Two of the early main quests available allow you to find Portcrystals. One's in the Shadow Fort (select "Rout a monster infestation" while talking to the dude in front of the castle), the other is in the Dragonforged's cave (select "Decipher a text"). You'll find a fourth Portcrystal in a later main quest that takes you to that tower you can see way off in the distance that your Pawns comment on sometimes, and a fifth by completing an optional quest that takes you back to Witchwood.

Takes you BACK to Witchwood? I must have missed something because I never had to go there the whole game, found it by accident while filling in my map before going to fight the dragon. There was a quest to get the witch to make beer or something but it didn't give a map marker, how are you supposed to find the place initially?

By doing the quest to find Quina that you get after killing the Hydra.

Yeah, Witchwood is strictly optional but like a lot of the optional quests that aren't signboard quests it has ties to the main plotline (it also has a super cool optional boss-type enemy you can fight if you complete the quests there). If you ever replay the game, make sure you don't skip the related quests.

After you fight the hydra in the encampment someone runs up to you and is like "hey have you seen Quina???" (it always happens, you can't miss it) and at that point you're supposed to go look for her in your hometown. If you do you'll find out she went to the Witchwood. If you ignore her and just continue to Gran Soren and then down to the Everfall instead than you'll miss the quest and a few quests in the Witchwood that follow.

It's easy to have missed it or to have gotten the quest and never notice. Right after you (very early game spoiler) wake up from your nap in the Encampment to drive off the hydra, a villager runs up to you and asks you about the battle. He offhandedly mentions Quina, but you have to return to Cassardis to actually get the quest. It's pretty easy to continue the next story quest instead and miss your opportunity.

If you did happen to go back to Cassardis and picked up the quest without noticing, you're locked out of it once you get to Gran Soren and explore the Pawn Guild's spooky basement.

Oh, is that the woman who was at the very beginning of the game? I thought she was your wife or something, she never spoke to me or appeared again throughout the whole game so I figured it was just a throwaway character. I found an abbey in the woods but there wasn't anything to do there. I definitely don't remember ever seeing the name Quina, which I feel like I would remember since that's that fat food monster thing from Final Fantasy 9.

The story of this game is pretty much garbage, honestly. There's some cool stuff going on at the end but in general it feels like very little attention was paid to it. It's just a thrown-together framework to get you fighting monsters. I gave up on trying to be a completionist and seek out sidequests when I randomly failed that flower quest for walking 20 feet down the road at the very beginning.

edit: I get what the problem was. I have a VERY fuzzy recollection of the guy running up that you're talking about. I think he said he didn't know where Quina was, I thought "Who the gently caress is Quina?" and no further hints were given ever again.

You must have the shortest attention span in the world.

And what story there is is great; the only problem is that there isn't much story for most of the game except in sidequests.

Your other choices are incompetent effete villager, child bride, ancient child bride, your cousin, very inconvenient innkeeper, and fat old guy. There are probably a couple others and I'm not counting Mercedes since she's not easy to get.

So yes, I want everything to do with you titty shopkeeper (also her name is Madeleine, you insensitive prick. She's not just a tight bodice overflowing with firm yet yielding milky flesh).

Yeah, this. A well-designed game wouldn't expect you to remember the name of an NPC who only had a single line of dialogue which was along the lines of "Get away from me," and then go BACKWARD from the direction the game is urging you to go with no hint except for that character's name to keep yourself from being locked out of a whole questline.

It cracks me up that Quina seems specifically made for the captured love interest angle but I don't think I've ever heard of anyone actually having that happen unless they were specifically aiming for it. So far I've ended up with Fournival and then Valmiro, which I have no complaints about because Fat Crook Damsel In Distress out of loving nowhere had me close to tears from laughing so hard. Beats an accidental lesbian relationship with a child bride. I still can't believe either of those characters were even options, jesus.

My first time ending it brought in the most boring possible romance option, the Duchess. Yawn.

EDIT: According to the wiki, virtually any character aside from plot-important ones like the Duke and Dragonforged can be your romance partner. Even bit characters like Maul; he likes skulls and has an escort quest. Now there's someone I want to rescue :allears:

I want it to be Mercedes because it sucks that she just disappears after Julien is a dickbag to her. Though it was kinda disappointing she just gets her rear end kicked and cries about it if you don't kill Julien. Who you can then resurrect and will fall in love with you if you visit him in the dungeon. What a butt.

What's the Fulmination spell doing when I push square/triangle? It stops doing damage to things and I get a lightning bolt that goes to my party members, but other than look cool, it doesn't seem to be doing anything.

I had to look it up, because I didn't realize it did anything.

quote:

This spell has different two forms:
*Surrounds the caster with an electric aura that continuously damages nearby enemies. The caster can walk at a slow pace and cancel the spell by jumping.

*Electrifies other party members by pressing the attack button, dealing damage to any enemy they're climbing on while the caster stays still.

It's also probably one of the coolest magic things (edit: poo poo i meant brontide) I've ever seen in a video game. But then again so is every other spell in Dragon's Dogma. I think every game developer in the world should look at Dragon's Dogma's spells and attacks before developing their own magic stuff.

Last summer, I was showing off Dark Arisen to my friends after a pen & paper gaming session. I was playing Sorcerer, and I hadn't unlocked any of my cool spells yet so I was getting my rear end handed to me by those bandits outside Gran Soren. My friends laughed at me and how lovely the Sorcerer class looked. Then I got a few levels and came back to those bandits . I casted Necromancy ("what's that?") and then Brontide ("did you just make a whip out of lightning?"), and then everything got blown up by lightning and ghosts. My friends mostly reacted with "What the gently caress is going on" to the whole thing.

And the best part is that even the huge, gently caress-off spells like High Gicel and High Bolide aren't even the most broken thing in the game. Great Sacrifice is such a great loving spell concept it's unbelievable. Everything about it is amazing. The whole concept of shooting an ally's soul at an enemy is super cool from the get-go, but the execution of the spell is superb as well. I love the fact that the game slows down and goes black & white while you aim it. I love the fact that the recoil makes it look like you just fired a cannon. And then there's the fact that your pawn's soul screams when it explodes. The spell is just so good aaaaaaaa

I was actually aiming for Mercedes but somehow ended up with Quina as my LI. I just wanted to help her fulfill her dream, which was never mentioned before but was clearly super important to her, not go steady.

It was kind of funny to have her and the forest witch in my house though.

The lighting whip is Brontide. Which is actually kind of garbage, I find, being harder to use and doing less damage than High Levin. Fulimnation is where you make the aura of lightning around you. It's probably one of the best spells to use on BBI; a number of enemies are weak to lightning, and if you can manage to cast the High version, they are going down.

If you like the game much at all then yeah, probably. I tooled around in the base game for a while before I finally bothered getting DA and it's pretty great. The new content is really cool and you definitely appreciate the quality of life additions like the extra portcrystals/eternal ferrystone after playing vanilla a bit.

I never played Dragon's Dogma. I got DD: DA for 360 today and am confused about the installable content. I have the HD texture pack installing right now. Dark Arisen's bonus content takes up too much space on the disk for the regular DD textures. If you don't install them then the game will use ugly low-res textures for everything.
