Please note, due to my own lack of experience there are some technical issues in Secret and LeChuck's Revenge but I did get my poo poo together eventually. Half way through LeChuck's Revenge I bought a better headset which was most definitely needed. Apologies for the amateurish start but I hope I have redeemed myself So what is Monkey Island all about? I'll hand this one over to wikipedia: "Monkey Island is the collective name given to a series of five graphic adventure games. The first four games in the series were produced and published by LucasArts, formerly known as Lucasfilm Games. The fifth installment of the franchise was developed by Telltale Games in collaboration with LucasArts. The games follow the misadventures of the hapless Guybrush Threepwood as he struggles to become the most notorious pirate in the Caribbean, defeat the plans of the evil undead pirate LeChuck and win the heart of governess Elaine Marley. Each game's plot usually involves the mysterious Monkey Island and its impenetrable secrets." The original three games in the series were classic point-and-click adventure games, although the third abandoned the traditional controls and adopted a similar system LucasArts used in Full Throttle. The fourth game in the series adopted the GrimE engine as seen in Grim Fandango. The fifth instalment of the series makes use of keyboard and mouse controls. So what's this LP all about I will be playing all five parts of the series. Starting from The Secret Of Monkey Island then continuing on with Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge, The Curse Of Monkey Island, Escape From Monkey Island and then finishing up with The Tales Of Monkey Island. With the first two Monkey Island games I will be playing the revamped special editions, which I have never played before, so it will be a new and interesting experience for myself. I hope it's an interesting experience for those who have played the originals but not the special editions too. I will also be playing from memory too, let's hope that holds out... Are you providing commentary this time? I will be providing voice commentary. At first it may be a nostalgia trip though. Where is this game available? The special editions are available on Steam at £6.99 each or £10.99 in a bundle together. The Tales of Monkey Island are also available on Steam for £24.99 for the complete collection. I'm not sure on the American pricing but I can update this if someone let's me know. The complete Tales Of Monkey Island is also available at gog.com for $34.99. Unfortunately Curse & Escape are unavailable as a digital purchase, so for this LP I will be dusting off the cases and installing from my old CD-Roms. Bobbin Threadbare posted:Since you asked, by the way, the Special Editions are 10 dollars each American or 15 for the bundle. Tales is the same as it is on GOG. Edit: Spoiler talk I don't wish to prohibit any kind of talk on the series, but if it's regarding events not seen in the posted videos then please spoiler tag it. Even if it's giving me hints, pointing at something I've missed or making sure I do something in the series at a certain point then spoiler tag it, I will read all replies and will respond if I feel like it's necessary. I've been juggling back and forth on whether or not to do an LP of Escape, considering I have other LPs I really should finish up first... But still, will be great to see it eventually on here - its the first adventure game I really ever played and I still enjoy it, though its got some gaping flaws. For now though, let's see you discover THE SECRET OF MONKEY ISLAND™

Yesss, I love this series. I hope you do it justice. I almost forgot how comically over the top is the pirate with the glass eye. And the clients of the Scumm bar in general are surprisingly polite for being fearsome buccaneers. ...except the pirate leaders, of course. paradoxGentleman fucked around with this message at 19:51 on Jan 19, 2014 |

After buying a collection CD of monkey island 1&2 back in a day, those two games basically became my childhood. Nice to see someone doing a vlp of this because screenshots just will not make these games justice.

I played this on my Commodore 64, then bought the LucasArts treasury version (on floppies!) for my PC, then this version--my first Steam purchase. As soon as I saw the thread title, I started humming the theme song. I'm looking forward to this LP, especially since I've never played past the first game.

So many memories. When we got a new computer, mom picked up Curse, and we all fell in love with it. I hung out in mIRC chat rooms for monkey island, had a monkey island website on Geocities, basically did all the monkey island fanstuff available to my 11 year old self. Ask me about Grim Fandango.

Yay, I suggested this! I love the first two, and the latest Monkey Island games, but never got far into Curse, and never played Escape, so a lot of this LP will be new for me. Also seeing a lot of hate for Tales lately, on SA and in general, but I really enjoyed it personally. I guess I'll find out what's up with that when the time comes in the LP and people start discussing it.

I remember playing the original, I had no idea just how gorgeous the Special Editions looked though, geez! I feel like I recognize the voice actor for that pirate with the glass eye from Grim Fandango, but I can't remember which character.

I remember being excited when the special editions came out but I thought for some reason that the voice acting seemed a bit stilted but watching this I have to say that even though it does feel a little off compared to other games it works well for what the original was. That and some of the other conversations work better when there are other lines being spoken at the same time, makes the game feel a little more real

The Secret Of Monkey Island - Episode 2 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bMFE9O2SMNg In this video we meet some new friends, make some money, spend some money and poison some animals. Also it shows my failing memory. My memory isn't as good as I first thought it was. My daughter is coming to stay with me from tomorrow through to Sunday, so my next update will be on Sunday itself. I enjoyed Tales, the controls were a bit quirky at first but they were decent games. I absolutely adored Curse, it's probably the game of the series that I've played the most. I can barely remember Escape but I remember enjoying it, despite the actual gameplay. Tales I have only played through once, but it was within the last couple of years so it shouldn't go too badly.

