Why does everyone need to have every one of the things Right Now?

The only reason the Chromecast is flying off the shelves is it's $35 and used to come with a free Netflix promotion.

The only people who really bought it as a consumer were the people who wanted it because it's $35. I'm pretty sure no one outside of people who frequent the Internet regularly (nerds? geeks? Whatever they're called now) knew it even came with a free Netflix subscription.

Since it had that, people bought it and flooded Best Buy's stores just to buy multiple copies of it. It most likely freaked out Netflix who killed the promotion early.

However, since Best Buy still had stock that still had the promotion, nerds ran to buy it anyway and cleaned Best Buy out.

Basically, the price is right and there was a promotion. :v:

Once Google realizes it's okay to have a bit too much stock of something, we'll probably be okay. But that may never happen because they've done it with the Nexus 4 and now the Chromecast.

The price is so low, people were buying it just because it could satisfy an impulse buy and maybe not break the bank in the process. Also free Netflix.

I wonder how much of the general public will buy the Chromecast once BB gets stock without the Netflix promo still attached. Most of the non-techie places I've noticed all say it's not worth buying because the Roku and Apple TV still do more and thus are worth their higher price points.

I honestly have only used my Roku once or twice in the days after I received my Chromecast; it's so much more convenient to just cast everything from my phone/tablet/computer. Also the Roku doesn't do YouTube that well, and the Apple TV is only able to speak to Apple products. I enjoy the fact that when my brother, parents, or friends are over they can all stream poo poo to my TV despite owning a plethora of devices. All that for $35 is kind of ridiculous.

The promotion wasn't ended early. They had a fixed number of codes to give out and they ran out.

What's your source on people stockpiling multiple Chromecasts? You can only redeem the code once so I don't see the point in that.

What's the source on them running out of codes? I didn't read anything about that. Mostly just that it ended early.

As for people stockpiling, there's quite a few people on eBay selling more than one Chromecast. Also there was someone here who redeemed two codes and it worked fine.

I don't run Cyanogenmod, but hopefully this will work its way into something you can install on anything

http://www.androidpolice.com/2013/08/09/koush-demonstrates-streaming-to-chromecast-with-any-media-app-on-cyanogenmod/

quote:

Ever since Jelly Bean, the reasons to switch to a custom ROM (as opposed to a stock, rooted build) have been slowly shrinking. But today ClockworkMod Recovery developer Koushik "Koush" Dutta gave us a reason to be incredibly excited for upcoming builds of CyanogenMod. With a little tweaking of the famous ROM family, he's managed to integrate Chromecast streaming across the system, making any video or audio app compatible.
Koush's demonstration video is convincing. Start an applicable audio or video player, and a "Play on Chromecast" notification will pop into the tray. Tap it, and the file will play on your Chromecast TV dongle, no muss and no fuss. And more importantly, there's no need for developers to update their apps with the Chromecast API. Presumably this addition to the CyanogenMod ROM includes the ability to stream local files and cloud files, as Koush demonstrated previously.
This method seems to work so seamlessly between Android, Chromecast, and any apps that use media APIs, that you have to wonder why Google didn't try to do something similar by baking in some of this functionality into Android 4.3. As usual with CyanogenMod, there's no word on when end users will see this added functionality, but I'd expect it to pop up in CyanogenMod 10.2 builds (Android 4.3) before too long.

At $35, even ignoring the Netflix promo, it is under the decision threshold of "if I forgot this in a hotel, would I care?" I suppose the $40 Roku falls under that heading too, but not an Apple TV.

The Roku would sort of count too, but I don't see it working that way for most consumers. They want features now, not waiting until later. I could see the Roku winning out that battle for non-tech people.

If working for HSN and ShopNBC have taught me anything, people would gladly pay more for features than less for less features (in their eyes anyway).

I do still agree it's cheap enough to impulse buy, but you could also return it and just buy the Roku too.

I'd say it's tough to tell until more units ship.

Because it's very frustrating, in this day an age, for someone to show off a new product, showcase all it's features, and then say "naww, you can't have it yet." Also, google is the master of this.

I'm the same way right now about the Zenbook Infinity that Asus showed off earlier this year. I want it NOW, not Q4. Don't even tell me it exists yet if I can't buy it.

It's also just bad from a marketing perspective. You lose the buzz from your unveiling after they quietly make it back into stores months down the line.

Would you rather know about the product sooner or wait longer until they have a lot of stock? I mean, the only difference between the universe we're in now and the universe where there's plenty of stock is that you don't know about the product for a month or two or three or whatever.

Personally, I'd rather know about the product as soon as possible. Hell, if they would run a real-time blog detailing how the design and manufacture of a product goes from the very inception that would be awesome.

bull3964 posted:

Sure, but that's their problem, not mine. You could make the argument that the device becomes less valuable to have when less people in total have it, which is what you end up with if the marketing falls flat, but...it's a $35 dollar device that out of the box provides a ton of value.

Eh, it's just best not to over-think it. Google made a product that's an impulse buy and I can't impulse buy it. It's as simple as that, frustration.

It's as much about scratching the impulse buy itch is it is getting the product itself.

The Chromecast software isn't much more than a stripped down browser, but there isn't a supported way to make it load arbitrary URLs. So it can't sign on to public wifi networks that require click through agreements unless you clone it's MAC address to another device. Even if you did that, most public networks will also have client isolation, so your phone or other control device would not be able to send any instructions to the Chromecast.

To get Chromecast working in a hotel, you'll probably need your own wireless router or other device that's capable of creating a hotspot and sharing a connection with it.

Welp, I just built a HTPC instead. The Chromecast is a cool little device. It really just turns your TV into a smart-tv-lite.

As long as the app you're using supports casting, it's great.
As long as the video you play in a chrome tab uses a supported codec, it's great.
As soon as you try to venture out past its stated features, it doesn't work.

I mean, I'm able to cast MKVs of my DVD collection on to my tv, but it's less convenient than XBMC, or transcoding it to a PS3 compatible format and just streaming it directly over the network that way. Also I cancelled my netflix account years ago because they were doing that "we'll only send you the lovely ones" shell game with me.

Thankfully a spare motherboard and CPU turned up and I'm able to use that instead.

I had that problem happen with other videos I was trying to cast from within Chrome. So no, not Youtube, but definitely out of sync audio (by several seconds). The only fix I found for my audio issue (without rebooting)was to stop/start the video and then skip back to where I was.
