Yeah, you can't rename SHIVS. I consider it a glaring oversight by Firaxis.

You say that, but! Not sure if it's compatible with the most recent patch, but I think it is. I hope it is, there's nothing like renaming your shiv "WALL-E" or something ridiculous.

I'm not gonna say that SHIVs are the best thing in the game, but I love playing with them. Since they are easily replaceable you can basically play them as even more aggressive assaults, which is saying a lot. Hover SHIVs also get extra defense while flying which basically makes them flying machines of death. Big thing is, SHIVs don't get really USEFUL unless you do their foundry stuff. The weapon they are equipped with is irrelevant to their model, basically once you finish the SHIV laser project they all get lasers and so on and so forth.

They get some really broken abilities too, like Sentinel Drone - or as I like to call it, "thing that abuses EXALT AI during defending transmitter missions."

So, speaking of Sentinel, it is the one overwatch skill you really want on a sniper in training roulette. Walk forward, game feature into overwatch, shoot two things. Even better when you get covering fire as well.

:neckbeard: I was just hoping I'd get my name mentioned when a SHIV got a kill (I knew you couldn't rename the SHIVs themselves), but if this could get implemented, that would be really cool! Naming a SHIV named 'Fred' would be great. If the mod won't install, just mentioning me in the commentary would be good too.

Just a note about the shieldbreaker achievement?

Still kicks in if you break the shield by killing the Sectoid.

Much easier.

Still took me a while, since it required leaving a MECtoid alive and with escorts for more than a turn, and I did not want to do that.

Given how buggy the cheevos in this game are, not much point in going after them totally legit. Several hundred hours in this game and I still haven't ever gotten the "get all research" one.

I got mechtoids pretty early in my last game, and goddamn are they entertaining with low ranking soldiers and no MECs. I think I had laser rifles already, but not much else. And it looks like Slingshot makes it basically easy mode as far as research goes (I never saw a battleship, but don't have Slingshot).

That achievement didn't get buggy until EW. Unless you've put in all that time only with EW, you probably just kept missing a research project, like the two Battleship-dependent techs (Blaster Launcher and Fusion Lance), or Interrogate Ethereal. The achievement isn't for researching everything you can see, it's for researching everything there is, and doing them all within any one run. The achievement for the Foundry is the same.

If you're really fussed about it, play a game of base EU. It'll pop.

You get bonus meld from Mectoids and heavy floaters, but other than that, it's the same 20 a mission throughout the game.

I'll take a look at this, but when you start adding layers and secondary programs to install what the first is supposed to do then we're really pushing it for a JAIDS event.

Holy crap. Aside from that one...hiccup at the end there, SHIVs freakin' dominated. Is it always like that? I mean, I understand that they're getting huge bonuses since they can flank EVERY time and not care at all about cover, but are they always that beefy or is it just the endgame tech that makes them go from wind-up toys to Skynet?

I remembered to rename and assign medals before the next mission, but I still have a few left over. I'd uh take votes, but I have three medals left and I think I realized that if I give two of them to Nittien, she will have 154 aim... So uh... anyone want to make a massive angel of death sniper for this LP?

For the curious, 124 base, +10 scope, +10 Bonus Buneos Aires Air Medal, +10 Otto Zander Medal of Gallantry. Throw in some height advantage (+20), drat good ground (+10), and depth perception gene mod (+5), and uh... I think she could snipe god.

edit: too late, made up my mind, this is happening.

A fully upgraded SHIV, especially in EW, is essentially comparable with your top, level troops, except it doesn't have as many special abilities. EW added a couple more goodies, but SHIVs have always been fairly dependable expendable murder machines. Not as good as a fully-armed colonel trooper, but also not nearly as risky to field.

Edit: I find them oddly adorable as well, especially the landbound versions.

Not to worry, I think Jade's almost guaranteed himself a hugely incongrous sniping miss at some inconvenient point in the future. But both of those would be amusing too, although I have a hard time seeing how anyone's going to friendly fire the valhallan valkyrie of death hovering above the battlefield way in the back. Isobel was the MEC in that mission, and I think she's a burny MEC. So BOOSH wasn't really on the table.
