Just had a :xcom: moment. First council mission of a Classic Ironman game. Campaign isn't going amazing, but it's not gone to poo poo yet either. Civilian is approximately one, maybe two turns of running from the evac zone.

Right on cue, a Thin Man appears, and spits his poison cloud at the civvy and the one soldier I had with him(the rest spread out ready to overwatch the gently caress out of any other thin men). I think to myself "welp gotta do this quick" and... the civilian panics next turn. Thin Man's already dead by this point, so the civ has two life bars left, and should STILL be able to get out of there alive.

Panics again on the next turn. But wait, there's more! The soldier that was *also* poisoned decided to panic, and since there was no-one else nearby to shoot, he shot the civvy. With a shotgun.

:xcom: :shepicide:

Wait wait I thought Thin Man reinforcements only dropped into Overwatch. Depending on the escort mission, you should be relatively able to clear out the Thin Men before triggering the package.

The only time I got an escort killed was the General, what happened was I had him selected to move, and wanted to switch to another unit and the game wasn't registering my clicks (Keyboard what's that?!) so what happened was instead of selecting an avaliable troop, I ran headfirst into Thin Man Overwatch.

Now keep in mind? this was LITERALLY the end of the mission, he was running into the safe zone.

Isolating aliens isn't the problem, it's the disproportionate chance of failure far out-weights the amount of work that goes into creating the "perfect" scenario to capture one single opponent. I'm not saying the chance of failure shouldn't be present, but the degree of failure is completely contrary to how the rest of the game works.

I totally agree with you (so do the long war devs, to some degree, since they increased the max % on stuns in beta 3) with the chance being annoying. Basically, the devs didn't want the opportunity of stuns per mission to be the same as vanilla since you would have so many more missions. You would have swimming pools full of plasma weapons. They wanted the player to have something like 0.3 captures per mission or whatever their magic number is. There might be a better way of implementing that. Class restriction? Perhaps some way to limit the amount of stunned aliens you can recover per mission? Apocalypse required you to bring alien containment along with your transport vehicles if you wanted to bring biological stuff back to your base at all.

Perhaps the % chance is the only feasible way for them to implement it given the game's engine. I don't know. Feel free to chat them up on the beta thread! They tend to take well written posts seriously, it directly impacts their updates.

Good call. I'm reloading save like a motherfucker no so much because I don't want any of my precious shoot-mans to die, but more because I'm sick of every enemy patrol in the game deciding that "now" is the perfect time to aggro in the same room at the same time. I just spent an hour reloading a state over and over just so that I could finish killing one cyberdisk patrol before the second disk AND the muton patrol decided to teleport across the map and join in the fun. I lost the rookie, whom I desperately needed to be a new heavy, but I won the map.

Your experience may vary, but Impossible just isn't fun to me. Enemies get stupid-huge buffs to their chance to hit, and the random patrol bugs make using Ironman mode more or less impossible. I don't even mind that the aliens get a boost to their health, I just hate that they can bullseye me across the map in full cover. It seems like it's doable, especially because reloading saves pretty much means the only way you can gently caress up your game is with poor base management, but it just feels like kind of a slog.

If you're fighting against cyberdiscs, there is absolutely no reason you should ever have rookies in your squad. Go to the officer training school and buy the New Guy upgrade.

I don't see how it would make a material difference, unless 2K lowered the price just by virtue of it being DLC vs. stand alone.

From a technical point of view, there are potentially compelling reasons not to make it DLC on the consoles. The DLC / patch process for UE3 is particularly heinous on the Xbox 360.

So I may be losing something like 4 or 5 countries by month 3 in my first Classic playthrough. I only have 3 more after that before I actually lose right? It's odd because I've been doing fairly well, I've only had to abandon one mission, and my first terror I managed to save 15/18 civs. I don't know what I could have done better other than maybe set up the satellites better?

The key to getting captures in Long War is running a good early economy so you can afford to get multiple Arc Throwers and perhaps Carapace. A soldier in Carapace and Alloy Plating gets +6 HP which is enough to shrug off any non-crit LPR hit with no wounds.

Another thing that really, really helps is smoke grenades. The reason for this is that units standing out of cover but in smoke cannot be flanked and Arc Thrower chance to hit is not affected by smoke. This especially helps soldiers survive retaliation by Sectoids, who cannot crit without flanks and actually helps with Floaters too. Floaters have even worse aim than Sectoids on the ground. On normal difficulty they may have only a 65% shot against a soldier in regular smoke at point blank range. Thin Men remain the most dangerous early capture, but the UFO tech credit is really awesome if you can get it.

The last key is leveling up Engineers to Lt. to get the Repair perk. This is easier to do in LW 2 Beta 3. If you have a Lt. Medic you can have Dense Smoke too. You can get Sectoids and Floaters pretty easily without this though.

And bizarrely, removes one of the coolest aspects of the tactical changes, which was that Covering Fire and Suppression worked together so your gunners could suppress and get a counterattack if the enemies fired OR moved while under suppression. It made gunners generally much more worthwhile, especially since covering fire shots ignore the enemy's cover. drat. I'm not sure I want to take the beta, even if it does slightly make things easier.

Suppression is supposed to give you a free shot if the suppressed target moves. If you're shooting at non-suppressed targets, that's, uh... not supposed to happen. Are you sure you're not firing at the suppressed target?

The Rat

You will find no one to help you here. Beth DuClare has been dissected and placed in cryonic storage.

Suppression always seemed useless as hell to me. Whenever it's used against me, I do one of two things:

A) If an enemy is shooting at me, it means he's in range of my guns as well. The squad shoots him down; the previously suppressed trooper prances daintily out of the kill zone.

B) My suppressed assault trooper momentarily panics to himself, saying "Oh poo poo, I'm suppressed!" Then he comes to his senses and says "Wait a minute, I have lightning reflexes!" and prances daintily out of the kill zone.

Using it against the enemy has seemed pointless as well, since if I want a free shot at an enemy within range, I can just overwatch and get the same effect.

Suppression is better than Overwatch when facing a single unit you don't think you can kill that turn because of the aim penalty. Also, don't forget that heavies can suppress multiple units at a time with the right upgrades so they're very useful for temporarily shutting down a pack of aliens.
