Call Gespenst!
Well to be fair, the Federation sort of isn't that much of a threat, and really only survived SEED because of divine intervention. And even now, their notGMs are totally awful, and can't hold a candle to their equivalents in UC. Meanwhile, Jesus Kira has gone into hiding, and quite frankly ZAFT would happily sit back and munch popcorn as they watched aliens invade Earth.

Not to mention, every mobile suit in SEED outside of a couple of Gundams (such as the aforementioned Freedom) is powered by glorified batteries because of the Neutron Jammer nonsense. Combat literally cannot last longer than several minutes before one's energy supply goes flat.

...Then again, this never stopped Dendoh from kicking rear end, and that literally had batteries.

And let's not forget that the only way the Neutron Jammers work as described in-series is literally Because The Plot Says SoTM.

I forget the exact details, but the Neutron Jammers (as described in-series/liner notes) only stop a certain part of an electrical/nuclear reaction, while the rest of the equation is never mentioned nor addressed, but is still affected by the jammers. Despite modern science stating that the reaction would continue on even with the one part being jammed as described. So yeah, the big overarching energy crisis in the Cosmic Era, and a big background plot point? It literally boils down to "It works this way Because Shut UpTM". No wonder the people who worked on SEED/Destiny don't want to explain how the in-series technology works.

It was only the Gundams that couldn't fight more than a few minutes, and even then only the first generation. It was their special armor that was draining all that power. The second generation of EF Gundams had much larger batteries to go with their bulkier bodies, but they also had other time-limiting factors restricting them.

And would you really have preferred some ridiculous technobabble explanation for how neutron jammers work? No, of course not.

Ah, apologies - evidently forgot the details on my end.

But yeah, I think the neutron jammer stuff was mainly to A) Avoid rehashing UC too much given what they were already starting with and B) We do unfortunately live in a world cynical enough where you'd have a lot of fans griping 'well why don't they just nuke each other?' regardless of whether or not there'd be a treaty (especially Gundam's existing precedent with how well this actually gets adhered to), so forcing a lack of them probably made things easier.

Look, they wouldn't be very good alien invaders if they could be scared away by mobile suits.

Actually, by "they don't seem to have much firepower with the exception of one bit" (a more faithful reproduction of the line), I assume they literally mean just Grendizer, because their definition of "a weapon that doesn't suck" is "super robot," and the planet hasn't deployed or in some cases even discovered a single one of its super robots yet.

e: actually, it's probably my fault again for taking something to mean "one group's worth of decent weaponry" instead of "one part of the planet (Japan) has any firepower" but the point still stands.

That does make some kind of sense. In super robot terms Mobile Suits hardly do any damage at all.

The old ZAFT would have (and apparently did); the new ZAFT is quite a bit more devious/cunning. Of course, the Feds are still dumb enough to try and fight both ZAFT and world-killing aliens; unless, of course, Z actually makes the Federation somehow more sane, which would honestly be far more impressive than making a few SEED characters more tolerable.

As for Neutron Jammers...they don't make much sense in the show, and their usefulness is a complete mystery in a world filled with multiple magical energy sources. Why don't we just blame negative proton energy and desperately hope people have no scientific literacy?

Although, to be fair, if SEED is more than a guilty pleasure to anyone, I doubt their literate in anything important at all...

Mission 5 (Rand) - Moon Riders

Outside, Rand and Mel find all the snow gone from the ground... and no indication that it simply melted away.
Gunleon is also detecting some kind of unknown particles in the air inside this area, and Rand tells Mel to write down every last detail of what they're seeing in her notebook. Rand thinks that, unless he’s mistaken, the whole area they're looking at got warped from somewhere else.
There’s no time to think, though, as they hear another ringing sound signaling a new warp.

Several units are dropped into the area and, in the pink one, Holland is confused as the last thing he remembers was them busting into the "Coralian's Zone".
Matthew, in the orange unit, also notes that it went from day to night.

Holland asks Talho to determine their position and, while she’s trying to do so, she points out that some army troops are nearby.
Holland wonders if they were also moved here after chasing them through the Coralian. Meanwhile, the army commander wonders if this is the work of the Kute-class Coralian.
They quickly spot the Gekkostate units, members of an armed anti-government group, whom they have orders to capture, or if impossible, kill them.

Matthew is taken aback by the sudden attack but Stoner (yes, Stoner) was expecting it as they, the Gekkostate, have long been a thorn on the military’s side.
Hap figures one should strike while the iron’s hot but Hilda notices someone else in the battlefield…no one else recognizes that orange machine but they figure it doesn’t belong to the military.

: Darling! Those darker units are attacking them!
: drat! The other warps didn’t bring over whole battles like this!
: Well, they attacked first, so it’s not like we have a choice!
: Oh, you heard me?
: Answer me. Who are you? What is this place?
: Do ya really got time to ask all that right now?

