The Iron Rose posted:Well, that's not true. The U.S. enforces international law (see: operations Uphold Democracy (lol) and Deny Flight). Naturally, they don't have huge motivation to piss off one of their major allies, which means you're not going to see the Seventh Fleet roll up on Australia's coast anytime soon. Isn't international law beautiful! Hypocrisy? It's not like we don't have a concentration camp for foreign nationals. At least we pretend the people at Guantanamo are terrorists I guess.

The current government stopped posting statistics, so here is the last availble set. Notice that, amazingly you are twice as likely to be granted a visa if you come by boat? Why's that? Because they are loving refugees. In regards to international law, following the Refugee Convention we recognise refugees. quote:...Australia has protection obligations to individuals. Consistent with that assumption, the text and structure of the [Migration] Act proceed on the footing that the [Migration] Act provides power to respond to Australia’s international obligations by granting a protection visa in an appropriate case and by not returning that person, directly or indirectly, to a country where he or she has a well-founded fear of persecution for a Convention reason.[16] That also covers refoulment. So what's the point of this comic? If you travel to Australia via boat, you're probably a refugee. But you know what, but if you're not? YOU BETTER WATCH OUT.

If only it was just Guantanamo. ICE is every bit as bad, through the US prison system, for migrants as the Australian camps. Hell, ICE can even do it to green card holders and not just people trying to enter through improper means.

To be complete, the last reference to 'kiko' was never, and the last reference to 'mari' was a strip titled 'mammaries.'

Since I was just looking at the archives, I can say that there was a strip in September of last year in which Sam called her horny Japanese mom to get the kids sent home, they came back sometime in (or before) mid-November, and they've been in like four strips at most since then.

If your reaction to a comic like that is "Well look at this loving hand, you guys" and it's not preceded by twelve or so instances of "Oh Christ why is this a thing" then please, step away from the thread. Step away from the cynicism and depression, try to experience hope, and joy, and all those other good things. Or at least pretend.

This is because most women feel that politicians' wives should be encouraged to show as much skin as possible. Muir demonstrates his deft hand at crafting dialogue for female characters yet again. Hey, $12k is a yearly salary for some cartoonists.

Let me just reassure anyone who is just joining us that, yes, the last steady job that Zed held down was one that was predicated entirely on his wife being able to tell him how to do it over the phone: (And Muir did indeed depict his cartoon counterpart constantly on the phone with his waifu while on the job.)

Ed: Hell, it's not the most horrifying contemporary thing by far.

Livingtrope posted:Thank you for psychoanalyzing me TheDarkFlame, you definitely know what you're talking about and aren't an idiot Hey, I'm sorry, I wasn't being serious, I know that wasn't your first reaction. I just liked the way you pointed out the artist's mistakes instead of addressing the comic's awful point, and this thread's tendency to throw these sorts of idiotic flaws back at a comic, like Ramirez's classic call to raise taxes. I'm also saying in a slightly dumb way that even though this sort of thing is pretty horrible, with a government flat-out admitting their hatred to the point of actually advertising it, people do get jaded to the point where this sort of thing doesn't surprise them. But it shouldn't just be background unpleasantness, it's slightly different than your typical Ramirez or Asay comic, because of both its subject matter and that it was explicitly supported by the Australian government, which I think kind of makes it a bigger deal than some fuckwit's awful opinions that he is paid to have. It's like the difference between what Jeremy Clarkson says and what David Cameron says. One is a dick who gets paid to be a dick, and one is expected to be representing a nation, and history books probably won't teach future generations about how much of a dick Jeremy Clarkson was. And yes, you're right, I'm an idiot, and it was clumsy and stupid. I'm sorry.

Actually one of the long-ago premises of the Day by Day living situation is that Sam earns money for the house by doing freelance engineering work from home, but I think that's another of the things that Muir at best only vaguely remembers. Zed's primary contribution to the household is sitting on his rear end drinking beer all day -- I was going to say he's the gun-toting protector, but the strip has made clear that Sam is strapped all the time too (with sexy thigh holsters).

This put a genuine smile on my face. And this wiped that smile right the gently caress off. There's a lot to complain about here, but for some reason the thing that bothers me the most is that Texas isn't electing a new governor until November 14th. Did he really think this joke was so good he had to tell it ten months early?
