GRRM's utter command of sexual metaphors. ...also, I would never stop laughing through the entirety of the book if we get a Ramsay POV. I think he's actually got quite some character for someone obviously intended to be incredibly, disgustingly sadistic. Just imagine - pages upon pages of smouldering rage and unresolved daddy issues and distracting himself with fun torture & games, all while being utterly oblivious to the fact that probably all Northmen, ESPECIALLY his allies, want him dead for being too drat evil. Would actually be a kick-rear end prologue or epilogue chapter. GRRM could go against expectations by having such a character meet a reasonable fate: be killed because everybody knows he's a loving psychopath. Because supervillains could only stay alive if they're Littlefinger. Roose kinda foreshadowed something like that when he scolds Ramsay... I can hope, can't I?

The Northern bits are the best bits of Dance, and large parts of it are because they show how loving awesome Stannis is. That book would be terrible without Stan. This series would be actually, let's not gently caress around.

In terms of tier lists, Victarion is obviously the top tier POV character in ADWD (like Metaknight in SSB Brawl). Followed by Cersei, Barristan, Bran and Arya.

Then, suddenly, Balon's dead, Euron is crowned, and then the craziest goddamn viking knight rear end in a top hat starts chopping up people on a goddamn boat. Suddenly, you can imagine just how ridiculously awesome and fearsome the Ironborn are at their best. Victarion's a deranged, bloodthirsty reaper who considers himself honorable even though he beat his own wife to death. He's entertaining as hell. Believe it or not, I think the most deplorable characters of GRRM are actually some of the most entertaining to read. Rock on, you crazy viking. Until you inevitably get betrayed by Euron because you're a dumb gently caress.

I liked Victarion too because it was refreshing reading a POV that was just so decisive and got poo poo done after reading so many other chapters where either a character was having command problems and had to agonize over every decision made or were being held captive by someone else and had no agency of their own.

Besides, Victarion is just too over-the-top to be that offended by. Especially when you consider the much worse misogyny aimed (mostly by the fandom) at Sansa and Catelyn. And I wasn't decrying Manderly in the slightest (words are wind), he was one of the few other shining parts of ADWD after all.