: What do we do, Holland? Do we run or fight back?!
: If we fled from the army, we'dd be disgracing the Gekkostate name!
: Sounds good.
: Hey, you! Them jarheads are gonna attack anything that moves so, if you don’t feel like dying, lend us a hand!
: Well, they DID start attacking out of nowhere, so that helps your case...Alright, I’ll help out.
: I’m the wandering repairman and vice-leader of the Beater Services, Rand Travis…
: People know me as: THE HEAT.
: "THE HEAT"? Talk about old-fashioned.
: Matthew! Is this really the place to chit-chat?!
: Sorry, honey!
: I’m Holland, leader of the Gekkostate. Nice to meet ya.
: Ditto! I'll fill you in on where this is once things have calmed down!
: If that’s settled, then, let’s get to it! Y'all ready, guys?
: Hap, Ken-goh! The Gekko Go's charging in, too!
: Eureka, can you do this?
: You don’t need to worry about me.
: Heh, I see…
: Alrighty, then! Let's get this moonlit party rolling!

: Some night-time Lifting, eh? I reckon this ain't too bad!
: Heh…what cool gang.
: Let’s go, you lot! Give this rotten army a show of our Lifting!

Victory Condition: All enemies shot down
Mission Failure: Any event unit shot down
Skill Point: Clear the mission by the end of turn 3

Yeeeaaaaaaaah, we’ve got the cool Gekkostate crew with us! Let’s take a look at our new friends:

Terminus 909, Terminus 606, Terminus 808 (Holland, Matthew/Stoner, Hilda)
Pilot Skills – Holland:
  • Lift Technique L5 – Increases Accuracy, Crit Ratio and gives a chance to outright dodge an incoming attack
  • Morale+ (Dodge)
  • Commander L1
Spirit Commands – Holland
  • Focus (15)
  • Sense (20)
Pilot Skills – Matthew:
  • Lift Technique L3
  • Support Defend L1
  • Morale+ (Dodge)
Spirit Commands – Matthew
  • Accelerate (20)
Spirit Commands – Stoner
  • Scan (1)
Pilot Skills – Hilda:
  • Lift Technique L2
  • Support Attack L1
  • Cooperative Attack
Spirit Commands – Hilda
  • Alert (ひらめき) (10)
Features:
  • LFO (Lift Finding Operation) – Moving while airborne does not consume EN
Squad Leader Bonus – Holland: +20% damage against aerial enemies
Squad Leader Bonus – Matthew: +10% Evasion Rate
Squad Leader Bonus – Hilda: +20% Money Earned

Holland’s Voice Actor: Keiji Fujiwara (other known works: Ali Al-Saachez on Gundam 00, Axel in Kingdom Hearts, Dinobot (:black101:) on the Beast Wars dub and a billion others)
Matthew’s Voice Actor: Akio Nakamura (other known works: Lei Wulong in the Tekken OAV and a few other minor parts.)
Stoner’s Voice Actor: Yasunori Matsumoto (other known works: Guy Cecil in Tales of the Abyss, Ed “The Ripper” Harrelson in Gundam SEED MSV Astray, Mellowlink in Armor Hunter Mellowlink and many others)
Hilda’s Voice Actress: Mayumi Asano (other known works: Gascogne in Vandread, Sprocket in Viewtiful Joe and several others)

All three Terminus units are squaddie material, with the biggest stand-out being Holland; while Matthew and, especially, Hilda are rather weak to be in the frontlines, Holland is right up there with Gain as a squaddie that has no problem taking to the frontlines and he’ll serve you well throughout the game.
Holland comes with an ALL and an ammo-based TRI attack, which makes him a great mook hunter (and he’ll, eventually, learn Boost!); Matthew has Accelerate and Stoner as a backup, which makes him a versatile squaddie with both decent offense and useful spirits.
Hilda is clearly the least useful of the three but, regardless, she’s still a squaddie with decent range, movement and flying, which already makes her stand-out a bit more (be prepared for her to take a hit every now and then, though).

The Terminus units are all worth a space in your squads but, if you insist on picking one, pick Holland.

Gekko Go (Talho Yuki/Hap/Ken-goh)
Pilot Skills:
  • Lift Technique
  • Support Attack L1
  • Focused Attack (集束攻撃) – Reduces the ALL attack penalty against enemy groups of 2/3 units from 20%/40% to 5%/25%
Spirit Commands - Talho:
  • Accelerate (10)
  • Focus (15)
Spirit Commands - Hap:
  • Scan (1)
Spirit Commands - Ken-goh:
  • Snipe (20)
  • Strike (20)
Squad Leader Bonus: Adjacent Squads take 10% less damage

Talho’s Voice Actress: Michiko Neya (other known works: Ouka Nagisa in SRW OGs, Melissa Mao in Full Metal Panic, Natalia L.K. Lanvaldear in Tales of the Abyss and many, many others)
Hap’s Voice Actor: Tarô Yamaguchi (other known works: Kagemaru in Godannar, Borma in Ghost in the Shell and some others)
Ken-goh’s Voice Actor: Tamio Ohki (other known works: Captain Tashiro in Gunbuster, General Miwa in Daimos, Albert Schacht in Mobile Suit Gundam MS IGLOO and many others)
Gidget's Voice Actress: Fumie Mizusawa (other known works: Erika Kurumi in Precure All Stars, Elise Schmitz in Freezing and several others)

The Gekko Go is pretty much a flying Iron Gear but trading the higher-powered attacks for added movement and mobility; Talho’s Lift Technique gives the ship added accuracy and survivability with the Double Image effect.
Like the Iron Gear, it has piss for armor which is somewhat mitigated by its 2L size but it still can’t take much of a pummeling. That's fine, of course, as the ship is clearly designed to hang back and attack from afar (despite Talho’s leader bonus).
Keep it out of harm’s way and it should work well enough but there are better ships in the game.

