Here is an article from The Score that makes things sounds really dire:

quote:

"Critical condition can have varying meanings from hospital to hospital," Jo Innes, an emergency room doctor who writes about hockey player medical issues for The Score, said in a text message. "But according to the American Hospital Association, vital signs are abnormal and unstable, the person may be unconscious, and indicators are unfavourable, often resulting in death."
"Critical to me means he's in the ICU, he's probably on the vent, and he's not conscious."
Innes provided the information found in the rest of this post. She also suggested that Switzerland has "a poor measles vaccine compliance" and that may extend to meningitis.

Unofficially according to a source he's critical but stable and should recover (not sure about any long-term side effects, but in terms of immediate imminent death)

Kootenay Ice, Moose Jaw Warriors, and Saskatoon Blades all apparently put on the don't-get-meningitis preventative drugs also.

Anyway Calgary, Islanders(x2!), Washington, Dallas, Pittsburgh, Phoenix, Ottawa fans, went to a Regina Pats- Edmonton Oil Kings game last night. Your team has a draft pick playing. Oils won 5-2. Game was even and it was 3-2 midway through the second when Regina's shiny new trade goalie got grenaded into the red pipe and didn't move for a couple minutes. He would have been stretchered I swear if he had been 27 and had a $4 million contract. It kinda unravelled after that.

For the Pats:

Flames: You have one (1) Morgan Klimchuk (1st round, '13)

The Valeri of Jordan Eberle's Pavel. He is a volume scorer, like I would say with Eberle while at Regina. And I don't really think Eberle is all he is/was made out to be. Klimchuk himself has really good acceleration, maybe not the fastest player overall though. He did have a few dangerous chances but doesn't always know when to dish the biscuit around and when to hold on to it a little longer. He did hustle, but not consistently and definitely not in all three zones. Whatever, if he develops a work ethic and learns a little about "placement" and "timing" before developing CTE he looks like 25 goals or something, but they will be an angry, frustrating 25 goals for you.
Bullshit score I just made up: C- because he doesn't deserve a D, but he's never gonna be as good as some people want him to be. Bad Porn, or whatever - sure there's penetration and scoring, but do you really like what you see?
0-0-0 and a -2

Isles: You have William S. Kyle Burroughs (7th round, '13)
I dunno. I had 6 skaters for the Pats I thought had a notably good game. He wasn't one of them. He didn't really stand out and I didn't know he was NHL property till I stole the info. package that the Pats provide that always gets left on the scouts' table after the game. The Pats have an average power play (19%) and a laughably bad pk (73%) and he is on both. The power play went oh fer and the pk gave up 2 I think (and an EN SH). So not a good night for him.

Bullshit score I just made up: He gets the most :effort: C for being invisible

0-1-1 were his only marks

Caps: Chandler "ph" Stephenson(3rd round, '12)

I loved this guy so, so much. Awesome awareness and positioning, skated hard to the very end of the game, made a lot of excellent plays with and without the puck and was physical. He is 5'11 and 200 lbs. He seems destined to be a 3rd line grinder once he starts playing consistently against men who work as hard as he does. He is having a really stellar year 29-52-81 in 64 games, though he is turning 20 in April, so "old kid in juniors" is a definite risk. If his hands stay caught up to his mental game he could have some potential, that 20-30 mark again, but the rest of his game will make you happy no matter what (KLIMCHUK). I will be cheering for him.

Bullshit score I just made up: A+

Stars: Dmitry "hosed off to North America" Sinitsyn (7th, '12)

OHMYGOD This guy has next enigmatic star Russian dman written all over him. He was everywhere. He was nowhere. What he is is an old CHL "rookie" Moscow born who hosed off to College originally then hosed off to the coldest winter REGINA loving SASKATCHEWAN has had as long as I have been here. He had huge hits he connected and missed on. Smooth, strong skater. Big time slapper. The only point shot in the game I was impressed by. He also made way too many lolololol moves and doesn't know when to say enough is enough. Apparently he is first round talent but his stock fell super hard due to visa issues. Well Dallas, he's baby Zubov. I really like him, so long as he stops doing all the stupid things Junior defencemen do.

Bullshit score I just made up: B-, because it is the average of A+ and D, or whatever.

Otherwise, Dyson "v" Stevenson had a really good game, as did Dryden Hunt. Hunt is draft eligible this year. Later rounds, if he's lucky. Stevenson is 21 lol. So yea, he will end up an accountant or something whenever he's done with riding ECHL/AHL bus routes. Our goalie Wapple was doing awesome (and is this year for us) before his spine got snapped against the post. He was draft eligible last year but he sports a pretty good SV% and I liked him - he's feisty, and had a good glove hand.

Pittsburgh: Goalie Tristan Jarry (44th overall, '13). Having a good year. Had a good game. There was about 5 minutes in the 3rd where the Pats looked like they wanted to come back and he made 3 or 4 good saves.

Islanders: '12 4th overall pick dman Griffin Reinhart. Yea he was good. I kept noticing him loving with our forwards pretty effectively. Didn't lug the puck a whole bunch, so he didn't stand out offensively, though apparently he finished +3.