In my personal ranking it goes Revenge>Secret>Curse>Tales>Escape. The first three are easily 'unified' of a sort in my mind as being 'true' Monkey Island games. Escape just got way, way too wacky. Tales was better, but still not as good as the first three.

This is probably why the dialogue also feels a bit stilted - it has those unnatural gaps that at times kills the flow of the dialogue. But its evidently not too consistent, as in some places the voice acting seems to flow just fine.

You're supposed to talk to the prisoner in the jail before tackling the Idol. He will tell you that he was framed with picking up the yellow flowers, which are a powerful narcotic. That's how you know that mixing them with the meat will knock out the poodles. I really hate to sound too whiny, but could you try to talk a little more? Let's plays are more interesting when you get to hear the player's commentary on the action. paradoxGentleman fucked around with this message at 18:22 on Jan 22, 2014 |

Every sick day in primary school I used to play the first two ones and Indianan Jones: Curse of Atlantis. One of the great things about these games are the easter eggs. We've already found one in the LOOM guy, there are at least two mmore that I remember before leaving Melee Island.

Ah yes, this probably the curse of playing by memory, the combination of the flowers and meat must look pretty random to anyone who hasn't played the game. Noted, I will try to add more dialogue in future.

I try to share this story every time someone does a LP of this game, so let's see how you guys handle it. So on a website called Fireball 20 something dot com there was a web comic called ROTFW. Which stands for Ruins of the fourth wall. It was mostly done by a fan girl who had a thing for Ivo Robotnik and would tear you limb from limb if you called him Eggman. Anyway this was around the year 2004 give or take. Getting to Monkey Island she made a comic where Guybrush came out of no where and said one of his famous line and she dared anyone to guess who it was. I had NO idea who it was. Remind you this game was made around 1988 or 89 and I never heard of that line at all. A small bit of time later and a handy Google search I realized that the game was Monkey Island. Thus was my search for a copy to play. After about a dozen demos I searched for a hard copy. Seeing that one was out of reach price wise I did what every PC user does when they are faced with such a problem. Hint, nudge say no more. Well after playing Monkey Island 1, 2 and Sam and Max Hit the Road I was faced with a problem. Finding the other two Monkey Island games in the same way would be tricky. Luckily, and seriously this was luck, Lucas Arts had both the third and fourth game STILL for sale in their Star Wars filled store. I know I was surprised my self. However I will admit I played most of Monkey Island 4 on the PS2 copy till it glitched out around a very tricky puzzle. Basically the worst puzzle in all of Monkey Island. That's basically the short version of my experience of Monkey Island. So, congrats to web comics. Now if only Steam/GoG release Hit the Road for me to buy.

And if you alter the speed of that, the gaps can all but disappear. It's not perfect, but it works well enough most of the time.

If this is the Escape sword-fighting bug\talk\whatever then I've only gotten past it once. For that I will seek a walkthrough and hope to find a more updated version over which I have previously encountered. The fact I completed Escape only one time is probably down to sheer luck more than anything else, each attempt afterwards has been thwarted at that one moment, with no hints on how to circumvent it. The only game in the series which has given me concern is Escape, it won't stop me and I will edit if I have too.Sandata posted:I try to share this story every time someone does a LP of this game, so let's see how you guys handle it. I handle it just fine, it doesn't matter how you get into something, as long as you find worth and enjoyment in it. Sam & Max are pencilled in for the future. I still have my Hit The Road CD:Rom and have enjoyed the Tell-Tale releases, it's a possibility for the future.

If it is what I think it is, then yeah, its one of those puzzles which has the worst disconnect between the puzzle and what you use to solve it.

To be clear my PS2 copy glitched as in frozen on a puzzle involving rocks and time. It's about the only bad copy of a game I got from GameStop ever. My PC copy never gave my any serious glitches. The listing for the games to me are three, four, two and one. One had the funnest bit which we just say behind the Idol wall but two just lasts so much longer and the puzzles are wonderful. Three and four win out on the fact that they had voices at all. I never grew up properly on OLD PC games. I first played King Quest 5 and never got out the town or desert area. Other than that it was basic Secret Agent, Doom, Wolf3d.exe, Animal Racers, Hugo III Jungle, and a few odds and ends. I was never a heavy PC game at all really.

Yeah that one gets annoyingly tricky, though my PC version has glitched in other places, mostly automated stuff that never... finishes, even if the game otherwise runs fine. So fair warning then to Rocket - save often. ...When you get there. God I'm really hoping this LP gets there.