Nirvash (Eureka)
Pilot Skills:
  • Lift Technique L3
  • SP Regen (SP回復) – Unique Skill – recovers 10 SP at the start of each player phase
Spirit Commands:
  • Focus (15)
  • Accelerate (20)
Squad Leader Bonus: Accuracy and Evasion Rate +10%

Eureka’s Voice Actress: Kaori Nazuka (other known works: Nunnally Vi Britannia in Code Geass, Shino and Subaru in the .hack series and many others)

You want to use the Nirvash. Don’t question it, just do it.
This thing is already pretty decent and Eureka is on par with Gainer as a pilot (plus, that leader bonus paired with a Focus that, effectively, costs 5 SP means she’ll hit and dodge everything forever) and the unit will only get stronger as the game goes along.
I won’t go too deep to avoid spoilers but just be sure that you’ll NEVER be disappointed with (the TV series’) Nirvash.

This is about the point where the game figures you’ve had enough of the training wheels and starts throwing harder Skill Points at you; three turns would be plenty if the enemies were closer or if it were just mooks but that battleship is surprisingly bulky.
You’ll need all those three turns to kill everyone and it’ll still be tight.

Also, yes, this area IS pitch-black.

No one can get into attack range, so everyone just moves forward.

Enemy Phase!

Rand quickly figures out that, whatever those particles in the air are, the Gekkostate crew are able to ride on them with their boards (they call them Trapar – Transparence Light Particle).
Mel has never heard anything about particles or boards like these and Rand wonders if they're from another world entirely, and not just from another part of this one.

Matthew draws the attention of three Mon-soono-10s; only two attack from inside his range, though.

: Stoner! You better be taking some good pictures of my Lifting!
: …
: What’s up? You didn't forget to put film in the camera, right?
: I can’t explain but I feel like something's off here…or, rather, with the air around here…
: Something off? How so?
: Matthew…we may have been taken somewhere unthinkable.
: Well, save it for later! We need to knock these jarheads out first!

Aha! See how he phased out there? That means Double Image was triggered.

One of the western-most Mon-soonos decides to try his luck with Holland.

: I dunno where this is but so long as I can feel the Trapar waves, I can still Lift!
: And I ain't about to get dropped by anyone!

Holland’s high Lift Technique means he gets a big boost to his crit ratio – these Mon-soonos are just bulky enough to avoid being oneshotted.

Another Mon-soono also gets in Eureka’s range – her strongest attack is her TRI but I believe her second strongest does have a dynamic finisher.
I’ll show it off by the end of this mission (even if I have to resort to the special disk).

: This place… This isn’t where we were…?

Eureka pulls some sick tricks. Much better than beamspam, no?

The eastern mooks all draw closer while the battleship and its escort of three upgraded Mon-soono-20s stay put.

Player Phase!

Here’s a quick look at the enemy’s (*breathe in*) Flying Battleship of the United Federation of Predgio Towers’ Army: it’s very bulky compared to everything else we’ve seen (much more than our two battleships, even) and, as such, is the real obstacle to getting the skill point.
Its attacks are both 2-6 and 2-7 range, so you’ll want to keep your troops out of that range in order to make it move towards us – if you don’t, you will NOT get the Skill Points because your troops won’t reach it in time.
It should be noted that the ship’s captain knows Commander L1, giving those Mon-soono-20s a bonus to accuracy/evasion, so approach them with caution.

We don’t have time to kill weakened enemies – our only option is to keep moving forward weakening all that we can and letting them kill themselves against us during a counterattack.
Most of Rand’s attacks don’t have very good ratings against airborne enemies, so he needs to Attune himself to hit reliable (miss too many attacks and you can kiss the skill point goodbye, too).

: Mel, you know anything about them?!
: No! There’s nothing about them in my notebook!
: Thought so… These folk might've come from some place we didn't even know existed…

At least they can’t do jack to Gunleon.

Matthew gets sent eastward to start weakening another full-HP Mon-soono; meanwhile, Holland weakens the last one of the western group and they should all die during the next turn.

Or, rather, we’ll take one of them out with Hilda because she can’t reach anything else.

: It must be SO tough being in the army…having to shoot first, ask questions later.
: Still, if that’s how you wanna play, I’ll play!

Alright.

Eureka moves over to Matthew and leaves the last Mon-soono-10 primed to be killed.

FYI, the Gekko Go was moved to the frontlines with Strike cast in hopes of drawing the attention of the Mon-soono-20s around the battleship.

Enemy Phase!

The rest of the Iron Gear forces catch up, with Garrod and Jiron berating Rand for running on ahead, despite the fact that they were all helping look for info on Mel’s dad.
Rand apologizes, saying that once he realized that a warp was coming, he moved without thinking. Gain asks who the board-riding folk are and Mel introduces them, saying we’re helping them out of a jam.

The enemy troops figures we’re in with the Gekkostate and open fire upon the Iron Gear.
While Jiron is taken by surprise, Elchi figures that, if that’s the way it’s gonna be, we’ll just have to fight back. Gainer stops her, though, saying that these guys probably got warped here just like Garrod, so maybe we can talk to them and stop the battle.
Rand congratulates the kid on his quick-thinking, making Sara shake her head that he didn’t even consider that idea before starting to fight an unknown enemy…to which Rand says he didn’t have a whole lot of time to think while being shot at.
Regardless, Rand gets in touch with both Gekkostate and United Federation troops and proposes a cease-fire.

