It's a shame that Square is too lazy to touch up the low res backgrounds, because they look real awful at the PS1s native resolution. The artwork itself looks pretty good.

I already managed to get the old soundfont mod (samuel sleight's ff8 dls) that makes the midi sound almost the same as the PS1 version to work.
Since the original download is offline here's an easy to use version:
http://www.mediafire.com/download/dnfuhoxnbao3991/dmusic.rar
Just rename the dmusic folder (to keep as a backup) and put the one in the RAR in it's place.

I really hope either Square or fans release a patch to put the original music in, because while I couldn't give two fucks about (any game's) story, I really do enjoy FF8's battle system, visuals, and soundtrack. A touch-up of the prerendered backgrounds would be incredible, but that's probably asking a bit much.

FFVIII has some really good tracks in it even if The Oath is ruined almost entirely by its bridge. God I hate that bridge.

I think the action themes are a real strong point in FFVIII's music, the more ambient ones, not so much.
The Oath just sounds like a bad prototype for the play's music in IX.

Man With the Machine Gun is a fantastic track and I will brook no argument.

Somebody at SE had to know that music was the main draw because there is that completely incomprehensible set up a stage show and pick the instruments then look at a porno sequence.

I'll admit that I'm a fan of Love Grows. Although I do agree that VIII's strength was in the "bigger" pieces. Like NORG's theme. I'll never get why NORG of all people has this kind of villain tune but gently caress, it's one reason why I think NORG is such a memorable part of VIII. So I guess I can't fault their decision to give it to him.

As for replacing the music, I used a mod called Roses and Wine. (this is a demo video with a link to the mod but the forum is down at the moment. It should be back soon)

It's been forever since I played this, is it actually possible to do the times trigger press with anyone besides Squall? I was 17 or so the last time I played this so I have no idea.

It's a function of the gunblade, so no, unless Seifer can do it but that hardly matters.

Only Squall and Seifer, because they're the only two that use gunblades. The button trigger is just that: actually firing the gun part rather than just slashing.

Although, really, the fact Cid trusted this guy mens Cid is at least responsible for a lot of this poo poo due to pure, unadulterated idiocy.

But yeah, NRRG always stands out to me simply due to the WTF nature of his character. He's a one scene wonder and a distraction from the "main plot" of this terrible game. I welcomed that.

I'm still amazed that video game companies did, or still do this. :psyduck:
I know it was down to either space reasons, or simply not thinking they'll ever need to the data again, but still...

VIII has some of the best individual ideas that would make for decent scenarios (flying mercenary schools, time-travelling witch who wants to compress time into a singularity, some soldiers who are trying to take down an evil despot sorceress), and turns it into an utter disappointing mismash, with a large dollop of "This is the most Forced Romance since before Star Wars Attack of the Clones".

Because the rest of the world doesn't have Espers! Even if they did pick up on it, how do they plan to power it? FF6 did explain it! It's the central premise of the plot. "The Empire has Espers, nobody else does."

Terra and the soldiers are sent to Narshe because Narshe found an Esper frozen crystal.
Locke goes after Terra because she can use magic and communicate with Espers.
Banon's entire plot is to get Terra to talk to the Espers so they can also have Esper power.

You are constantly ignoring this one, central, basic premise of the plot: The Empire has Espers and nobody else does. The entire game is a struggle over getting access to magical power. This isn't ignored by the game. The protagonist group's central premise is that they are seeking a way to match the Empire's power. They literally have the Espers locked up in a facility and are draining magic from them. Nobody else in the world has access to Espers to do that even if they were willing to.

Let's not forget that during all those years of draining the Espers they are keeping them alive, barely, and never find out that dead Esper = Magicite = far more effective method of gaining magic powers until they see it happen during your infiltration.

FF6 ended in a pretty solid "this poo poo's over :dealwithit: kind of way too. The strongest empire at that point is Figaro and Edgar/Sabin going evil would be a biggest pile of poo poo than FF4:TAY's insanity.

Basically no Japanese developer outside of Falcom and maybe From know what source management or archiving are. For example, unless Devil Summoner 1 is totally remade, we'll never see it in English because the source code is just gone. The PSP port was a Saturn emulator of all things.

I don't think SE wants to be reminded of Spirits Within in any shape or form. It nearly bankrupted Square, Enix very nearly cancelled their merger, and it unleashed something far far worse onto the world...

It was probably more due to the fact that FF1 and 2 were remade for the Wonderswan, and then ported to GBA, reusing the art assets. Same for IV, V and VI - SNES to PS1 to GBA reusing the same assets. They probably figured if they were going to remake 3, they might as well do it 3d, maybe? Test the waters for IVDS? I'm just speculating here.

Get the cast of FFVIII to do it as their Senior Year Garden Show play. Make the whole game about junctioning the right magic to get characters into their roles and quests are about recruiting actors or making them confident enough to play their part.

I know, thats why I want her to show up. Although given how SE works despite how much data they took in advanced to make sure they wouldn't have to re-render her in the future for years it'll turn out she's basically a low poly NPC now.