Phoenix: '12 27th overall pick Henrik Samuelsson. Regina shut his line down. It was the second line and PP that powered this game for Edmonton. Didn't realize he was supposed to be really good till the 3rd period. I unno.

Ottawa '13 17th overall pick Curtis Lazar. He was buzzing. Got first star. Got a goal and 3 points. Looked really good offensively.

Edgars Kulda (undrafted, '12 eligible) looked pretty good (2 goals). This is only his second season over here, so who knows about him.

There are whispers elite 2015 prospect Jack Eichel may consider not going to BU if he could play head-to-head in OHL vs. Connor McDavid.

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie 1h
But Eichel currently obliged to play in QMJHL if he goes jr instead of college. Halifax originally owned his rights, now it's Saint John.

Bob McKenzie ‏@TSNBobMcKenzie 1h
Only way to go from Q to O is to be waived by all Q teams, then claimed on waivers by OHL team. Hard to see it but if CHL wants a player...

Anyway, real story I suppose is, based on whispers out there, young American Eichel may like idea of challenging McDavid head to head.

Tonight I worked one of the craziest, worst officiated games I have ever seen. In any league.

Lake Erie Monsters vs Toronto Marlies

200 combined PIM. The game ended at 10:24pm, but didn't officially end until 11:04pm.

Highlights include:

Fight off the opening face-off.
Incorrectly announced penalties due to the ref not coming to speak with scoreboard operator and penalty timekeeper during 2nd half of game to confirm penalties.
A fight breaking out after a puck was shot at a TOR goalie after an offsides.
A TOR player running a LEM player after TOR goalie's froze the puck, 8 seconds after the whistle. That TOR player getting a 2 min Roughing penalty, but sent to the locker room. No other penalty was called.
TOR player fighting a LEM player who was on the ice, while that TOR player was on the bench. No penalty assessed to TOR player.
Coach being assessed a Game Misconduct once the game ended.

The staff stayed 40 minutes after the game relaying messages from the refs to the official scorer, and confirming penalties.

Unrelated to the penalties, Kenny Ryan on the Marlies took one of the worst nutshots I have ever seen killing a penalty in the 3rd period. He sprawled out on his side, legs together (old school shot blocking style) to block a slapshot. He got it square in the nards.

This one is kicking up a lot of debate- people not knowing (nor, for that matter, I did not know this either)- National rules for high-school hockey do not allow for shootouts in playoff/championship games. Some folks are also questioning the decision to end it- apparently the St. Ignatius players came out for the 11th (!) period, and were ready to go, and the Northview players did not leave their dressing room, and then the decision was made to end the game.

Northview hung on though- outshot 78-32 for the game.

This is what the State Athletic Association had to say:

quote:

By mutual agreement of the head coaches, school administrators and OHSAA administrators, today’s ice hockey state championship game at Nationwide Arena was ended after seven overtime periods. The game shall be recorded as a 1-1 tie and Sylvania Northview and Cleveland St. Ignatius shall be declared co-state champions.

After the seventh overtime, the head coaches, school athletic administrators and OHSAA administrators had a lengthy discussion. Many players on both teams were seriously fatigued and neither coach or school administrator objected to ending the game before the eighth overtime began.

By national rule, there is no shootout procedure in high school hockey.

While the decision is being questioned by fans, the OHSAA commends the coaches and school athletic administrators in reaching this decision together without conflict. This is an opportunity to show that wins and losses, even in a state championship game, are not more important than player safety. Had a player been seriously injured in the eighth overtime due to fatigue, the decision to allow the game to continue would have been seriously questioned more than the decision to end it.

For as much as I loathe the shootout in professional hockey, this might be a case of it being worthwhile to consider, because asking 14 to 18 year olds to go 7 overtimes is possibly a little excessive.

Yeah, I was there for it, and it SUCKED. Truth be told, the Sens didn't even deserve the loser point for getting it to a shootout, they totally went off the gas after Ericcson got yanked, and they got burned, big time. Nathan Lawson was tearing things up during the first half of the season, and then he got hurt, and then he got sick, and since then he is just nowhere near the goalie he was prior. You would think that a team would realize that if they can score 3 goals in a span of about 95 seconds, that good things can happen when you put the puck on net. Instead it's a lot of cutesy crap, extra passes, and more than a little bit of trying to force things into J-G Pageau when he was on the ice so he could get his hat trick. There are very few games where I've left feeling as disgusted as I felt when I was leaving tonight.

I know the Northview coach and I've called a bunch of their local games. Everyone was out of gas and honestly, it's only high school hockey. Within a week, these guys are going to be much more worried about dates for the dance and their upcoming exams. Most Ohio state championships are either comfortable wins or blowouts one way or the other and this was pretty clearly an abnormality. The St. Igs coach said his guys weren't wild about it but that he'd give them some pizza, and put "Slapshot" on the bus TVs for the ride home and they'd cool off.