Holland asks Talho if they know their location yet and Gidget, the Gekko’s navigator, says neither the sensors nor the compass are working properly.
Hap notes that they’re not broken, though, and wonders what could be wrong. Plus, Holland remembers feeling a bit strange some time ago and asks Eureka if she has any idea what happened.
She doesn’t but she feels something odd about this situation and Holland figures they should take Rand up on his cease-fire request. The army troops are also willing to stop the fight in order to figure out where they’ve been taken to.

That is, until someone hidden nearby attacks the military.
Rand asks what the gently caress, seeing how the negotiations were going well and everyone says they didn’t fire. It’s too late, though, as the Fed Captain now thinks the cease-fire talks were just a trap and gives the order to attack everyone.
Our troops can’t last under that heavy bombardment and have no choice but to fight back (Rand is very annoyed that someone screwed his negotiation). Holland calls Rand back, asking for their continued help if the Feds aren’t willing to stop and Rand, begrudgingly, agrees to do so.

All western Mon-soono-10s gun for Holland and Hilda, getting shot down one by one (Hilda does take a hit for 1400 damage, mind).

On the eastern front, both weakened mooks go after Matthew.

They’re also dispatched.

Now this is my bad: I didn’t check the range on these Mon-soono-20s and two of them snipe at Matthew from out of attack range; one of them does move closer but Matthew misses him.
Normally, this wouldn’t be too bad but this tight Skill Point offers less-than-usual leeway, so it is worrisome.

Thankfully, one of them goes after Holland who can fight back.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIvkdtqhVVs
Radical, dude!

Also nice, the enemy Battleship moves closer but we’re not in the clear yet.

Player Phase!

Last turn and we still have a lot to do; first and foremost, the remaining Mon-soono-20s need to be weakened so they can be killed on their turn.
The Fed Captain’s command aura is boosting their dodge rates, so Rand needs to cast Attune on Matthew.

Talho also gets an attune and takes aim.

: Ken-goh! Prepare to attack!
: Leave it to me, Talho. You focus on piloting.
: Keep in mind that we’re almost flat broke. Don’t go wasting any ammo, you two.
: I don't need a reminder! Let's get in there!
: Do you really understand…?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUxOoIMQzoQ
And here’s our first instance of “the bounce”. :japan:
Also, yes, the Gekko can be surprisingly dodgy (for a battleship).

Hilda scores a perfectly-timed critical hit on the last full-health mook.

Rand takes a jab at the ship from as far as possible to avoid drawing the attention of the Mon-soonos.

One of the main problems with this Skill Point is how far your reinforcements comes from; if a squad doesn’t have Jiron and his Boost command, they’re not getting in range of anything.

: drat, they're even faster than a Doran!
: And, in that case, all I can do is go with my gut!

Not a whole lot of damage but we need everything we can get.

Holland covers Hilda with his command aura and gets ready to hit the battleship with his strongest attack: Assault.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZwUjUMS3N1o

Even with a critical hit, Eureka isn’t strong enough to deal enough damage to a 2L sized enemy – we’ll need everything to play ball on the enemy phase and, if someone decides to snipe, we’re hosed.

Enemy Phase!

Holland and Matthew are attacked by, respectively, one and two Mon-soonos and they deal with them accordingly.

The absolutely biggest issue here was this one Mon-soono that attacked Hilda point-blank; this meant she couldn’t use her Long Range Laser Cannon and had to rely on her Boomerang Knife, which wasn’t strong enough to kill it if it didn’t crit.
Luckily, it did.

And, here’s the check-mate: the battleship attacks Hilda and she can wrap things up.

Whew.

Now, before we wrap up the plot, here’s the dialogue for people who didn’t get in range and, also, Eureka’s dynamic finisher for her Cut-Back Drop Turn attack.

-Garrod Vs. Anything-
: What the hell?! The way they fly is all over the place! I can't keep up!
: These guys…are they surfing the air?!

-Gainer Vs. Anything-
: These machines are neither Overmen nor Walker Machines…!
: But I can't give in! If they’re more interested in attacking than talking, I’ve no choice but to fight back!

-Gain Vs. Anything-
: (The attack that screwed up the negotiations didn’t come from us…)
: (Who was it, then? And what was he after…?)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lqxToGIp5vo

The problem is solved but every other member of our crew wonders about these new units, unlike anything they’ve seen before, and Garrod wonders if they’ve also been warped here.
Rand confirms and figures they should talk to, hopefully, straighten things out. Stoner thanks us, on behalf of the Gekkostate, for coming to their aid.
Matthew, however, finds Rand a bit weird: he said he’s a repairman but he figures he’s much more suited as a demolition man. Of course, Rand bristles at this but Mel stops him from doing anything.
Either way, Holland also wishes to speak with us to figure out where this is and who we are (Rand's also got stuff he wants to ask them).
He and his crew return to the Gekko Go to find a safe place to land it.

: It’s coming…
: What’s wrong, Eureka…?!

