As far as 'learning the game and getting a few kills' is concerned, rocket jumping isn't really that high of a priority. You can just kind of walk around shooting dudes with your rocket launcher and shotgun and do pretty well.

Honestly, just playing through jump_beef helped my soldier game so well it's scary. I suddenly understand how to launch my self across maps and it's great.

You don't even really need to learn how to do anything particularly fancy with rocket jumping, which I think a lot of folks assume you HAVE to do in order to be competent at Soldier in any capacity. As long as you can figure out how to launch yourself in the direction you want most of the time, and can air strafe, that should be good enough. But I think a lot of folks see those jump videos with crazy rollouts and assume that, if you can't do that, you shouldn't even bother with the class, so they get discouraged and go back to Sniper I guess. I believe that, more important than "trick jumps" or whatever, is knowing where to jump on the map to get height advantage, to get through certain paths quicker, to get to medkits/ammo crates faster, and to dive bomb Medics. If you're not playing competitively (and in some occasions even then) you can get away with your rollout being "whip teammates".

nerdbot posted:I kind of detest the whole "Pybro" idea because it gets frustrating to see Engineers who rely on the existence of a nanny to survive, and it's even worse to see Pyros just sitting in front of a dispenser in the middle of nowhere holding down M1, but at the end of the day it's still Team Fortress and helping is always better than not helping. Sometimes you see a Spy who's really good outclassing an Engineer who's trying their best but just can't deal and you wanna give em what-for. I like being a Pyro Friend whenever I'm playing with my buddy because he enjoys going Engineer and being able to wander around a little. Degreaser/Reserve Shooter/Homewrecker is a fun loadout because I like to patrol the area a little instead of just camping the dispenser. Reserve Shooter lets me take care of anything that's not a heavy relatively easily, and the Homewrecker is just in case a spy does manage to sap the sentry.

I've been thinking that with Valve retooling useless old items into new and interesting items, they should take the opportunity to completely rework the Dalokov's Bar into a Primary replacement that, when eaten, gives you buffs to your shotgun. Something like faster reload speed or tighter spread. One idea I had for a Shotgun-Heavy orientated buff would be minicrits on headshot. I mean, if the Demoman can replace his weapons to become a completely different kind of subclass, I don't see why they can't go in that direction for the Heavy.

Next time you play MvM, consider giving demoknight a try. It's actually surprisingly effective once you're upgraded. You can get a charge once every ~2 seconds, 4 seconds of crits after every kill and are able to swing your melee so fast that you can often pretty easily out damage everyone else on the map. It takes a bit of money to actually get up to being that effective but you can just roll the grenade launcher for a couple of waves and then swap out to the booties when you've got enough credits.

I've taken to using the needlegun after having used the crossbow for ages, so I'm having to retrain myself to hit with the needlegun. I know I need to lead to account for their movement and needle travel time, but which direction do I need to compensate in to cover the effect of their latency and my latency? i.e. do increase the lead distance or decrease it?

I'd love to see him get some big powerful revolvers or just borrow the snipers smgs for primary. Or just a second shotgun for less reload times! He can fill a rage bar and use both at once.

It's really annoying how useless the shotgun is for a regular Heavy. "Here's a gun that is a worse version of your main gun except you don't slow down" vs "You can heal yourself to full at any time". I can't even remember the last time I ran out of ammo with a regular minigun since you're always wading through dead players, and you can GRU-sprint over to an ammo pack anyways.

"Here's a gun that is a worse version of your main gun except you don't slow down" vs "You can heal yourself to full at any time". Originally (as in, the days before teleporters could be upgraded) the shotgun was super important for defense when running to the front lines. If a threat showed up it was the fastest way to inflict some damage. But now that there's the GRU and fast teleporters it's become less important. Spies don't seem to make their living lurking around near spawn areas like they did once upon a time either.
