The past two games I bought, beat, and then played a LOT more were Dark Souls and Rogue Legacy. What else is in that vein? Preferably on Steam?

Have you played The Binding of Isaac? It is a roguelike game heavily based on the dungeon gameplay of Zelda 1, but with over 200 items that can wildly change your strategies and several different characters to play as. The aesthetics are a distinct mashup of hell-and-brimstone biblical references, heavy gore, and internet and potty humor that ends up very much love-it-or-hate-it. It has replay value up the wazoo - thirteen different endings, with the final 'true' ending only coming after a boss rush that can be pretty rough.

I'd ask in the MMO subforum but there doesn't appear to be a relevant thread.
Does anyone know of any MMOs with solid RP servers, either officially sanctioned or private? I don't want the kind of ridiculous RP like you might find in a WoW RP server -- I used to play on UO RP-enforced shards a few years ago but the good ones were few and far between. Something more like (tabletop) Dungeons & Dragons and less like Second Life sex fantasy fulfilment.

It's gonna be old, but I understand that Neverwinter Nights (maybe NWN 2?) has a number of well-run RP servers. That's straight up DnD for you.

Does multiplayer count? Because DOTA2 is the definition of very tough difficulty curve/huge variety.

What's a fun game with a focus on 1v1s that also has good automated matchmaking like StarCraft II? It doesn't even have to be an RTS, but I can't think of anything besides maybe a fighting game like Street Fighter and I'm not sure how popular those are on the PC.

Basically I just want to [press button] --> [play game] without having to mess around with lobbies, annoying MOBA teammates, or having to wait an hour to play a game. Can you dudes think of anything or should I just buy Heart of the Swarm?

Frozen Synapse kind of does that. You can basically set your status to "looking to play" and will be matched up with someone within seconds pretty much.

The best part of Frozen Synapse is how little commitment you need to play the MP. It uses a play-by-mail style system where each turn is taken on the player's own leisure. As a result you can find yourself playing 10 games at once and just taking turns when they become available.

The Duels of the Planeswalkers games are probably the best for singleplayer content. Just be warned the AI is of course not as smart as a player.

Also be warned that if you are just looking for single player than the latest game is a bit boring as far as the base decks are concerned. Personally I would go with 2013 or 2012 since the decks were a tad bit more interesting (excluding the goblin, and elf decks).

I like games where you're given total trash recruits that you can then build up into awesome soldiers/monsters/whatever. I like to have a lot of variety in how I can develop them, with different skills, abilities, gear, etc. Final Fantasy Tactics did a great job of this, and the Disgaea series takes it even further, though the games don't have to be tRPGs. X-COM was decent for this, but there wasn't as much variability in how you can develop the characters as I want, and the most important element is "starting from scratch", so that's missing from X-COM as well. I'd prefer recruits who were a bit more of a blank slate/pathetic.

Graphics aren't the most important aspect, but I'm not really interested in any text-only/ancient-looking PC games. For instance, I played Battle for Wesnoth for a while, and though it wasn't that ugly, it did make it hard for me to really get into it.

The Fire Emblem series is pretty well-known for this, and I've heard that the 3DS Fire Emblem is arguably the best in the series and has a lot of customization. The only thing you might not like is that FE characters usually aren't blank slates at the start, both mechanically and story-wise. Also I think Wesnoth has gotten better-looking over the years so maybe look at that again?

As for me, I got grifted by a "buy 2, get 1 free" deal at Gamestop yesterday so now I have Kirby Superstar Ultra, Mario & Luigi: Bowser's Inside Story, and Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia in my backlog. Which should I play first?

Do you like complex, finicky mods and gunporn? Jagged Alliance 2 + the v1.13 fanpatch might be right up your alley. Want to turn a squad of misfits, losers, and psychopaths into heroic OORAH super death machines? You can do that.

I got Knock Knock, played it for a bit, and I really don't understand the game. I did a lot of walking around a house turning on lights and opening doors, then I walked through a forest for what seemed forever. I did this for three or four days of game time, just opening doors and turning on lights to end with walking through the forest. Maybe there's more, I don't know.

If you like Adventure games though, Sanitarium is pretty cool. I would recommend that.

Gunpoint is $8 on Steam right now and has some witty dialogue, in addition to being a good lightweight stealth game. Fallout 2 is also on sale for $5, for something more longterm.

I'd also recommend Kentucky Route Zero and Papers, Please for good storytelling. Oh, and The Stanley Parable.

I'll second everything Bobby said except that only get Papers Please if you don't mind tedium.

As for adventure games aside from KRZ I'd recommend the games developed and published by WadjetEye Games, namely the Blackwell series, Gemini Rue, Resonance, and Primordia. There's also The Longest Journey and its sequel Dreamfall, with the third game coming out next year. I'd recommend the Gabriel Knight series from GOG too. I'm not totally sure but definitely check out Gone Home if you can run it, that game is great. Also if by any chance if you haven't played Telltale's Walking Dead put it at the top of your list.

Bastion is also a really nicely written action game too.

It opens with a grind, and slowly gets better. If you don't know what you're doing, the slow boring part of the game can last a few hours. It hasn't aged too well.

I say this as a huge F2 fan. It gets a shitload better in the mid- and late-game, but the early game is a slog.

Yeah, the early game does tend to drag if you're playing it by the book or just new to it in general. It's a hurdle, but if you can stick it out, it's smoother sailing for the remainder of the game.

Although it's also a bit of a crapshoot whether someone will actually enjoy the game's combat. Luckily there's a shload of ways to solve quests non-violently.

It all depends. Some things (esp. combat) are a chore by modern standards, and the opening level (Temple of Trials) is still infamously bad almost 15 years on.

On the other hand, it has IMO the best quest system ever made in an RPG - every major quest has multiple solutions, and the game varies hugely based on your character build. It's not like F3/New Vegas where you can be a superman at everything. If you want high stats or skills in one area, you HAVE to sacrifice in others, and that will dictate how you can approach problems.

If you have a low tolerance for drudgery, I can't really recommend it though. But if you're patient, the payoff is high.