*Ringing noise!*

: W-what was that?! I heard something!
: That ringing…is it happening again?!
: Not good! Guys, get back into the Iron Gear!
: What’s going on, repairman?!
: Sorry! Ain't no time to explain! Y'all need to run, too!!
: Run?! Run where?! From what?!
: What is it?! What’s happening?!
: It’s a warp! This whole place is getting warped!
: It’s here…

: AAAAAAAAH!!
: Urgh, drat it! Are we all getting warped?!

Man, is it great to see the true Eureka Seven. The Nirvash is awesome and playing Z2 only reminds you of how good the Nirvash was. Holland is one of the best non-main pilots in the game, Matthew is pretty useful as a subpilot thanks to having both Accel and a subpilot in Che Guevara, and Hilda...isn't half bad either, I guess. I don't tend to use her by the endgame, unlike the rest.

While the models of the Eureka Seven units just creep me out, their animations are just beautiful. Lots of movement.

Also, you forgot Keiji Fujiwara's latest Eureka Seven role. Then again, God knows I would like to forget all of that happened.

Yeeeaaaah, about the Japanese Beast Wars dub......it's poo poo. As in, "let's rewrite EVERY GODDAMN THING to make Beast Wars into a slapstick comedy" kind of poo poo. No, I am not kidding; they took David Kaye's wonderful Megatron performance and turned the character into a coward afraid of going into combat. I wish I was making this up. Not sure what happened to Dinobot in the dub...but suffice to say that he probably wasn't spared the rewrite axe.

As for the new recruits, glad to see the proper Eureka 7 crew here. Watch the Nirvash in particular as we go along. If you've been reading Caphi's Z2.1 LP, you're slowly going to realize the other reason why the E7 cast there was such a disappointment. Aside from the E7 movie being a gigantic insulting pile of poo poo, that is.

Oh, and since someone will ask this question: Yes, the stuttering on Storywriter is intentional. The original track from the show had it as well.

I guessed you hadn't put that entirely because of the second reason. This is something I'll never get, Eureka Seven is a beautiful series, how come every time they try to do something else with it, they fail horribly? I seriously wish they remembered why Eureka Seven was so good.

Also since I didn't say it before, Lunar Cocoon is my favourite Turn-A BGM, and if there's one song I'll always remember from that series, it's this one. I can't really explain why, but I love it, and every scene with it just felt right.

I remember this stage giving me huge trouble the first time I played because one of the Terminuses would always get shot down on the second or third turn.

Also, regardless of whether the actual show was good or not, I love the Beast Wars Dub's rap OP. WAR! WAR!

Also, E7's music is indeed some of the best in Z's already really strong soundtrack.Though Storywriter's easily my least favorite tune from the series. We'll see the better ones soon enough.

See Rands route takes the slow burn to getting its plot going, rather than jumping from the end of the first mission we get to collect a sizable crew and then jump them all to America. I really appreciate it since it gives a small chance to appreciate the world BEFORE the game kicks into high gear.

And yes the Nirvash is amazing. It doesn't matter if it's Eureka or Renton In the pilot seat that thing remains the best unit in the game, and it's very likely for the pilot to be your top Ace with no competition.

Also we meet Holland, who along with Gain is the third person that Rand really hands out with, his Camille and Shinn if you will.

Well, so far, there's at least two worlds - most probably three or even five.

We've got:
-UC Gundam and Super Robot world
-Gundam SEED world
-Postapocalyptic X Gundam and King Gainer world, which may or may not be one of the above
-Turn A Gundam world, which may or may not be one of the above
-Eureka 7 world, which may or may not be one of the above

So far, people have been warping back and forth between these worlds willy-nilly. Maybe we'll end up warping to the Eureka 7 world for the start of their plot like Rand and co warped into Turn A Gundam?

Everyone pretty much calls Holland out on being an unrepentant rear end in a top hat to Renton for no adequate reason, and it's spilled over into him alienating every member of ZEUTH that isn't the Gekkostate, who also feels he needs to grow up.

If there is one thing this game is incredibly good at? it's using the interwoven narratives to create an intense feeling that everything is just getting worse from chapter to chapter. And that stuff helps play into it. There's a real good reason that Z is help to be one of the best games in the SRW series.

Setsuko Route Chapter 5

Last time on Super Robot Wars Z, Glory Star's continued warping around. Probably because Setsuko got Teleportitis or something (Let's see how many people get that one). They ended up getting arrested with a group of Super Robot pilots after fighting off aliens. Arrested by the Cosmic Era Earth Alliance. This will be fun.

Current Top Aces
1. Denzel
2. Kouji
3. Toby
4. Maria
5. Setsuko

With the newcomers here, I give them each a point of HP, Energy, and Accuracy.

Duke Fleed borrows Setsuko's Booster for this mission, he's going to need it.

I also give him a more permanent Chobham Armor, which ups his HP by 500 and his Armor by 100

I then give Toby this Anti-Dust Module, which ups the Virgola 2's Ground Ranking to S, mostly because it's there.

Kappei's old grandpa is still looking for him, but the kid's been running off early and getting home late. His grandmother is just glad he's an energetic little boy, but his mom plans to give him a stern talking to. Just because his dad is always out fishing is no excuse for him to act out.

Speaking of, she's glad old Heizaemon (whew) is finally done with his pottering around. He's been trying to find the legacy of their ancestors, you see, for months now, and he's made their families the laughing stock of the whole town as a result. But "is it really over," mumbles Heizaemon, "or has it just begun?"

