Sunday was a fairly low key session, all things considered. It didn't help that I was exhausted. That being said, playing early war RAF against the Germans proved to be pretty challenging. I'll want to keep that campaign.

If anyone has more suggestions or wants to take a crack at hosting something they've found or even just have me fire up a campaign where a particular plane will fit in (try to keep things just a touch historical, not because of MY IMMERSION but because giving us something wildly advanced for the campaign makes things too easy), let me know.

I am thinking that the French campaign was too small, and the French are at such a huge disadvantage, because E1s are baller. We had to get lend lease p39s just to compete and p39s in 40-41 are OP as poo poo. What would a Wake Island game look like if we played as the Japs?

Mid-war eastern front could be really fun. 109 G-2 versus La-5 F or FN is a pretty even matchup with lots of varied altitude engagement. You could even justify throwing some TB-3's in for the hell of it.

Another scenario I really like is the Sino-Japanese conflict. I-153 and I-16 versus A6M2-21 and Ki-43. Sounds lopsided, but once you realize the I-153 can out-turn a barn swallow it becomes a whole new ballgame. Also lol green laser MG's are fantastic for starting Japanese bonfires.

You're looking at air starts towards the edge of the map with a long flight time to Wake Island, mostly.

I've put the Thursday night 7:30 CDT session up on the Steam group.

For Sunday, I have a very open day. I have essentially the entire afternoon free, from 2:30 to 7:30 CDT. I don't think I'll want to dedicate that entire time to sims so I want people to chime in for what 2 hour slot works best for them.

My solution is to leave it to you to vote. Here's my lovely voting method:

Go to this spreadsheet .

Put your username in on the left and then for each half hour time slot put in a 1 if you're available during that timeslot or a 0 if you aren't.

At the end of Thursday's session, I'll look at the spreadsheet and pick at 2 hour window where the most people have said they're available.

If anyone wants to take on hosting before or after, feel free. Hell, I might show up before or after the time slot to either play other spergtastic games like ARMA or just do an extended IL-2 session myself.

If someone has a method of voting that's easier to do, let me know. The way I see it though is I can easily do a pattern by summing up each half hour slot and then bar graphing it.

Thanks for hosting Joven. Internet airplanes are a good break from my thesis.

Out of curiosity, can the DCG create missions tasked to bomb like, factories (is that even something IL-2 can do?). It might be fun to do some bomber escort missions. Just throwing out an idea.

Yes, sorta. The thing is, it's hard to plan to intercept the friendly flight without assigned flight paths, something you don't get in dogfight/MDS mode. The fact that bomber targets are chosen automatically means we have no sure way of knowing where they're going.

It works better in true coop mode but then we can't JIJO or respawn.

IL-2 Battle of Stalingrad preorders are closing on November 11th, and the alpha (for premium preorders only) will begin soon after. A preorder of either Standard or Premium will save you $10 compared to buying the same edition after release (Spring 2014), or $5 compared to buying during alpha. If you buy Premium during alpha (and presumably Standard during beta) you'll still get immediate early access, but you won't get the 'founder' title ingame or the 20mm gunpods for the Bf109 F-4 (unless they change their minds and make those generally available).

Aside: I'm not filling in anything on the Sunday sheet because literally any time is good for me.

The full mission editor is great for practicing combat. You can put yourself and your target wherever you want. There are tutorials on youtube if you've never used it. It's not a very complicated program. Probably be faster than searching for premade training missions.

Edit: I made a level bombing practice mission if anyone wants to try it. It's technically a dogfight mission, so it goes in your NET/DOGFIGHT folder and you can respawn.

Try the ATMG (Attack Mission Generator) on M4T. You can generate bombing missions with targets and approaches of your choice (bridges, factories, ships, level bombing, skip bombing, dive bombing, etc). It's pretty neat.

I've played around with this very briefly in the Pe-8, which is what we were flying in the other night. Something I'm not able to do yet is figure out my true airspeed in these aircraft. There are a couple youtube videos by a guy that uses an add-on program to do it. I may give it a try. Also without knowing the terrain elevation of the target, there's no way to know if the altitude is set correctly. I guess this isn't much of an exact science is it, even historically?

Anyway, ya, never run a Leningrad campaign because the city causes everyone's games to crash. Other than that, Russian planes are proving to be just as fun as I remembered and we mopped the floor against both air and ground targets. That being said, even when there's over half a dozen of us playing, maybe we should all stick together in an AA role the first few sorties or we'll have a rough start like last time.

IAS->TAS conversion is just a quick formula based on static air pressure (i.e. altitude) and temperature (can be guessed from altitude), and elevation comes from elevation maps. Weather conditions can affect the former in multiple ways - wind, reference pressure for the altimeter, etc. The instruments in no-cockpit view display TAS if you're lazy.

I don't know how fast this will get to Steam but if it doesn't I'm not sure if we should download it. I'd rather keep everyone on the straight Steam version unless there's a big reason to upgrade by hand and I don't think this is that reason.

I should be flying with goons today after I get home from work.

Also, I bit the bullet and downloaded the Bombsight Table 2 add on for IL2 after seeing it used in a couple of tutorial videos for level bombing. It seems to do the trick. Definitely follow the video's example of directly reading IAS from the dial in the cockpit instead of the overlayed speed tape, since it's more accurate. I've been hitting factories with pinpoint accuracy from 10,000ft or so with both the OPB-1 and Norden bombsights.

I can't get it to run over the maximized IL2 window like the following videos show, but I have two monitors so I just have it visible on my secondary screen and it works fine.

Another thing you can do with the norden is if you are lazy and have the sight locked on the target and it drifts you can adjust the speed and altitude so it stable for a more precise bombing run if I am making any sense.

The Ferret King

Yeah for the Norden I use the calculator to get it ballparked then make small corrections to the bombsight speed.

For the OPB-1 I just try to make sure I'm as specific as possible with the numbers and re-check everything just prior to reaching the target. It's a lot more workload.

Yesterdays session had a few less people than previous sessions but was still pretty awesome. Next time I'll make sure that the right time gets put on the IRC channel topics.

We've stuck with the Russian scinerio pretty long. The 109s are good at killing our poo poo when we let them outnumber us but even in IL-2s we're managing to not get slaughtered if we work together to keep each other covered.

Some of this level bombing stuff might come in to play, soon. We're about to push out and start capturing airfields and move on to their staging area. A few carpet bombing sorties might speed things up a little.

I think it's a matter of expectation. I generally don't start a Cessna flight thinking I'm going to encounter a flight of bombers.

That said I hope we get some videos of it to see how the flight model performs. This could be a reaction to the problems with BoB, trying to nail down the flight engine before anything else.

What makes you think the Germans are bailing out of Kiev (I'm not saying you're wrong, I just didn't know the simulation went that deep). Are they using cargo planes or something, and can we shoot them the gently caress down to benefit our mission?

Also, is there a way to put a bit more pressure on us for future DCGs? It seems the AI ground attack sucks and isn't really putting much pressure on us; we're completing every objective and then some pretty handily. I think we're pretty much square for air combat (we're not winning by that much), but we are just really good at ground attack and I don't think the AI has so much as managed to put a column in our territory, or successfully take out any of our columns.

I'd say part of this is because we can respawn but the AI fields a whole fuckload more planes than we do.
