It is a roguelike game heavily based on the dungeon gameplay of Zelda 1, but with over 200 items that can wildly change your strategies and several different characters to play as. The aesthetics are a distinct mashup of hell-and-brimstone biblical references, heavy gore, and internet and potty humor that ends up very much love-it-or-hate-it. It has replay value up the wazoo - thirteen different endings, with the final 'true' ending only coming after a boss rush that can be pretty rough.

I'd ask in the MMO subforum but there doesn't appear to be a relevant thread. Does anyone know of any MMOs with solid RP servers, either officially sanctioned or private? I don't want the kind of ridiculous RP like you might find in a WoW RP server -- I used to play on UO RP-enforced shards a few years ago but the good ones were few and far between. Something more like (tabletop) Dungeons & Dragons and less like Second Life sex fantasy fulfilment.

Because DOTA2 is the definition of very tough difficulty curve/huge variety.

What's a fun game with a focus on 1v1s that also has good automated matchmaking like StarCraft II? It doesn't even have to be an RTS, but I can't think of anything besides maybe a fighting game like Street Fighter and I'm not sure how popular those are on the PC. Basically I just want to [press button] --> [play game] without having to mess around with lobbies, annoying MOBA teammates, or having to wait an hour to play a game. Can you dudes think of anything or should I just buy Heart of the Swarm?

You can basically set your status to "looking to play" and will be matched up with someone within seconds pretty much.

Looking for a PC game that plays like The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King which features large scale battles, action going on all around the character & in the background, 3rd person camera, & a combo move system with powered up specials. Here's a good video of the game.

The best part of Frozen Synapse is how little commitment you need to play the MP. It uses a play-by-mail style system where each turn is taken on the player's own leisure. As a result you can find yourself playing 10 games at once and just taking turns when they become available.

Personally I would go with 2013 or 2012 since the decks were a tad bit more interesting (excluding the goblin, and elf decks).

I like games where you're given total trash recruits that you can then build up into awesome soldiers/monsters/whatever. I like to have a lot of variety in how I can develop them, with different skills, abilities, gear, etc. Final Fantasy Tactics did a great job of this, and the Disgaea series takes it even further, though the games don't have to be tRPGs. X-COM was decent for this, but there wasn't as much variability in how you can develop the characters as I want, and the most important element is "starting from scratch", so that's missing from X-COM as well. I'd prefer recruits who were a bit more of a blank slate/pathetic. Graphics aren't the most important aspect, but I'm not really interested in any text-only/ancient-looking PC games. For instance, I played Battle for Wesnoth for a while, and though it wasn't that ugly, it did make it hard for me to really get into it. I got PC, 3DS, and some older platforms. Any suggestions?

The only thing you might not like is that FE characters usually aren't blank slates at the start, both mechanically and story-wise. Also I think Wesnoth has gotten better-looking over the years so maybe look at that again? As for me, I got grifted by a "buy 2, get 1 free" deal at Gamestop yesterday so now I have Kirby Superstar Ultra, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, and Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia in my backlog. Which should I play first?

If you like Adventure games though, Sanitarium is pretty cool. I would recommend that.

There's also The Longest Journey and its sequel Dreamfall, with the third game coming out next year. I'd recommend the Gabriel Knight series from GOG too. I'm not totally sure but definitely check out Gone Home if you can run it, that game is great. Also if by any chance if you haven't played Telltale's Walking Dead put it at the top of your list. Bastion is also a really nicely written action game too.

It gets a shitload better in the mid- and late-game, but the early game is a slog.

The fact that I kept missing a completely stationary plant enemy 75% of the time killed any desire for me to bother with 2. I got a little farther in 1, but I really hate the combat for both games, its aged horribly. Give me 3 and New Vegas any day.

NeilPerry posted:How well has Fallout 2 aged? I want to play it but I don't want to drudge through too many grindy bits. It all depends. Some things (esp. combat) are a chore by modern standards, and the opening level (Temple of Trials) is still infamously bad almost 15 years on. On the other hand, it has IMO the best quest system ever made in an RPG - every major quest has multiple solutions, and the game varies hugely based on your character build. It's not like F3/New Vegas where you can be a superman at everything. If you want high stats or skills in one area, you HAVE to sacrifice in others, and that will dictate how you can approach problems. If you have a low tolerance for drudgery, I can't really recommend it though. But if you're patient, the payoff is high.