Anyway, it's what he wants to talk to Kappei about - he might have found the text he was looking for. And if what's written there is the truth, he needs Ichitaro, and he needs to find that treasure quickly.

Meanwhile, Kouji is trying to convince the Alliance that they're Earthlings, but since the Extraterrestrial Research Lab doesn't exist in this universe, and more importantly, because their craft are unrecognized, their story isn't flying. Kouji can't believe they've fought so hard to protect the Earth for this.

Meanwhile, "Daisuke" asks Denzel what's going on. He's the same Duke Fleed, pilot of Grendizer, but he usually goes by his civilian identity of Daisuke Umon when not in the cockpit. Anyway, Denzel and Toby fill him and Hikaru in on the alternate world thing. And while our world is at the tail end of a long war against aliens, this must be this Earth's first encounter with theirs. They must be keeping us prisoner because we've seen them, suggests Setsuko. Or do they simply believe we're one of their existing enemies? Aliens are one thing, but our story is just insane. Besides, Maria can't blame them for looking askance at our robots. Grendizer is actual alien technology.

"What did you say?" Setsuko jumps out of her seat, drawing the attention of their Alliance guard. Whoops! Toby tries to smooth it over by saying she's just hungry; Denzel hopes they can at least be treated as human beings, as they can see we are.

"Human beings?" spits the Alliance captain. "We're not falling for what. We know you're siding with ZAFT!"

Team Grendizer doesn't even know what ZAFT is, but it just proves Toby's and Denzel's prediction right: they assume we're their existing enemies rather than something unknown. And they say they can prove it, too, by analyzing our DNA and proving we're altered humans.

Starting with Maria! The Alliance officers grab her and start dragging her away. This is bad - if they analyze her DNA, Duke knows they'll find out he and Maria aren't from Earth!

Luckily, their ship gets an S.O.S. just then; the commander has to go, but leaves guards outside the room.

Kouji points out that Maria could have kicked his rear end. She knows that, but she didn't want to. "He was... afraid," she says. "He looked at us with such fear and hate..."

What we just got is a personal taste of how Naturals and Coordinators treat each other in this world - not even recognizing the other as human beings. Team Grendizer looks to Denzel once again for information.

They introduce themselves, so let's run through them quickly. Kouji pilots the Double Spazer, and Setsuko recognizes him as the former pilot of Mazinger Z. Where's Mazinger, anyway? Kouji says it's tied up in experiments at the Photonic Power Laboratory. Hikaru Makiba pilots the Marine Spazer, and Maria Grace Fleed, Duke's sister, pilots the Drill Spazer. She shares a name with Duke Fleed, but again, he goes by Daisuke Umon and won't tell us why - that he's keeping the fact that he and Maria are from Planet Fleed secret from our own military.

We're all glad to be working together, but back to the explanation...

Which a fellow prisoner here is also very interested in. His name is Takeshi Tsukikage, leader and manager of the "Blue Fixer," here with his head of research Ella Quinstein and two of his fighters, Jack Oliver and Raita Hokuto. Fighters? Denzel asks, does that make them military? Actually, Blue Fixer is the research arm of this world's environmental committee; they concern themselves with extraterrestrial life and how it can coexist with Earth life. The Alliance has called them in to study us; if we play our cards right, Tsukikage assures us this arrangement right here could be mutually beneficial.

It sounds like they'll be much more helpful than the Alliance, but suddenly Raita roars that it's our fault so many people died in the attack. Kouji snaps that that wasn't our fault, we were the ones trying to save it! Oliver suggests it might have been a trick to gain their trust.

Quinstein admonishes them both not to jump to conclusions - it's not scientific. They shut up, but they clearly haven't been swayed. Still, at least someone's willing to listen to us.

Denzel begins by swearing to Tsukikage on his honor that he's about to give a complete, unbiased account of what's happened to them. He starts at the moon...

Back on the shores of Suruga Bay, it's Kappei versus Kozuki in what they claim is a final duel. Kozuki just has one question, though - what are Aki and Michi doing here? Aki says Kappei just called them out here; Michi is ready to administer first aid if anyone gets hurt. "These pigs? They're my bodyguards!" smirks Kappei.

This Hamamoto fucker (are there any little boys in Kappei's village who aren't dickbags?) starts giving him poo poo about his crazy senile grandfather, and that is something Kappei won't take.

But before the fight can break out, they spot something over the horizon...

Chapter 5: Day of Awakening

It's the robots from yesterday - and they're attacking the city! Aki and Michi start running back there to find their parents; Kappei wants to stay out of it.

The Alliance guard deploys, along with the Blue Fixer fighters, but they get routed easily, and Oliver and Raita pull out. If they can't do any damage, they'd be better off helping the civilians escape.

But then Kappei hears Ichitaro's voice from the ocean, urging him to come to the shore - and then jump!

A huge ship catches him and he finds himself on its bridge. His grandfather calls this ship the Beal I, the treasure of their ancestors, a weapon against Gaizock. And they're ready to fight back. Kappei just needs to get changed.

His grandmother has prepared his suit and everything. "What am I, a space handyman or something?"

Just wait, Kappei.

Hey, nice ascot. Heizaemon says it's a piloting suit engineered to protect his body from impact. His mother is there too, and she doesn't like this at all, but Heizaemon drops him down a chute...

