I must admit, i originally was very hyped to go Dreadnought, but after seeing each of the class trailers, im pretty psyched to just go any of the roles. They've done a good job of selling each of them to me.

I think I'm going to do a few story missions then start a game as either the warlord or archdruid since those are the classes I seen the least of.

Anyone seen what's in the Advanced Game Rules tab? I'm wondering if there are options to limit hero levels and spell tiers and such.

The Rogue trailer is also strangely short, getting just under 2 mins while the others were closer to 20.

I think that the features weren't working properly and someone decided it was better to take them out at the last minute than to try and fix them (since fixing them could break other things in the game). I hope we'll be able to add some more stuff to the list later. A lot of people wanted the randomly spawned heroes to always match the races the player controlled, for example. You can see a bunch of Sorcerer units appear in the battle there. As for the Rogue one, I think at onepoint we were going to do all the trailers like that, but people really liked the longer, gameplay style ones, so we went back to doing them...

Since spells are organized by tier It would be really cool to see a option for a random class that made your tech tree by randomly pulling X number of spells/upgrades from each tier from the entire pool of spells in the game.

No item forging is probably another good one to consider, if it wasn't one of the removed ones. Also if you don't have it already, the City Founding toggle controlled at a map level is something scenario makers are gonna want ASAP I'm sure. Khagan posted:Does a background in Civ 5 help at all for someone new to this franchise? A little bit. Both games trace back to the same origins (Age of Wonders -> Masters of Magic -> Civilization 1) so there are some similarities, but overall the focus is pretty radically different. AoW maps are smaller scale and work more like scenarios, as opposed to a grand history spanning world map like Civ. City building and management are a pretty small part of AoW, and instead of researching new technologies you research new spells and upgrades for your leader. There's also much less focus on diplomacy in AoW, in about 90% of maps it boils down to either 1) Who likes you and who doesn't is already decided based on the scenario or your races, or 2) choosing your friends is based entirely around what order you want to eventually conquer them in. Much of the focus in AoW is on the combat (which has a separate tactical screen from the main world map), unit management, resource management (gold for units and new towns, mana for attack spells, summons, enchants), expanding well, and scouting the other players. Also there is a lot of focus on the maps themselves, as they can be hand crafted and can contain events and story triggers and such. That goes double for the campaign mode, which is a linear (but branching) series of story maps where you can transfer heroes/items/units between missions. Oh yeah, and maps have multiple layers in AoW as well, an above ground and below ground layer in 1, 2 and 3, and Shadow Magic also has a Shadow layer. If you like the map exploration parts of Civ, you'll probably really like them in AoW as well since they have a lot in common. Goodie huts, independents to conquer, treasure to find, founding new cities, the works. Plus AoW:SM/3 also have a random map generator and you can make the maps pretty huge if you enjoy that aspect of exploring and expanding for a long time before finally meeting your new neighbors. That's basically how Cosmos magic worked in AoW2 didn't it? You got access to the Cosmos spells but then also a few random ones from any of the other elements. I wouldn't be surprised to see that return in an expansion for 3.

Rudi Starnberg posted:I thought you choose cosmos, then you choose some levels of the other spheres, so it's not really random. A totaly random one could be fun. IIRC if you had Cosmos Mastery (ie 6 spheres of Cosmos), you get spells from every other sphere. So the upside is that you get access to tons and tons of spells, but the downside is that you have to research more low level spells to get access to the higher level ones. This was only AoW2 mind you, and I think it might have changed in a patch at some point, so I'm not actually sure that's right anymore. Edit: Okay I think the above is specifically a Merlin thing from AoW2. And I don't think it's random, I think he just literally gets EVERY spell in the game available to research. So you are probably right about that. Gwyrgyn Blood fucked around with this message at 17:53 on Mar 30, 2014 |

It was different in AoW2 and SM, for AoW2 cosmos gave you almost everything (except I think the mastery spells). In SM cosmos was a mix it as you like up to 6 selections, multiple picks of a single sphere gave you a random selection of spells up to that tier, you never got everything via cosmos even if you maxed out on a sphere, you needed to take a pure specialization for that. Edit: The max amount of sphere picks you could take in SM was 4 for a single sphere. In AoW2 cosmos was just a plain selection like any other sphere with no customization.

