McDowell posted:I'm also curious what they mean by immigrants 'grazing' on the nation. Welfare. --- It all started in 2016. Obama refused to give up office, his armed union thugs helping him usher in a tyrannical reign. First, he came for the cows and I said nothing. The year is now 2041; cows are scarce, and they graze the barren hellscape in ever fewer numbers. We few patriots who remain do our best to protect them, the sacred animal of our stalwart resistance to dictatorship and slavery, but we grow fewer by the day. This morning I awoke and looked over my herd of cattle, breathing in the filthy air. I look for a hay bale, but they've all long since turned to ash. "Where have all the cowboys gone?" my cohort wonders aloud.

Yup, the chart is for an article about the "stand your ground" laws causing a massive spike in gun-related deaths. It's just so drenched in artistic license that you can't tell what it's saying unless you read the article or flip it upside down.

It also, at a glance, makes it seem like the figure in question went down after Stand Your Ground was passed instead of what actually happened. I didn't realize there was anybody worse at graphs than Fox News. It's so screwed up that I immediately assumed that it must have been attached to some kind of article that was trying to spin FUD about Stand Your Ground laws trying to spin them in a positive light.

It would also be possible for someone to glance at it and take away that the number of murders went down but that doesn't necessarily mean that gun deaths went down, just more of them stopped being investigated/prosecuted as murders because suddenly it's okay to shoot people.

This was on a local radio station's page, which was talking about the school stabbing (public page, so I left the names and a couple of earlier comments for context). The question posted was "Do you forgive the student? Should he be placed in a mental hospital or go to prison?" As you can see, this ended the conversation.

This is the story of one soldier's struggles: Obviously there are a few things that are untrue in here. Like, getting the flu won't kill a healthy young man. It'll just make him stronger. Getting sick is like nature's vaccines (please ignore my title, some jerk did that, not me.) What should I say back to him?

Honestly, I think it is a parody, but Poe's law and all that. I don't think the person who wrote that has ever been in any military, or even close to one. Being "fired" from the Marines? Seriously? Having to pay for medical care out of your own pocket when you are a soldier on active duty, for injuries/sicknesses suffered from performing your assigned duties? How do you show up for work early when you are technically on duty 24 hours a day? The President of the United States of America being "rude" by not adhering to the standards of one United States Marine is cute, too. I'm sure Obongo was just playing Flappy Bird on his iPhone while waiting for poor Jeff to get a little colder. Alternatively "Why should I care about one guys lovely life choices? If he had joined a Union he could have made more money and gotten healthcare for free, for doing less work. What an idiot."

Or hell, just ask him who he thinks wrote that little blurb. It wasn't the Marine, for obvious reasons. Well, how the gently caress would they know so many minor details about Jeff totally calling out Obummer on cutting his socialist military healthcare? And for that matter, why the gently caress do we trust that guy's word about how things ~totally~ happened, believe me guys it really really happened just like that? Seriously, it's one layer deep. Cache Cab posted:Obviously there are a few things that are untrue in here. Like, getting the flu won't kill a healthy young man. It'll just make him stronger. Getting sick is like nature's vaccines (please ignore my title, some jerk did that, not me.) Well no. Flu can kill a healthy young man if it goes untreated and depending on the virulence of the particular flu. A significant portion of the deaths from the 1918 flu pandemic were in otherwise healthy young adults. The idea of surviving a disease means you are "stronger" is based on some simplification of how diseases work. While you're unlikely to be reinfected with that exact strain of influenza again, influenza viruses mutate quickly enough that you could still get (and die from) the flu the next year. In fact infections that people survive leave quite a few people paralyzed, chronically ill, etc. For instance, a severe case of influenza-related bronchitis left my brother with chronic shortness of breath for most of his childhood. Getting sick is still not a good thing, even if it will provide protection from that particular disease especially when considering the flu. Most of the childhood illnesses that this "getting sick = a vaccine" was true for (measles, chicken pox, etc.) now have vaccines so it's much better to get your children vaccinated than to let them get sick.