And into the Zambird as it deploys! Kappei's always wanted to pilot a fighter jet, but unfortunately, he has no idea how. Whoops! Heizaemon tells him to remember "Chapter 33, Lesson 1," and Kappei instantly knows what to push to make the thing fly!

Apparently, Heizaemon has been secretly putting Kappei through post-hypnotic training in his sleep for months. Another trick from the ancestors. "Listen, Kappei! The claws of evil are reaching for this Earth - an evil the ancient texts of the ancestors call Gaizock. It is the duty of the Jin family to fight against them!"

And the Zambird has another trick, "Ace Change," which transforms it into the robot Zambo Ace, of course. Heizaemon and Ichitaro return the Beal I to its hiding place underwater, entrusting the battle to Kappei, who has been just waiting for the chance to teach those monsters to wreck his town.

Right! Our objective right now is to beat up these enemies here, the Battle Mastery hasn't revealed itself yet though.

Invincible Super Man Zambot 3
Kappei Jin - Zambo Ace/Zambird
Voiced by Nobuyo Ooyama

Skills
* Prevail(Level 3) - As the character takes damage, hit rate, evasion, defense, and critical rate will increase.
* Resolve - Pilot starts the stage with +5 Will
* Will+ (Hit) - Pilot gains +1 Will every time they hit an enemy.

Spirit Commands:
* Guts(25): The caster regains all HP.

Squad Leader Bonus
*Squad gains the effect of the Will +(Damaged) skill.

Kappei is a strong pilot overall. With Guts there's no problem just rushing into the fray. One unique thing about him is that he'll gain Will absurdly fast, with two skills that let him gain it faster and his Squad Leader bonus effectively gives him a third. He's all about getting powered up fast. The Zambo Ace isn't the strongest unit around and doesn't really fit his strengths though. But that's not much of a worry, he'll be getting a better mech fairly soon.

But that's for later, right now we have to handle things here.

: Come on, Gaizock! Eat the power of my ancestors' treasure!

Hmmm not bad at all. With nothing else to do, I end this turn.

Oliver and Raita are trying to figure out what that robot is. It's not a Mobile suit, but it might be a private operation. Something of Kazami's? Oliver says no, he'd have heard if anything had come out of Trinity City. It wouldn't be the huge cyborg from the Mars Report, would it? Whatever it is, they have to tell Tsukikage; Oliver says he'll go make his report while Raita continues with the evacuation.

These guys being to move up to Kappei.

It really doesn't amount to much.

Especially since Kappei just healed off every bit of damage they did.

Now I end my turn without attacking, I did this because I thought it would make things easier, but it didn't really make any difference so whatever.

The main point is that I blew up the second jerk.

Having beaten up some real live aliens, Kappei struts his stuff for the girls. Kozuki has more questions than praise, though - what's with Kappei's family?

Tsukikage's got the footage of that battle, and while that red robot beat the first wave, it looks like all the other alien squads are converging on Suruga Bay. However tough that thing is, it probably can't take on that whole force at once. The army is out of usable robots, and as we've seen, the Blue Fixer battlemechs are far from up to snuff. Setsuko says they and their mechs could handle it, but Denzel stops her. Given the situation, there are some things that are just out of reach. Tsukikage agrees that we're probably telling the truth about the parallel universe, and even that we may have the noblest intentions.

Sounds good to Team Grendizer. They were going to break out anyway.

Yes, the military would trust them even less, and yes, it would be a stupid move, but they have to protect the town. Quinstein is surprised they'd fight for citizens of another universe, but there it is - everyone on the Dizer Team is determined to do this.

And if that's how it's going to be, the Glory Star is going too.

Setsuko goes from down to up in half a second - maybe the first time her teammates have ever seen her smile, she admits.

Reinforcements arrive. "Bring 'em on!" says Kappei. "I'll kick all their butts!"

Even more arrive the moment he says that. Good job, Kappei. He tells Aki and Michi to get out of there; with this many aliens, they'll crush the whole town over them!

Oh, and he's got three turns starting now to take them all out.

Yup! This stage's Battle Mastery condition is that once the enemy reinforcements arrive, beat them in three turns. Oh yeah, and that first turn will be taken with you being unable to do anything no matter what. They arrive once Kappei, the only playable unit on the field, blows up the last enemy. The game then automatically moves him so you can't adjust his position. Probably the first real challenging Battle Mastery thus far!

All the guys begin got move towards Kappei, this is actually bad. Kappei can't handle them all at once and couldn't even reach them all before the time limit. The enemy phase ends with that.

Kappei doesn't think he can do it anymore.

: Don't think like that. If you don't think you can win, you definitely can't.
: A comm? Who's calling me?
: It doesn't matter who I am. Focus on the enemy.
: I know that! Don't tell me how to fight!
: There, that's what I wanted to hear. Besides, your backup's arrived.
: What backup?

Spazers are really good at getting us places fast! Duke calls the red robot and offers his help.

"Zambo Ace and I don't need any help!" sniffs Kappei.

The Dizer Team is surprised to hear a kid in there, but glad to know at least he's an Earthling. There's no time for introductions, though - we have to save the city as fast as we can, and we'll need all the firepower we've got! "Okay, fine!" grumbles Kappei. "You can do whatever you want!"

You'd expect a little gratitude, but that's not important right now.

