This was a pretty freak occurrence actually. Usually I only see a couple of light wounds or something along those lines. One of the injuries come out of a random event as well (the torpedo servicing incident).

Spaced God was standing on the deck as Lichtenstein approached the ship: the Chief Engineer had made a full recovery, just in time to join the crew on its new patrol. Lichtenstein, meanwhile, had requested a new ship so that they could finally use a VIIC, but BdU had denied the request, claiming that Lichtenstein's crew knew U-47 better than anyone else. It had been three long months before the u-boat was finally ready to hit the water again.

On the ground, things had gone badly for the Italians in Greece and for the Luftwaffe in the Battle of Britain: it was likely that the fabled Operation Sealion would now never happen. Also, there were reports of U-boats being spotted during night surface attacks: some said that british radar technology was being used to allow aircraft to spot the u-boats even at night.

U-47's patrol area would this time be in the middle of the Atlantic. The days were dark and cold and the crew would not enjoy spending hours on watch duty in the middle of the freezing cold Atlantic ocean, but it needed to be done.

The transit to the patrol zone was uneventful, but an unexpected sight greeted U-47 as it started its patrol route: from the conning tower, ManfredTheGreat had reported a large freighter on the horizon, the 9.2k ton Lochavon. Approaching at close range in the middle of the day, Lichtestein let loose with his 8.8 cm cannon, firing 50 rounds at the freighter.

Unfortunately, the ship was only lightly damaged by the cannon fire. Not wanting to hang around for long incase there were enemy escorts nearby, Lichtenstein elected to fire two torpedoes to break the freighter's back. One missed, while the other hit the ship near the fore of the freighter, quickly driving water into the bulkheads. Within 20 minutes, the freighter had sunk.

After a few more days of patrolling, another U-boat, U-84, reported the presence of a convoy in the vicinity. Calculating the intercept, Lichtenstein was happy to find that he would be able to intercept it and get into attack position. Ordering engines to flank speed, U-47 was on its way. Still day by the time that U-47 intercepted, Lichtestein elected to attack at medium range. Pierzak called out the targets: the 7.5k tanker Sagona, the 7k ton Rothesay Castle, the 1.3k ton Erato and the 7k ton tanker Cairndale. Lichtestein elected to fire two torpedoes at each of the tankers.

Of the two torpedoes fired at the Sagona, one missed while the other hit the tanker amidship, wounding it but not bringing it down. As for the Cairndale, both torpedoes hit and exploded, bringing the tanker down in less than 10 minutes, such was the speed that the tanker was taking in water.

The expected escorts were nowhere to be seen: it seemed that U-47 had managed to hit the tankers without even being hunted. The Sagona, heavily damaged, was soon forced to leave the convoy altogether, and no escorts detached in order to protect it. It would be easy prey. Waiting until night, Lichtenstein approached close and attacked the wounded tanker with his deck gun: accurate fire on the waterline soon doomed the Sagona to a watery grave.

After a few days of patrolling, BdU reported that the same convoy as before had changed course, attempting to head back to England and heading roughly towards the patrol area of U-47 once again. Again, the u-boat was ordered to intercept.

Arriving at night, Lichtestein spotted four potential targets: the 8.5k ton Nottingham, the 9.5k ton Vancouver Island, the 1.3k ton Erato once again and the 6.3k ton tanker Barbro. Aiming at the two larger ships at medium range, Lichtenstein calculated the firing solution using the UZO for a night surface attack and fired one G7a and one G7e at each ship.

All four torpedoes hit and exploded and soon both the Nottingham and the Vancouver Island were slowly sinking into the water.

Unfortunately, this time the escorts were on the ball and as soon as U-47 dived, a corvette was already on top of it, engines churning. The hydrophone operator announced that depth charges were in the water, The only thing that the crew heard was a thunk on top on the upper deck: the depth charge had landed on the ship itself: the huge explosion that followed tore the ship in two, immediately filling both sides with water and sending them towards the deep, dark bottom of the Atlantic. No crew member survived.

In combat, you first roll to be detected, then you roll to see how many hits you have (rolling 2d6 for both). Higher rolls on the second chart score you a higher number of hits, up to 5. If you ever get a roll of 13+ (only possible after modifiers), you insta-die. We rolled a 12. We had a +1 from the night surface attack. Welp. U-47, you were a good ship. This also means that gradenko_2000 is still our goon ace and that no one yet has survived entry into 1941!

If there was one thing that KptLt TheMcD wanted to do was to bring back his crew safe and sound. Many of the other u-boat Komandants had started pre-emptive tonnage races, but TheMcD knew that the main aim was to get back home alive (and maybe sink some ships). With the help of his officers, LtzS Loxbourne and GruntyThrst as Watch Officer, OfzS Aesclepia as the Chief Engineer and GenericRX as the doctor, TheMcD felt he could. As he approached his ship, U-50, he looked at the emblem of his mighty ship.

"That...that looks like the sort of thing that would say 'Kill me now!' if it was actually alive. Who drew that, a child?"

"Well, Herr Kaleun, you aren't too far off from the truth..."

The first mission for U-50 would be to plant mines on the Firth of Forth: this would undoubtedly help to hinder Allied shipping. As U-50 set out from Kiel, a brass band was ready to see them off, as many citizens watched them ship out for the first time. Many men also got to see the Kiel Canal for the very first time.

The trip to the mission area was uneventful. Waiting until night before getting close, U-50 was able to deploy the mines without much trouble either. So far, everything seemed to be going well and finally the tubes were clear for their intended weapons, torpedoes.

