There should be a special animation where MEC soldiers lose their poo poo and kill thin men in a horribly graphic way. If only to reinforce the belief that the in-game soldiers hate them. Because everyone does.

I'm fairly certain that literally everyone agrees with this.

I don't know about your currency, but enemy within is showing up for $30 US, discounted to $27 US for preordering on steam

That's half of the price of the main game on release, and $30 was a pretty standard price for an expansion back when full games where $40-$50 US.
It seems pretty reasonably priced to me.

If that's the case you might as well grab the entire shebang off of steam for $40 today and save five bucks. That really sucks for console users.

what? Yikes.
I always assumed the money unit in XCom was either millions or billions of dollars. You guys are completely missing with solider costs though. The actual salary of a Super Elite Special Forces Navy Seal is a very small fraction of the cost. It all goes into the training, as well as the training for the other 19 guys who washed out for every one who passed. That's why there's no monthly cost for soldiers, when you're dealing in units of a million/billion, the 20k or whatever they're getting a month in pay doesn't even register.

No on the multiplayer, but the Enemy Within expansion is coming out soon. It's looking to be loving amazing with lots of new poo poo. As for stuff that's already out, Slingshot was the only one. Enemy Within is basically the result of the bashing it got.

I always thought that in this version of X-COM, interceptors / vehicles are cheap because they're not built by DoD contractors AKA Beltway bandits that charge $200M to fill about $150M in overhead costs and that the soldiers are the people that were too hardcore for even Blackwater / Xe or whatever they're called now and take roughly a $400k / yr cut for their massive insurance costs.

Also, the cost of the barracks there is nothing, so I think we could consider the construction and even maintenance of a lot of things calculated funny.

In short, we could probably just make up this crap as we go along and it'd all be justifiable somehow, it's a goddamn video game.

Well the you lose cutscene makes it pretty clear that the aliens have infiltrated world governments so far that they have the Council under mind control.

trapped in custom title factory, send help
It's also plausible that the X-COM project is one of many initiatives, and although you think it's the best, the Council has a few others that they can move funding toward (which won't work). Like how in Pacific Rim they pull funding for the Jaeger project in order to build a wall which gets torn down immediately. It's not an uncommon trope

I took the game over cutscene as the aliens judging the human experiment a failure if you lose 8 countries. Shen says early on they could conquer us whenever they wanted, so the doom tracker is probably a literal counter the Ethereals have on their mothership.