What is important is getting those aliens good and smashed. And we're going to have to pull some trickery to do that. We have two turns to defeat them all, and they're quite spread out.

I have Hikaru scan them to get a good look at their stats.

They have two attacks we need to worry about. The Post movement attack has a Range of 3, while the other has a range of 6. Enemies will use the strongest attack that can hit, and will usually prefer not to move if possible. Of course, I can't get anybody in range for their 6 range attack in one turn. So they'll move towards the closest target to hit with their Post movement attacks.

Which is why I move Kappei away from the fight. I do not want those enemies in the water to move towards him, so I make him the furthest target. Two of them will still move up to him on the enemy phase, but that's fine, he take care of them.

Luckily, one is still in range for Zambo Ace's pistol.

: Those aliens are puttin' up a good fight!
: How lame would I be if I didn't fight just as hard?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vHY83Z1Jlmw

Unfortunately being in the water gives them a defensive bonus. Still not too much to handle.

Next I move up Duke Fleed, he is now the closest target to those guys in the water up there thanks to me moving Kappei.

Glory Star and the Spazers can clean up the remaining ones down here.

: Well, look at us! Charging out all by ourselves to save the people of another world!
: 1st. Lieutenant... I couldn't bear to stand by and watch civilians die.
: Very dashing, Setsuko.
: I'm sorry! I didn't mean to be insulting!
: Hey, don't sweat it. I'm right with you!
: A soldier's job has meaning when he does it in defense of something. Don't forget this moment, 2nd. Lieutenant.
: Yes, sir!

"Go Glory Star Go!"

Seriously, the hardest part of this mission is those two sitting in the water. You have to make sure they do not go towards Kappei or else getting the Battle Mastery is impossible.

Kouji opens up the barrage on the other side.

: Watch your backs, Hikaru, Maria! They may be scouts, but they're tough!
: Okay, Kouji! You be careful too!
: We have to survive to get back to our world, where Father and Goro are!

With everything done, I end the turn.

Naturally, the two closest to Kappei target him.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-W6iITTzYlE
They both go the same way.

And success! They move towards Duke Fleed, thus securing my victory.

: If their aim these last two days was to gather data...
: Then whoever's behind them must be after the Earth!

I don't think it's mathematically possible for these things to kill Grendizer.

Meanwhile Maria gets the kill on this one for targeting her. With her weakest attack.

The other gets the great idea to target Toby.

This one doesn't have the water to boost its defenses so it's handily one shot.

On my turn I move Kouji up to finish off the one Duke Fleed weakened last round.

Oh geez. I had been hoping that the Spazer Storm would finish it off, but it would seem its B in Water let the punk survive. Whatever, it'll be done next round.

I target this one since it has the higher HP.

It's still blown up.

And on the enemy phase the remaining two suicide on Kappei and Duke Fleed anyways so I win.

Hooray, the army's here! A little late...

But just in time to pull weapons on us and order us to come quietly - the red one, too. They're pinning a forcible escape on us and won't listen to excuses that we were authorized. This must have been their plan all along - let us go so they could accuse us of escaping and have an excuse to put us away. It was probably the army, though - it looked like Tsukikage and Quinstein were in the dark too. Not that admitting that helps us now.

Luckily, we have an escape plan - Heizaemon gets us all into the Beal I and jets! It sucks that we have to make enemies with the Alliance, but this was probably how it was going to go down to begin with.

"So that's the legacy of the Jin family he was talking about," mutters a shadowy figure. "Where will they go from here?"

And back on the Bandock, fat man isn't too broken up about his Domilars getting wrecked. "All material things are doomed to destruction," he rumbles. "This planet's natives are putting up a good fight. I like that. It makes for a better hunt."

Emperor Vega (goddammit) feels the need to point out that Grendizer isn't from Earth, but the big one says it's just as weak a prey. Was it really a threat to them? Poor Emperor Vega, no longer the ruler of the universe. Wandering, with no home, he has no choice but to pledge his cooperation to Gaizock.

: It's a good day! Gizzar! Bring me wine! We drink to the Emperor of Vega!
: By your will, Butcher!
: Bareta, prepare me a new Mechaboost!
: By your will, Butcher.
: All belongs to Gaizock. To me, Killer the Butcher.
: Hoh hoh hoh! Resist me with all your might, earthlings!
: Hoh hoh hoh hoh! Mwohohohohohoho!
: (Emperor Vega, this man... he's too dangerous...)
: (Mm. Yes, we may have signed a deal with the devil.)

Unfortunately this Kappei in a Gundam Universe, namely the Gundam SEED universe.

Frankly it's amazing he's still alive, what with the mass starvations that happened on Earth back during the Bloody Valentine War since Neutron Jammer's pretty much made the entire planet have almost no power (yes this is Thing in SEED)

No joke man. The Alliance is definitely Stupid Evil, which is kind of hilarious because the message that SEED is /trying/ to tell is one about racial tolerance and not being a bigot, etc etc. All of which is undermined by the fact that one of the factions is so One Note as to make everyone who watches the series actively hate it's guts.

As I always ask my friends, name me five people in the Earth Alliance in the show who are A) good people and B) don't jump ship to Orb at some point. Seriously, you can't without digging deep into the side stories and manga, and even then it's hard to find people who are part of the EA who aren't irredeemable monsters.
