I'm pretty sure its a 'I'm better than you for posting this' type smug bullshit. At least, thats how I read it, which is why I'm so turned off by it.

As far as the cancer Barbie thing, a charity event like that is always good, and while a little girl with cancer will have more in her life(unless she is terminal) bald little girls probably take alot of abuse from other kids, and having one of our culture stereo types of beauty depicted that way might do some good at alleviating that.

I read it as the usual sort of slactivism that I generally get hit with on my facebook. Usually it's the like or share if you're against child abuse and ignore if you condone it. Every time one of those pops up, I keep hearing my Analytical Writing professor in my head pointing out the utter stupidity of that sort of argument.

I feel like racism in all media has gotten worse since the Trayvon Martin case. During the trial, Fox News and other right wing outlets really pushed a lot of clearly racist perspectives, and it seems as if people took that as a cue that racism was okay as long as what you say is "true."

It's not uncommon for people, especially black people, to use "niggas" as a word that basically means "guys."

Another thing I see is that they seem to think that BIG PHARMA is a huge, unified cabal. What would actually happen if one of them discovered the cure for cancer is that they would get it on the market faster than anyone else could and reap the insane profits.

They also think that cancer is one disease that you could cure with a magic pill, rather than a myriad of them with different forms of treatment based on their nature and location.

Not only that but "curing" cancer isn't going to make it disappear. People will still keep getting cancers all the time so there will always be a market for this miracle cure Big Pharma are hiding. Until they make some sort of impossible wonder drug that stops people getting any possible cancer altogether that, naturally, they will also hide because making profits is anathema to them.

It also ignores that some cancers, such as most forms of testicular cancer, are for all intents and purposes considered cured, with ~96% survival rate even in stage 3 (which is the most advanced stage)

It's just that the cure is chemotherapy, and I guess curing cancer with drugs just isn't acceptable???

People probably think of curing with other diseases, ie no terrible process or side effects like chemo or radioactive therapy compared to high rates of survival.

I know that somewhere out there, someone has tried to cure their prostate cancer with black salve. That they dissolved half their guts and require a poop bag/constant medical supervision to survive is secondary to the fact that they are technically cancer free, if only because the organs that had cancer cells present (along with with their organ neighbors) no longer exist :allears:

There is no way every scientist involved in the mystery cure decided to take a pay off over a noble prize in medicine.

My brother has a phd in physics, and he did it solely for his love of science and showing off how god drat smart he is. There is no amount of money that would be worth more to him then the the ability to go "nanananna ahahahah I got a noble prize and you dont nananannana hahahahaha"

The Nobel prize also comes with a sizable cash award, I think it's just over $1 million. So that's a lot of bribe money needed.

That, plus the marketability of being a Nobel Laureate: book deals, lecture tours, greater potential to be hired somewhere with a nice, fat pension... And that's just from a purely financial perspective.

I'm a big supporter of unions but those "Shame On X" banners are often a scam. Try talking to the 'protestors' some time. They're almost universally day laborers unconnected with any union, getting payed dollars an hour with no benefits and have no idea what they're supposed to be protesting. Sometimes they're hired by unions but other times they're hired by competitors. I don't put any stock in them anymore.

I got ball cancer and my mom worked for Pfizer (and other Big Pharma-related, smaller companies) for years, and the idea that those companies are a cabal capable of even covering up their own mistakes, greed, and bad science is hilarious, much less hiding a mythical cure for cancer

Yeah, the best thing being linked into high levels of Big Pharma will get you is access to early stage clinical trials that might let you live a little longer while you help them discover new and horrifying side effects of the medication

We've got a fair amount of those Shame On protesters out in Albuquerque, a lot of times they're outside Yanni's greek restaurant. From trying to find out more about the Shame protests, I've not been able to find much other than when the Unions are asked about them, they go 'no comment'. Going from what I've seen of them, they just sit out in chairs with a banner up. One day one of the guys was reading 50 Shades of Grey while holding the banner up.

There have been the same three people holding a similar banner at my local hospital for over two years. I didn't get why they just didn't move on, but apparently they're being paid up to $10/hr to hold the sign so that is their full time job. (how does one get a job as a union sign holder anyway?)

There was a recent major study in Germany that looked at a bunch of cases that were attributed to cannabis. Of all the deaths they looked at, only two were directly marijuana related, and both had some sort of heart issue that smoking made worse. The rest were all ruled as deaths from other causes while they happened to be smoking. The study is getting some flack.

I'm Ella Vator. I could have handled it better, but I just got mad. Somewhere in that rambling screed Lynn Guini talks about how Medicare/Medicaid expansion would have been a better alternative to the PPACA, but then he talks about how America should have voted for McCain, or for a Republican-majority Senate, or for Romney and how it totally doesn't count that he's in the military while thumbing his nose at Obamacare because he was never going to buy health insurance anyway and won't even after he leaves the service.
