I usually hear Black complaining about "out of control prosecutors" in America rather than the "prison industry". He is specifically pissed off about America's somewhat better record in prosecuting corporate fraud (as depressing as this is yes, America has a better record on that count than Canada) but I've literally never heard him complain about the conduct of the police or the war on drugs or the militarization of the police or the emphasis on punishment rather than rehabilitation. His complaint about the US criminal justice system is literally just that it convicted him, I'm not sure he has any more principled objection than that.

Indeed, to echo what Helsing said, the American justice system has some huge problems, but none of them are what Black is complaining about.

Has anyone heard of this "Restore our Anthem" group? Saw it on FB. Something about changing "In all thy sons" to "In all of us" in the National anthem. Restoreouranthem.ca is the website. I watched the video but it didn't really convince me that the changes warrant that much merit. But I'm also a man so, I can't say for sure since it's not really about me.

I think the idea behind that movement is that the original lyrics were, "thou dost in us command," instead of "in all our sons' command," or at least that's what I read. I don't think it's a major issue either way, so when in doubt, we should probably aim for more inclusive language. I can't say I really "support" the change, I just don't give a poo poo either way. I'm mildly in favour of the change, only because "we want to make the language gender-neutral" seems like a better argument than "our anthem should never change from its current version, which was the result of a change from the original version."

I'm female and I don't care about the line. I'd personally rather they get rid of the god bit. But I also wouldn't care if they did change it.

With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty, that good ship and true was a bone to be chewed when the "Gales of November" came early.

I don't think I've sung or heard the anthem in a good 13+ years. Don't even remember the lyrics. Where do you even encounter it outside of elementary school assemblies and maybe on some remembrance day thing in high-school? gently caress anthems, gently caress flags, gently caress patriotism. I've maybe heard the tune of the anthem in the distance during some Canada day poo poo but the actual lyrics? Actually 13 years since I've been exposed to them. I just don't buy into national pride. Yeah it's a good country and all, but there isn't anything special about it. There's a lot of work to do and I am not going to enthusiastically praise this country because it is alright relative to most other western nations. Maybe when we begin setting a real example and lead progress in great technology that saves humanity or something, then I might (might) be willing to sing a song. But still probably not because national anthems are lame, regardless.
