Spacedad posted:I dunno what the voice chat stuff was on about though. Some girl joined found the server with her friend and I don't know if she was a goon. Some people thought she was using voice changing software and some people typed some weird stuff into comments. It was quick. She went along with everything though and seemed to have fun. Better than the other random pubs that joined and said we were all a bunch of assholes (which to be fair, some of us were being). Other than some spergin' out over the RULES I had a lot of fun. Sure, some gimmicks worked better than others and it was unbalanced as all hell, but that's what makes it fun. I think Ice Skating Spies was my favorite event. The screwed up hitboxes being 10 feet front of everyone made that extra fun. Fat Scout was fun too, once everyone realized they could use melee. edit: cuddlenaps posted:No, that's my actual voice. I left before the "VOice chat creepyness" and I don't regret it I was around on cp_gothic when we had an influx of pubbies who didn't seem to comprehend why everyone was running around as melee sniper, including one who went "You guys are assholes!" and then quit.

Spacedad posted:That was me - If you notice I have a 'tradition' of for the past few weeks ending the evening's event by putting up a sentry for a little bit to troll before leaving. I personally just reacted to people cheating by cheating myself, but only on that person. It tended to...actually be really really easy to remove them from play (here's a tip to the market jumper who was hi-lariously preventing hightower from possibly ending: : some of the pyro weapons? Get better the more pyros there are!) I had a really fun time for my first ''real'' go at it. I'm explosion wizard then LORD TERRIFYING after I saw what my Pyro loadout had wrought. A suggestion: when there's asymmetrical gimmicks, like the Engineer/Spy thing, they should trade gimmicks in the second game. Also, towards the goal of games ending, it might be an idea to always let the teams have 1 outside of gimmick player (medic, probably, or engineer for teles) just as a quality of life thing. The only thing I didn't like was that last map, it was incredibly confusing and parts of the roof didn't have geometry. The gimmick was ''melee only, but you can uses nonlethal items'', but when I tried to use the sticky jumper it bounced me into the skybox, then under the level, somehow. We were fortunate someone didn't sentry jump up down there and leave the map unplayable.

We get some really weird maps, yeah - and that engineer gimmick was an attempt at making it feel a bit like you were being attacked by an army of Jasons or Freddy Krugers. I think the 'spies taunt after every kill' was kind of neat that way. Still, it was the 'wildcard' weird gimmick of the night. Also, here's a clue of what the gimmick for the week after next will be: (Yes, it will involve pyroland.)

Today just felt off. A bit of it came that we came up with this gimmick kind of late (there were two other gimmicks we had in mind for tonight) so things felt a bit rushed. I wanted to try something with some of the new maps I found and besides the arena map and last map things worked out okay. I keep the server open to let anyone in and having random assholes shout at the new players right away for not knowing what's up when there's no clear way of knowing exactly (among other voice related things) is awful. Same with just sperging about the RULES. It's Friday night. Let's sit back and relax with some gimmicks. No need to flip out over every little thing.

Yes, please don't sperg out at people during the funhavers events - having fun takes precedent over being 100% adherent to the gimmick rules. This can mean breaking the rules 'when it's funny.' (Presumably for the victim as well.) If someone's clearly being a jerk and using items that shut down people from playing the gimmick though, that is a problem and we'll usually ask them to stop. There are cases where we want people to be 100% on-gimmick and we will let people know this (such as with games where we're trying for some kind of focused type of gameplay, like the jarate rifle SMG snipers) but most of the time if around 80-90% of the people are following the gimmick it's all good. I'm also putting a general-purpose rule in place now for people who break the gimmicks - if you aren't following the gimmick, taunt after every kill you make. Other than that though, this was a great night - the fat scouts turned out to be particularly fun, and definitely something to run again. I wonder if some "Message of the Day" thing could announce the gimmick... or maybe people would just close that. I don't know. But yeah, people were spergin' hard and lotsa fighting going on. I'm glad you guys didn't kick anyone and I know this'll all get sorted out. It's fun and I always am glad I participated. I think some people just can't get over the "competitive" feeling they get when they fire up TF2. I've never played DnD but I imagine a lot of games probably go like this. People arguing about what is "fun" and what RULES to enforce. Either way, thank you GameboyHero for running the server and thank you Spacedad for putting this all together. And thank you to anyone who opened up Pallets of Crates or other random Gift goodies and wasn't a creepo weirdo or hardcore funforcer. I'm sorry I upset Zeus so much. I really didn't mean to.

Well at least we know now what to watch out for in how people are acting to keep things going all right. The evening went fine other than a couple bumps like that. Yeah, basically don't get freaked out if someone's not following the rules. If they are truly problematic, they'll be kicked. Oh, and be polite on voice chat. slardel posted:her mic is fine and its your weird problem for thinking she uses a voice changer I have a voice changer I sometimes use during funhavers, so it isn't so far fetched to get confused about that. I also genuinely confuse people with the 'whiny kid' setting in pubs sometimes and make them think I'm crying because I'm a former COD player that keeps getting owned in tf2. Have you ever dominated someone that will stop at nothing to get revenge? I'm in this awkward situation where I just took out an engie & sentry and everyone knows where I am. So I do what any sensible soldier would and jump at 2 snipers. With the snipers dispatched, I'm at 4 health with no rockets and 3 shotgun shells loaded. That was when this gunboat soldier with a serious grudge spotted my domination sign and jumped me... missed and jumped away. He did this 3 times before blowing himself up. I never even hit him, after missing completely with my shotgun I was too busy reloading and grabbing a healthpack to care. He literally counterjumped himself to death and it was one of the saddest things I've ever seen.

There is no more ear-rending sound than dying as Pyro to a Class+Medic (cue dominated sound effect x2), only to not even a second later kill them both with afterburn damage (cue revenge sound effect x2).

Fingerless Gloves posted:You may have heard many stories of it, but behold - The Valve Defense in all its glory. But really, it's because my patience and attention span aren't long enough to set up a proper sentry, or be bothered to build another one if it explodes. Even if the Valve Engineers who set up a teleporter that leads anywhere but to their spawn turret this week I can count on one hand. But you can't waste time running to that staircase by the last point on Gorge, it would take 5 more seconds to run there! Also, was your team's single Demoman traditional or knighting it up?

Traditional I think, they'd not long joined at that point. Also of note were the sheer amount of free equipment, literally everyone else on my team had a gibus/merasmus + goggle combo. It was like a parody of a valve server.

Collateral Damage posted:Old pet peeve: Engineers who build their teleporter exit facing a wall. I played a game of barnblitz where I was defense and one of the blu team engis put up a tele exit inside the kind of left-hand-side cabin thing at the last point, behind all the chickenwire. It was facing the wall and I was playing backburner pyro. Normally I take the smart way out and just smash the tele, but here I managed to rack up 11 crit kills, with some people coming through multiple times. It ended when the engi figured it out and picked up the entrance.