Oh man, I'm hyped, once I'm finished finals me and my buddy are gonna tear into this, we played countless hours of AOW 1 as kids, I even once designed my own whole campaign with the level editor, god I was a nerd. If I remember, the campaign mode in this game was basically impossible, and the multiplayer was pretty broken, but in a fun way.

Yes you're right, I dug around some more and found the games' manuals, which are very helpful. But you actually don't appear to get all of the spells even if you specialize in Shadow Magic, you only get 5 for each tier and in some cases there are more than that. So basically the way it works is: - Everyone gets access to Cosmos spells, 5/5/5/5 of them. - If you choose to be a specialist, you get 5/5/5/5 spells from that sphere. - If you choose to multiclass, you get to divide up your spheres how you want, but can't take more than 4 orbs for that sphere. The number of spells you get is: -- 1: 3/1/0/0 -- 2: 4/2/1/0 -- 3: 5/3/2/0 -- 4: 5/4/3/1

^^ Yeah I had a vague idea of that list in my head but couldn't remember how it was structured, forgot you didn't actually get everything even as a specialist in SM (Sure it was the case in AoW2). Anyways, about AoW3, I finally got around to ordering it today and serious credit goes to Gerblyn, it's his great preview videos that really sold it for me.

Gwyrgyn Blood posted:So basically the way it works is: The strategic implications of this are:
If you compare the two spell lists, one thing you'll notice is a number of new spells in Shadow Magic that specifically kick the rear end of flying units and war machines. This is because those were overpowered in the original AoW 2. Air galleys (the top-tier human unit, and the only flying war machine) are still overpowered in Shadow Magic; there's a reason those were nerfed hardcore in the major fan patch. And if you can get a single air galley on the final Shadow Magic campaign mission, you've basically won, since a single air galley can repel even a very large attacking army of shadow demons. But you can't get a human city until it's too late to matter, shame isn't it? Flying units are really, REALLY good for that mission.

Have they said anything about DLC plans or the like? It feels like they could very easily go the Civilization route where you can buy a five dollar class that maybe comes with a scenario and race or something to go with it, and that would be a pretty easy way to keep the game fresh (note: like every gamer when I say easy I legit have no clue how 'easy' it is to add things to the game).

an AOW3 developer here wrote earlier that they are more likely to release a larger expansion pack than a DLC since testing multiple DLCs costs more for QA and you have to factor in different players having some DLC and others not etc. etc. it's actually a huge pain in the rear end.

Huh, didn't know DLC was such a pain in games like this, I'm so used to Paradox games and all, but that makes sense. Oh well, I'm not one to complain about expansion packs, so hopefully the game will do well enough to justify at least one good one.

I'm unbelievably hyped for this game today after not having spoiled myself on anything about it until now, but one thing I can't find any information about is a map editor. The About page on the main site (http://ageofwonders.com/about-age-of-wonders-iii/) says: CREATE endless scenarios using the random map generator. But doesn't mention anything about being able to manually build/edit maps. That was one of my favorite parts of this series previously, please tell me it's in AoW3 I did some google searching and couldn't find anything about it other than a thread on their forums where no one mentions whether or not it's actually planned.

I like to turtle in my 4Xs, have a few short, decisive wars, and generally win via some peaceful mode like spaceship/transcendence. I'm sure I'll have fun with AoW, but what I really want (and will probably never get) is Master of Magic through the lens of someone like Firaxis, with a strong non-war component. I know there's Fall from Heaven for Civ IV, but I never really got into it.

Personally, I'd be pretty interested in a "First Age" fantasy game where the whole point is to leave behind an awesome legacy worthy of being remembered by future, lesser generations, whether it's done through crafting amazing artifacts, leaving behind incredible monuments, achieving legendary heroics and even engaging in epoch-marking wars. Bonus points if the ending consists of various adventurers picking over the ruins of the civilizations in play, marveling at what they've uncovered.
