The gist I used was that he starts off promising, but then veers off into tired and wrong cliches about what he thinks ACA is. Also that the mandate is what makes the math work: without the mandate, premiums go through the roof and insurance doesn't work for anybody; premiums shouldn't go up if you have a large enough pool of healthy people to spread risk around, and you shouldn't complain about being one of the healthy people unless you're certain you'll never be one of the sick ones (hint: you won't).

Also stats about spending 18% of GDP on healthcare, 50% of bankruptcies due to medical costs, 2/3 of those were insured, yadda yadda yadda...

The thing is board certification is actually a fairly free market idea already. The American Board of Ophthalmology is a non-governmental non-profit organization and the only thing you need to to become certified is pass a written and oral exam. Rand Paul had to complete medical school and residency to become a doctor already so he's not doing anything illegal.

This just raises questions of his competency and ethics.

If he can't become board certified by standard process that raises a big red flag as to his abilities of a doctor, but is otherwise unremarkable as he can still practice medicine. The fact that he created a National Board of Ophthalmology and claims he is certified by them is incredibly scummy and to be honest I'm not sure if there are any legal consequences to doing something like that.

There is something about Obamacare that makes even some reasonable people lose their poo poo. I have no idea why, it might be the the intentional misinformation that's been put out or the generally complicated nature of the program. But even taking the time to explain it to them doesn't help.

Not necessarily. There's a group in ... Florida, I think? ... that didn't like the rules for emergency medicine board certification -- basically, a bunch of non-EM trained doctors who missed out on grandfathering in wants to be able to say they're "board-certified emergency physicians" because it makes them more desirable. Instead of getting the proper training, which would mean doing another three-year residency program, they tried to make their own board and self-certify. It was successfully blocked by the courts. It's a state-by-state thing as far as I'm aware, though, so there's nothing one can do about his effectively fake board certification unless someone or some organization (like the legitimate American Board of Ophthalmology) takes him to court.

It's a little scary if he actually practices. We don't know what his requirements are for continuing medical education above and beyond basic CME required for all physicians in his state, and he could be woefully behind the times.

Yes, there are plenty of white folks who are quite content to game the system. The thing is, we don't sit in huge groups and encourage one another to do it. Black people, on the other hand, tend to do that. See, us white people we tend to feel all guilty about noticing these things. We're usually the ones crying "racism!" and feeling all guilty. The thing is, many black people (particularly black men) will readily admit to this herd mentality phenomenon.

I once worked with a black man who said, "you know why there's so many brothers in prison? You white people always whine about how we're raciall profiled. No! It's because the brothers get together in huge, conspicuous groups to commit a crime. They'll be fifteen brothers out there in front of someone's house trying to steal a car, drawing all kinds of attention to themselves". A black man my husband works with was talking about Freaknik once. He said, "you know, it's sad. You white folks can hit up towns for Spring break or summer vacations, and nothing really happens. Black people get together and somehow they can't resist breaking stuff, robbing people's houses, raping women, and just acting a fool". He said, "we tend to do stupid stuff, because we are always trying to one-up the other brothers". I'm serious, you get a black man alone and he will open up about this kind of stuff. Somehow being white and noticing this makes you a racist. A black person does it and it's a revelation.

There's this in Rand Paul's wikipedia page:

quote:

Paul passed the certifying examination of the American Board of Ophthalmology in 1995, entitling him to describe himself for 10 years as a "board-certified" ophthalmologist. In 1992, the century-old American Board of Ophthalmology, which in 2010 listed 16,000 ophthalmologists on its rolls, had begun requiring physicians to recertify every 10 years; prior to that, no limits had been placed on duration of certification.[22] In 1997, in protest of the American Board of Ophthalmology's decision to grandfather in older ophthalmologists and not require them to periodically recertify in order to maintain their status as board-certified practitioners, Paul, along with 200 other ophthalmologists formed the National Board of Ophthalmology to offer an alternative ophthalmology certification system.[23] The National Board of Ophthalmology was incorporated in 1999, but Paul allowed it to be dissolved in 2000 after failing to file required paperwork with the Kentucky Secretary of State's office for the organization to continue to operate. Paul later recreated the board in September 2005, three months before his original 10-year certification from the American Board of Ophthalmology lapsed.[18] Since then, Paul has been certified by the National Board of Ophthalmology, with himself as the organization's president, his wife as vice-president, and his father-in-law as secretary.[22]

Facebook fuckery for one month, yo.

An old high school friend of mine is on WIC and EBT; she posted up a meme on Facebook about how the food stolen from Walmarts in the EBT downage should be enough to feed those thieves for the rest of their lives, and they should be cut off from assistance forever now!

We had a nice argument about it, me saying that Walmart approved the 'limitless spending' so it's on them, she saying the people were greedy thieves and Walmart had to foot the bill, boohoo! She later snapped, after I pointed out that Walmart approved the spending on the cards, and they have loving posters in their breakroom for employees on how to apply for state aid, that she didn't give a poo poo about Walmart. Back and forth about greed versus need, and I said that most people in that situation would have taken everything they could. You're on limited assistance, Walmart doesn't say to stop, and when they do, yeah people got pissed, but you can't blame them. gently caress, everyone takes extra when they can!

She says no. And:

quote:

I must vehemently and wholeheartedly disagree with your statment however, that anyone would do what these people did. There is still a sense of morality out there, despite recent demonstrations. Those that might try and take advantage for the TRUE NEED of their family, and not greed, will be getting necessities. Enough to skate through. The people seen by the police chief leaving with ten loaded carts are just trying to snatch up whatever they can.

And as a second rebuttal to your statement, not everyone will take whatever they can get. If you'd like a specific example, here's one: Husband and I get WIC for the girls. We are in a more secure position now and, even though we can technically get free stuff for FOUR MORE YEARS, have discussed it and will be discontinuing WIC starting next month. While the free stuff is nice and it'll be tighter without it, we can do it and both refuse to take more than is NEEDED, not WANTED.

So, that's all I have to say on this topic. Quite enough Facebook fuckery for one month.

Note: she doesn't factor in that her mom and her in-laws also are helping with bills, and have been for years. Without that help, without her work relocating her to work from home and not 40+ miles one way every day, she would still be on assistance.

Or who knows, maybe I'm being a bitch and need to open my eyes to how the real world works.

This is making to rounds on the right wing media sites from a Fox News interview, I can't find it on any non-crazy sources. The site already adheres to the federal computer security standards set by the NIST. That hardly makes it hacker-proof, but no one is claiming the site has any specific vulnerabilities that don't exist for any other website.

Also I hate to ad hominem the guy but you can't mention John McAfee without mentioning that he is still wanted in Belize for questioning in a murder at his house, and the bizarre series events that followed.
