I don't mind the Albatros D.Va but pretty much everything is faster than you so you so basically you end up fighting planes which come to you. I'm going to give the PWCG a go too, I'm still going to fly as Jasta 11.

Albatroses are supremly mediocore in my experince. They are easy and forgiving to fly but that lack any kind of speciality, so you always end up fighting planes who can do something better than you. Bit like the Yaks in war thunder.

I guess my biggest issue with the Albatros is that the first hit always seems to kill the engine.

I'm doing OK in the Dr.I after watching that video about how to turn it without spinning all over the place. poo poo can run away from me pretty easy though.

I really really like the SE.5. I cheated the controller curves a bit and now it's a stable, steady plane that I constantly score kills in. My new career in it has 3 plane kills and 2 balloons. I've also crashed or "landed" not on the airfield in 4 out of the 6 sorties I've flown. Once because my prop got shot away (landed just on my own side of the front), once because my port side outer strut snapped and left my port bottom wing kind of fluttering (landed in a field and flipped over), and twice just because I'm poo poo. I did manage a perfect landing on the airfield after a piece of shattered Halberstadt ripped my starboard elevator off, and that felt awesome but it was a total bitch not flipping over at slow speeds.

e: what pack unlocks the field mods for stuff like the Camel, Dr.I, and SE.5? I want a loving gunsight.

I am really over shooting at two seaters in the Albatros, It's tedious as hell and the engine always dies. I'd rather face an endless swarm of Camels, at least I'd have a chance.

Cruisin' on patrol off the coast of France or Germany or Belgium or someplace.

Found a friendly British supply convoy on the move East.

Friendly ship escort was ahead of em, clearing the way. Two light cruisers, pretty well armed.

Wait a second... WHO THE...

AWWWW poo poo, Kraut sub on the move!

He apparently was just shadowing them and following their course. The sub eventually blew its "AWOOOOOOGA! AWOOOOOGA!" horns, and dived a bit deeper before breaking off and heading the opposite direction. I assume it had sighted me. Hopefully I'll get to bomb one next time, but this one got away.

Anyone here using the RoF Refined mod by the way? Using it at the minute... the effects are pretty drat noticeable regarding plane structural integrity and gun RoF especially.

Yeah, well Richtofen's boys are doing a bit better in my PWCG game. Got an intercept, 4 of us went up to hunt down some Halberstadts, we bounce them and I send one down in flames surprisingly quick*. Started chasing another one and eventually took him down after expending all my vickers ammo and 3 lewis gun magazines between the two. Halberstadts are tough bastards. Gunners seem lousy though.

Turned back to the trenches and find my squad still attacking another Halb, suddenly I see 3 enemies coming in from the side. A Pfalz and two Alb D.Vs in Jasta 10 colors. Firing a red flare to alert my squad (I have no idea if that worked), I turn to face them along with two members of my flight (4th seemed tunnelvisioned). We make an initial pass and I swing around and see the Pfalz of the group glance off one of the Albatros, breaking a wing off. With the Pfalz spiraling down I get on the tail of the Albatros he hit, who looks to be retreating. I get in close, he seems undamaged, sight him in and FIRE! Ra-ta-ta-Click, poo poo jam! Clear it, Fire! Click... out of ammo? I swore I only used three lewis magazines! So I pulled out my 1911 and gave him a few .45 slugs before turning back. Thankfully he kept retreating instead of turning onto my tail.

Going back I spotted the rest of my flight, Captain Thomas was being tailed by the last Albatros while the other two struggled to get a bead on it. Despite being out of ammo I fly in and try to land a few pistol shots on the Albatros, maybe that'd at least shake him off the Captain. Sadly it was not to be. I soon notice the Captain is leaking fuel, I make an aggressive close-range pass on the Alb, nearly collided from behind and by the time I look around, the Captain is going down streaming lots of black smoke and the Albatros is on me now! He scores a hit injuring me before I roll, dive, and run away, too fast for him to keep up. I'm sorry Captain Thomas, if only I'd been better with ammo conservation. :smith:

Those Jasta 10 bastards really seemed to have it out for the Captain, they all latched onto his tail, which is why the Pfalz and first Albatros glanced eachother.

Another 2 kills (I'm up to 6, 4 more for Ace Status*!) and another 2 months in hospital. :sigh:

Yes yes, I flamed a couple of huns. Shut up with the "sizzle wonk, sizzle" Mannock, you weren't even there you rear end in a top hat. The same thing happened to Captain Thomas right after, you laughing about that?

I ended up scrubbing that mission and we did a patrol over the frontlines. I broke away from my Jasta 11 wingman and shot down a squad of 3 Brit Nieuport 17s and a RE8's single handedly. I was damaged and wounded by a 5th plane after a RE8 chased us back to the aerodrome but I landed safely. 3 missions with 5 kills, I'm pretty smug about that, certainly am living up the Jasta 11 reputation. I also have the Gold Military Merit Cross, which seems to be the NCO and enlisted version of the Blue Max.

