So far I've met three kids in FF4, and two are turned to stone and one fell off a loving boat. I guess this is an accurate portrayal of what would happen if you tried to drag kids along to defeat horrifying monsters and such.

I'm sort of following a walkthrough now that I've got the airship and I'm wondering where to go, but it seems like there's a lot of optional stuff. Might just try to beeline through the main story; collecting Phat Loot by farming random encounters doesn't seem fun or in any way important in a single player RPG, unless I'm missing something.

The thing about FF4's random drop Phat Loot is that it's almost entirely either joke or outdated items. Unless you care much about those, don't feel like you're missing anything super-powerful.

In the next dungeon you go to, you can find one of the strongest spells in the game, but it's a rare drop from a rare mob and gently caress that.

FF4's rare drop stuff is horrible bullshit. At best, some rare drops have a ~6% chance to drop, at worst (and it's mostly at worst) it's fractions of a percent. Game's never anywhere near hard enough to require, or even recommend going after any of it. There's some neat stuff with adamant ore later, which is optional and mercifully not rare drop territory. Just enjoy the game.

All of the coliseum DLC is great, Gilgamesh in particular. You have to be into optional super bosses to like it, though.

Depending on how nostalgic you're feeling, the Ultros/Typhon and Gilgamesh might be worth your while... if they weren't obnoxiously difficult to the point of being literally impossible unless you can deal about two million damage every time you stagger.

The Sazh one is all about playing card games in the casino, it's great.

The Lightning one is like a weird 1v1 remix of the battle system where you grind on one fight until you beat it, I didn't really get it tbh.

Snow and all the "Opponent: XX" ones are characters from other games you can fight as extra superbosses. They're all pretty good, Ultros and Gilgamesh are the standouts (both post-game difficulty).

The DLC weapons aren't particularly strong and the DLC costumes don't do anything.

I finished 13. I liked that at the end of the game they did exactly what they were supposed to do by killing Orphan but this actually saved the world because they're heroes and heroes never lose!!!!

I'm gonna muck around with the missions, I only ended up doing about half and I've had a ton of fun with the game so far so I'm gonna keep playing until I get bored of it and move on to 13-2.

Did you notice that thing in the background of the final boss, and know that it's there because a Goddess intervened and allowed the good guys to have a happy ending, while destroying the timeline in the process?

If not, you're dumb, stupid, and were not paying attention to the incredibly well written and intriguing story made completely obvious to you by sifting through the datalog after every cutscene.

It appears that Square-Enix has formed a committee centered ensuring the quality of future Final Fantasy games. Now who are the highly qualified people behind this esteemed committee?

quote:

In an effort to bolster the quality of the Final Fantasy series going forward, Square Enix has deemed it necessary to bring together some of the franchise’s top creators in what they’re calling the “Final Fantasy Committee.”

According to a report by FF-Reunion, the committee will be headed by Yoshinori Kitase, Hajime Tabata, Naoki Yoshida and Motomu Toriyama. Details remain sparse, but their meetings will take place to ensure the quality of the FF series going forward. Long time series character designer and now director of Final Fantasy XV Tetsuya Nomura, however, appears to be separate from this initiative as his priorities lie within another timeline.

For the quick rundown;

Kitase - jack of all trades, has worked on all the FF games since FFV (with the exception of IX, XII and the MMO games) in various roles, mostly as a producer for the last decade. Basically he's worked the gamut of utter poo poo to "actually pretty decent".
Tabata - director on Crisis Core, Before Crisis, Type-0, and co-director on XV.
Yoshida - worked on various Dragon Quest games, and is pretty much the savior of XIV by not making it horrible and into an actually enjoyable game.
Toriyama - Hopefully he's just gonna make the tea, and not let near a typewriter.

No Tetsuya Nomura on the committee. I guess you have to fully direct and ship a Final Fantasy game in order to get on board.

Barudak posted:

Yoshida is the type of guy who is worried about losing customers and will work tirelessly to address their concerns. He doesn't have much of a future in SE's upper management.

In all seriousness, there has been very little in the way of new blood entering the company. Yoshida and SE Osaka have come the closest to taking over the reins of the old guard. Nonetheless, they've lost a lot of promising talent over the years, such as core members of the Dissidia team leaving for GREE Inc..

Toriyama is often decried as the root of the company's problems but Square-Enix management and the politically well-connected Kitase seem to like him and his work. They keep giving him the resources to keep on making the games. However, I don't know what will happen under the new management which is focused on profitability and high growth markets.

All I care about is that when it comes to anything about the story, Toriyama needs to be wrestled away from that pen. Unless he pulls a miraculous 180 in Lightning Returns, I am absolutely convinced that the dude cannot write, and suffering through 3rd Birthday and Front Mission Evolved won't change that any time soon.

It's easy to be cynical about the formation of this committee but I think it's an improvement over their previous attitude. According to Yoshida, the company had become complacent after FF's success and the thinning of their Japanese competitors. They let FFXIV release in its original state because they thought the strength of the brand would overcomes any criticism of its archaic game design. Sometimes, a company's worst enemy is itself as it becomes drunk on past successes and fails to better itself.

A committee dedicated to quality assurance is a huge step forward from this mentality. Nonetheless, there a chance of the committee being a microcosm of the nepotism and stagnancy affecting the entire company. While younger insight would a good addition, I think there are a few more veterans who could help establish a system of checks and balances. I'm curious to what Hiroyuki Itou is up to. He's a very talented, open-minded, and experienced developer. He may have been working on a project that was cancelled by Square-Enix after their financial problems.