As U-50 continued on it's patrol down the eastern coast of England, many days passed without a single contact. Finally LtzS Loxbourne spotted something on the horizon: the 7.2k ton freighter William Hooper. TheMcD ordered the 88 to be manned and soon shells were landing on and close to the freighter. The freighter was damaged, but not enough to sink, so TheMcD fired a single torpedo from the forward tubes, wanting to economise on the torpedoes since they could be valuable later. The torpedo missed completely, unfortunately: the firing solution had been too hasty.

Coming around for another pass, TheMcD ordered the cannon to be fired yet again. The concentrated fire was now enough to sink the freighter, as the men cheered the very first kill of their naval careers.

The patrol continued and U-50 was soon reaching the point of no return. In the last few hours before it needed to turn back, GruntyThrst finally spotted another freighter on the horizon: the 3.3k ton Annavore.

Again ordering the 88 manned, TheMcD ordered 50 round on target: these again proved to not be enough. Once again, a single torpedo was fired: the torpedo went wide. Something would have to be done to improve torpedo marksmanship, it seemed. Ordering the 8.8 to finish the ship, the crew seemed not to be able to hit the broadside of a barn as most of the shots missed even though the sea was not choppy. Not wanting to let the ship escape, TheMcD finally ordered two torpedoes to be fired: one missed completely and the other proved to be a dud.

Ordering the last remaining artillery ammo to be fired, the Annavore was finally brought down.

On their way back to port, while placing one of the G7e's into the tube, one of the supports suddenly failed, leaving one of the crewmembers maimed: it almost was starting to seem like U-50 was a cursed ship. Doctor GenericRX was immediately on the case.

Fortunately, there weren't any other mishaps on the journey and soon the German coast was finally visible. Hopefully the next patrol would go much smoother than the first.

A couple of months of rest had done the crew well: the Kaleun had mostly spent them complaining to ordnance about his stock of faulty torpedoes, most of which had failed to explode at all during their first patrol. The response had mostly been platitudes. Hopefully the next batch of torpedoes would do their intended job.

This time, U-50 would be tasked to patrol north of the Hebrides: this would involve travelling close to the Orkneys. This, unlike the first patrol, would be a straightforward war patrol rather than a mine-laying mission like the last time and thus U-50 would be able to keep its full complement of torpedoes.

The journey through the Kiel Canal and up through the North Sea was uneventful and nothing of note was spotted, but near the Orkney's, 1WO Loxbourne finally reported a sighting: the 10k ton freighter Yorkshire.

Quickly ordering the crew to the 8.8 cm cannon, TheMcD ordered 50 rounds on target while he prepared the torpedo calculations. The cannon only did light damage, but by that time the calculations were complete and TheMcD fired two torpedoes on target. Both torpedoes hit and exploded and soon the large freighter was breaking in half, sinking in the cold november water of the North Sea.

After passing the Orkneys using a northern route, a report from BdU was reached: slightly north of U-50s position, a convoy had been spotted and U-50 was ordered to attack as soon as possible. Setting the engines at flank speed, TheMcD followed the command.

It was night by the time that U-50 reached the convoy. LtzS GruntyThrst reported four targets: the 6.9k ton Empire Comet, the 5k ton freighter Kumasian, the 8.1k ton tanker Beduin and the 6.7k ton freighter Treverbyn. TheMcD decided to fire two torpedoes at the Beduin and two at the Empire Comet. Once the calculations had been made, the order was given to fire and soon the torpedoes were on the way. Of all four torpedoes, two missed, one was a dud and the last one, aimed at the Beduin, hit just below the keel, breaking the back of the tanker and quickly making it sink.

Fortunately, U-50 was able to submerge without being spotted and the escorts did not manage to locate the submarine at all, allowing it to escape uncontested. Coming around again to manoeuvre for another attack on the convoy, TheMcD was in position as the sun rose in the sky, but since he had G7a's loaded, he decided to wait until night. Fortunately, U-50 was able to keep the distance until the day ended and soon TheMcD was again in position to attack. This time, Loxbourne reported the targets: the 7.2k ton freighter City of Mandalay, the 7.2k ton freighter Manaar, the 6.5k ton tanker Tahchee and the 4.4k ton freighter Nicolas Pateras.

TheMcD this time elected to fire two torpedoes at each of the 7.2k ton freighters. After inputting the data and creating the firing solution, TheMcD shouted 'Loss' and the torpedoes were on the way. Only one of the torpedoes aimed at each ship hit, causing moderate damage on the City of Mandalay and light damage on the Manaar.

Yet again, TheMcD was able to evade detection, but this time, the torpedo reserves were running low, with only two G7e's available. Fortunately, as U-50 stalked its wounded preys, they dropped from the convoy due to their damage, the escorts decided to keep track with the convoy rather than protecting them. TheMcD, seeing the City of Mandalay as the easier target, decided to wait until the convoy was well away, and then approached the freighter on the surface, 8.8 cm cannon blasting away. The freighter could not last long and soon it was slipping underneath the water.

The rest of the patrol was uneventful: even though U-50 managed to reach it's intended patrol zone, no targets could be spotted and soon the submarine was forced to head back home. As the ship rounded the north of the Orkneys as it had done previously, however, Loxbourne suddenly shouted 'ALARM!' from the bridge. An RAF plane had been spotted!

Fortunately, U-50 was able to dive before the airplane could launch its bombs. It had been close, however. The rest of the journey met no adversity and soon the german shore and home could be sighted again.
