The great thing about the old text parser games is that once you know what you're doing you can run through them in 60 minutes tops. The VGA games artificially pad out simply because of the interface but still, 80s Sierra games were built for replay.

I found my old copy of Monkey Island 3 the other day. Holy poo poo. Guybrush walks so slow in it. The game would take half as long if he would hurry up a little bit.

^^^ He kind of has the same speed as the previous games but the locations are larger. The town is one of my favorite adventure game backdrops but navigating it is sooo frustrating as Guybrush saunters around. e: Holy poo poo, the fat whte kid was Gary Coleman??? kirbysuperstar posted:You mean built for selling hintbooks, right? I won't deny that but these are basically 60 minute long games padded out five times as long because there are so many ways to screw yourself. But taking notes is really helpful. I used to have notes about death actions and important items for Sierra and Infocom games. At my height of nerdiness I could beat Zork in 10 minutes. al-azad fucked around with this message at 01:55 on Nov 10, 2013 |

Sword of the Stars: The Pit hates my guts and I love it, now I see the appeal in rouge-likes, though I'd love to see a Diablo style game in the SOS universe, might check out the 4X strategy game next. Also, is it just me, or does the Morrigi Striker sound an awful lot like Tali from Mass Effect?

It's not without it's flaws, but at least SOTS1 while being fully functional (aside from Multiplayer, though some have worked out how to force it), is game I could play and grasp 90% of without looking at instructions or a wiki. Point Defense tech is branched off from VRF (ballistics shoot faster), enjoy when you fail your 90% chance to get Point Defense. EDIT: vvv well, yes. But they also said they "might check out the 4X strategy game next". Which is not the same game as The Pit. Sword of the Stars 2 is garbage that was beyond broken on release and you should probably feel bad for giving Kerberos your money (even if it was to buy a not-SotS2 game) because it was so bad. Sword of the Stars 1 was pretty good though.

I played that for a bit on a moderate difficulty level and it was fine except for the fact that I could not find enough food to keep body and soul together. Either I was missing something (mechanically, I was very thorough in my exploration), the RNG was hating on me that day, or that game really does not give two fucks.

Even on easy I die around level 15 due to either running out of food or I get machinegunned to death by security bots. The game simply hates your guts and wants to see you fail, that's just the nature of rogue-likes.

The game simply hates your guts and wants to see you fail, that's just the nature of rogue-likes. Frankly, I don't care. Having the reason for your demise essentially be "RNG didn't give yu enough food" is poor game design. I've played some tough roguelikes before that I had some fun with but don't recall any off the top of my head with food mechanics, though I'm certain that there are some. Having your game end for no better reason than "the RNG didn't feel like making food apppear" is just bad design as far as I am concerned. If that means that this isn't a good genre for me then so be it, but I'm not going to let the game slide in this regard just because "that's a roguelike" Sir, You Are Being Hunted has a food mechanic, but that's not a roguelike since there are reloads and save points. That game still frustrates the piss out of me as is.

Balancing a hunger mechanic can be tricky, though it seems to me it probably isn't the most impossible thing to do. If you're correctly estimating how long a player should be on a given level, then seeding each level with enough food with maybe a margin for error, it should be ok. The idea generally seems to be to use it to keep the player moving forward. How does The Pit appear to use hunger? Is it just there to check a box or add complication, or does it serve a function? Do you just not like hunger, or do you think The Pit is just not balancing it correctly? I don't like it when I starve to death either, it feels like more of a whimper than a bang, but like most roguelike stuff, it's usually something I could have prevented.

The original Rogue had a food mechanic, and I've had my character die from starvation several times because the game's RNG refuses to give food.

Don't complain about food in roguelikes until you play IVAN. You will know true desperation when you pray for a morsel and your god turns your arms into bananas.

I loved Shadow Man when it came out. I loved the original Turok also but always thought it was lame that they kept putting out worse and worse Turok games while Shadow Man got that low budget PS2 sequel and nothing else.

quote:SoTS: The Pit If ya'll have problems with food, it's likely that you neglected to develop your Foraging skill. This skill influences how many items a loot source can yield, and what kind of quality they are. It's kinda important to keep that in mind, as food containers aren't that plentiful to begin with. So you want to make the most out of each chance the game gives you! Oh, and you also should look up some of the crafting recepies for food on the Wiki. The game wants you to get those by playing a metric gently caress-ton, but you'll have a much better time when you just look them up. Of course this is no guarantee for success. I had a run where a marine with power armor and a shiny plasma cannon starved pitifully on the last set of floors. In general, your success in this game is tied to the RNG really hard. To the point where it doesn't matter how good you play and how many tricks you know. If the RNG decides to not give you a good gun and armor before floor 15, your run is most likely doomed. And yeah, food or other items work the same way. If the RNG hates you, then you can't do nothing about it. You can only try to make the best out of each loot source, with proper management of your loot related skills. This takes a bit of experience with the game though, and the same can be said about the right management of your resources. I played this game a lot, and could sperg about it for hours

Today's releases: Sang-Froid and an updated version of Wasteland. In other news, Shadowrun Returns is finally preparing for a GOG release! Previously, the license-holders at Microsoft prevented a DRM-free release outside of the Kickstarter rewards, but a new agreement has allowed for a fully-supported DRM-free version with expansions, the editor etc. Good stuff!

I hope that they are kind and do a catch-up sale at the end.
