I like the Saiga because getting 2-3 shells from an ammo pickup with the increased ammo capacity skill is great. The lower damage doesn't mean much once you get a kill and turn on Overkill. Also I can change the stock without slapping on a giant, disgusting rail.

Funny, because my build is virtually the same except I'm full Ghost with just enough Tech for the headshot bonus. I'm really curious to see what the trees will look like post-patch. I still haven't ever ran full Tech or Mastermind yet - I hope I'm given enough incentive to finally do so!

That is the real problem. They just couldn't keep their skill-inventing hands still and just threw poo poo together for the trees when there clearly was a design intent behind each one, once upon a time.

Here's a big effort post on what I think they were aiming for, failed and should try to bring back:

Technicians: Techs are your huge gently caress-off firepower people. They're supposed to be the firebase any loud mission revolves around (especially when double-sentry specced). They've got damage buffs, a weapon focus that's awesome at long range all the way down to short and all of their equipment is firepower. They need to do the most damage, at all ranges. That armor and crafting poo poo? What the gently caress is that - it has no place here.

Enforcers: The Tanks. They're supposed to protect everyone by being big and loud. They need to draw aggro (this already works!) and make the police think twice about storming the Tech who's doing the killing. I don't think any Enforcer player would mind the Shotgun range nerfs if they could actually stand in the open for 5 seconds and survive. That would mean Enforcer players have several weapon options - they can choose to do less damage than a Tech, but at the same ranges or go full on equivalent killing power to a Tech but only at very short (shotgun) range.

Masterminds: They make the whole Crew better with group buffs (why doesn't the mastermind have that group-wide armor buff from Tech?) and provide Jokers to help out everyone by relieving some pressure. Oh yeah and they get everyone healed and can shout you back on your feet! How awesome is that?

Ghost: The rear end in a top hat of the group - always exactly where you need them with great speed, minimal aggro draw (this already works!) and the ability to kill shields better than anyone else (does knockdown melee work on specials/bulldozers? if not, it really should to give these guys something special to do when things go loud). Admittedly this one is the least well defined of the classes in terms of clear combat role.
Definitely agree with this, just give ghost the melee buffs from the Enforcer tree and have him act as a cloaker. I'm sure this schematic is applicable to a functional set of trees, shame if we put one together it'd be unlikely to get accepted though :sigh:

Is ecm feedback worth taking the first level of? Kinda torn between it and acing silent killer.

Bocc Kob
Oct 26, 2010
I don't think Feedback is really worth it because you only get two ECMs and they keep adding stuff you can do with it. On the plus side it incapacitates specials too, so if you're about to be raped by dozers and you actually have enough time to sit there and drop one/activate feedback, they stay stunned long enough to kill them/run away. You can usually just shoot or run away from whatever by the time you're done sitting there activating it though.

In my somewhat limited experience with feedback, it only really becomes worth the points if you take it with you often, and you are very proactive with it. It is incredibly useful as a panic button on small maps like rats day 1, where you can shut down the entire house when bulldozer #4 come climbing in the window and you are getting overrun. Similarly, on firestarters day 2 or any bank map, you can use one to shut the cops down and create a lane long enough to get to the van, but only if you place it near where you need to cross. Without the duration boost it is still perfectly useful, you just have to hurry up killing all the helpless cops rather than doing it at your leisure.

Feedback is sort of like mines where you have to be looking for uses all the time and they require you devote a certain amount of your thinking to them. Silent killer is a more general purpose skill, where you just have it and enjoy the benefits without really being aware of it. The damage is nice, and the armor penetration can help out on tans, but you have to sacrifice some overall damage on your guns for that benefit and the penetration bonus isn't going to change your combat effectiveness dramatically.

If you love the hell out of suppressed weapons then definitely go with them. If you want a difficult to use but powerful tool to give yourself a party trick and emergency pause button, go with feedback.

I just don't like the idea of of them making a change where taking the super armor in a heist that has a lot of combat be something you actually have to mull over.