Anyone using PointTracker plugin for facetrack and having an issue looking up?

It seems that about 70-75* pitch up it snaps over so you are looking 70-75*, but 180* off in yaw. Basically I can't look straight up and this is driving me insane.

I can limit it so it doesn't do the snapping thing, but then I still can't look up of course.

Edit: Doesn't look like an issue with my camera or LEDs

Stopped at ~88 and I can see what I posted earlier, set to >90 and it snaps over. Is this a limit of the game itself? I can't find much on the topic.

Would be really weird if they wouldn't let you look straight up.

Superedit: It's apparently an issue with FaceTrackNoIR.

Seek not greatness, but instead truth, and you shall find both.
Debris coming off aircraft can damage your plane if it hits you. I learned this the hard way after clipping the wing off a RFC Bomber.

I was like "gently caress YEAH!!! I GOT A...OH poo poo!"
Cue my propeller breaking off, oil all over my goggles, and me having to do a crash landing. At least I didn't get captured in my campaign.

edit: If you have the steam version, can you buy the pilot accessories pack on the website, or is there a DLC for that?

Nope. The 2 stores are totally separate fir ~*reasons*~ The ace pack dlc on steam has all that stuff, and all the field and weapons mods for the planes that come with channel battles.

To be honest, I snapped up Rise of Flight from the Indie Gala deal without actually looking up how much it actually costs, because the value of donation for the bundle seemed like a good deal regardless of whatever the original cost of the game was. I have since looked up the actual price of Rise of Flight and its associated DLC on steam.

:stare:

What kind of people think a pricing scheme like that is a good idea? If each of the DLC bits was a fifth the price of what they are right now I'd probably end up buying most of them over time, but at their current price I don't even want to buy one of them. What in the hell is with these prices?

I've lost the first of my historical aces in jasta 2. Max Muller dead on the 5th of september 1916 with 1 victory. We finally encountered enemy fighters and they were out in very impressive force with at least 7 nieuports escorting a lot of fe2s.

Luckily we had a large amount of height on them and I managed to shoot one nieuport up beautifully in my initial bounce. After that it was total chaos. I survived and got an fe2 by energy fighting but I have no idea how most of my wingmen survived, the boost they get from being part of an ace status squadron really seems to pay off. At one point I momentarily saw an fe2 going down in a dozen pieces, at the time I thought collision but laurenz heidkruger was credited with a kill so maybe it was his work. Or maybe he shot it and then max muller collided with it.

The situation looked much worse to me than it apparently actually was and after a couple minutes I fired the retreat flare and was very surprised to see a few of my wingmen appear. Given our amazingly intact state I decided to turn back into the fight but it ended on a relatively relaxing note as I followed a nieuport who decided now was a good time to go for the world altitude record and was circling upwards endlessly. I ended his ambitions by shooting off his right aileron before finishing him off.

I miss my sopwiths but jasta 2 has been great fun so far. Also, I banged my wing on landing after surviving all this. There was a crosswind, I swear.

So are you playing as a flight leader? When you say you're firing flares, you just mean using the squadron commands, right? (which seem to shoot a free flare) Is that a Halberstadt D.II? How is it?

Adrian Owlsley

I'm playing as a flight commander so I'm the leader unless the squadron commander is on the mission, I think that leads to a pretty nice variety. Also I do just mean the commands, it would be really cool to fire the flares manually but I don't think people react to them unless you do it via the commands menu. What I would really like is to assign the meaning of each color of flare, maybe modders will figure it out someday. As for the halberstadt d.II it seems decent, it's pretty maneuverable and not too tricky but I'm really looking forward to getting a more powerful engine.

Flight sims and wargames have really terrible price schemes because developers/publishers are stubborn and figure since it's a niche game that they have to charge large amounts of money. Plus the people that usually play them have a lot of disposable income and don't complain about it, or even see it as a badge of honor to pay large amounts of money for their hobby.

It's really stupid, but Rise of Flight is one of the handful of groups that has jumped to Steam so maybe hopefully sometime down the line they will wise up and lower their prices a bit to get more sales.

Yeah, kind of. It also just does things differently from the stock career. Its less scripted in a "give assignments to every unit without really checking if it coincidentally lines up with anyone else, if people meet up, cool, fight it out" way. So far I've noticed much more varied assignments, varying altitudes to friendly and enemy aircraft and other things. It also actually tracks aces as actual pilots you can fight alongside or against. If you download the official skinpacks and Pat Wilson's skinpacks, planes will even use appropriate unit markings.

I've flown 4 sorties of a SE5a late 1917/early 1918 career so far and I've been making use of the journal/narrative feature to record somewhat in character summaries of each mission.

By the way, for the event tomorrow (this isn't gonna help :ssh:):