I don't think this is the direction they're taking, is the thing, at least by my definition of "a lot of combat". The point isn't to force you to carefully debate whether or not having more armor is good on Rats 1 or any other heavy combat map that's already an Enforcer playground. The point is to make you think "Hmm, this is an OK gold heist...and it's going to doubly suck if we get the farthest escape van...maybe I should take lighter armor so I don't get pinned down in the street. Heavy plate isn't really necessary inside the bank, generally." I suspect this is going to become a bigger deal if and when they add more mobile heists in the vein of Heat Street.

I also think people are taking this as a specific Enforcer nerf (it's only a Ghostforcer nerf), when in reality ALL armor types are getting changed in some way, as I understand it, in order to make using things other than the suit and the top two tiers actually worth something. IIRC, Goldfarb was mulling over whether or not to give Iron Man armor some extra ammo capacity as well, and was debating with folks about say, the suit giving extra gadget capacity.

Cheeseman posted:

tl;dr I like keeping more things viable except when the situation demands it as the game currently is now, but not a fan of having to fine tune every part of your loadout on every mission. Of course, maybe the latter is what they've been aiming for all this time. In which case I'd just have to adjust accordingly.

I think they've been doing exactly that all along and you haven't picked up on it. :shobon: You do get 18 weapon slots, after all. Plus the free choice of any unlocked gadget or bag.

Edit: Further thoughts - I think some of the disconnect is that people inevitably link Iron Man with "shoot mans combat" when in reality it's the ultimate tank mode armor. You're saying "I am the unmovable anchor of this team, the cops are not going to push me back" when you wear it. People want that defensive strength while also being a free-wheeling Doomguy running at high speed and basically soloing entire assault waves with high damage, high range guns, but I think all of those things combined will never be easily attainable and certainly not within a single skill tree.

Funnily enough, planting your feet, and either intimidating cops to the point where they won't approach or blowing their dumb faces off with a shotgun when they funnel in, are two things the rest of the Enforcer tree supports greatly. Enforcer is meant to be the frontline of the team, but always with a Technician shooting long-range rifles over his shoulder and a Ghost flanking around and picking off mid-range threats. And a Mastermind uh...shooting pistols at whatever's left. The entire design of the Enforcer tree makes it clear that it is a close-range specialist class. So wear Iron Man armor when you want them to come to you, or put on something lighter when you need to go to them.

Yeah I kinda picked up on it, but I usually tend to be a bit of a generalist, so I fall back to a loadout that works 90% of the time, and just switch up a weapon or 2 or something if the situation calls for it. As for the armor idea, I think you're right on that and that kind of deal sits alright with me.

I used to have them but I got so tired of feeling like I NEEDED to bring pistols every single time. Now I just use whatever weapon I feel like and I'm still completing OK combat missions.

Does it really make a huge difference in Over Kill effectiveness? And do assault rifles exist for both slots (like are the tiny little carbines in the secondary slots assault rifles? If I was going to spec for one weapon type it'd need to be something that exists in both slots and I've never felt like my shotguns weren't hitting hard enough.

The secondary automatics are all sub machine-guns except for the stryker (glock 18) which is a pistol. The shotgun is the only weapon that exists as both primary and secondary. Weapon boosting skills aren't really necessary but are very useful and powerful for their cost in points. If you're going up a tree that has them there's really no reason not to take them. Unless you know for a fact you won't be using those weapons. All weapons can be used fine without any skills in those particular types, for example the Mosconi is a beast even without the shotgun stuff in Enforcer. Although it suffers a bit from slow reload.

Here's my build so far, I think without taking any weapon buffs at all. http://www.pd2skills.info/#/profile/sofar-5/ I play with the same 2/3 guys who are strictly Enforcer, Technician, and Ghost. We do overkill and pro overkill just fine. When you have the weapon skills you definitely notice the benefits of them but it's perfectly viable to play without them on the hardest difficulties. Just don't run right up to dozers.
