It's incwedibwe easy to suck my own dick.

Spoofing is trivial, as are multiple accounts. It makes you a sad, pathetic person for cheating at a pointless AR game, but some people lead empty lives I guess.

If it's ruining your gaming experience you can contact Niantic and they'll be delighted to refund what you paid for the game.

Spoofing, multiple accounts, sharing devices/playing for someone who isn't there (during 13MAGNUS, some teams would load up an account with keys and ship the phone to teammates in other areas.) Not to mention harassing and threatening people in real life

Come with me
if you want to live.
Spoofing and multiple accounts are real dumb but I think the sending a phone to other teammates through the mail is cool as hell and totally within the spirit of the game.

I mean its still buying an entire phone for a free-to-play video game and its probably still not kosher by the terms of service but that's totally something a clandestine cyber-Illuminati agent would do to get an advantage over the enemy cyber-Illuminati.

gently caress people who take it so seriously they'd harass another person over it though.

I just got a story about that very thing.
I managed to find the one portal in my town NOT in a parking lot of the actual portal. There's a small Bridge about a cars length long with a sign for the river it's... Bridging. The portal Is SUPPOSED to be for the sign, but it's actually off to the side of the bridge somewhere in the brush. This Bridge has no sidewalk leading up to it, but the bridge itself has one, but only on one side.
Anyway, I hop over there and take a seat on the side of the bridge and flip the thing. As cars race by at a solid 50mph, I get messages from three separate players from green saying there's NO WAY I was able to get that portal without spoofing.
This just confused the poo poo out of me, cause clearly SOMEONE already had, but this thing was so remote and worthless and technically dangerous I just let it go and didn't bother with it again.

I completely agree that it's in the spirit of the game, but Niantic said you can't do it.

There are some people who will take any game too seriously and all you can do is report them to Niantic and/or the police. Fortunately there are decent people on the other team around here who try to rein in teammates who are toeing the line and will also report them if they cross it.

Farm keys, you've found your spam link target.

People will always whine and make accusations of spoofing, the poo poo I'm referring to is more serious stuff like threats of violence, trying to run people off the road, and intentionally coming inches from clipping people with their cars.

I live in a town with a portal:player ratio of like 10. It's really funny reading this. When the other two players here saw I was playing they politely told me they'd stop recharging their portals less than L8 so I could level up. I can't even imagine running into another player. The closest was 10 minutes before me arriving at the post office, one of the other guys stopped in and deployed and linked it after an attack.

We have a newer and much more active player in the area that's stirred up a bunch of drama. There's people taking photos of each other, tailing them in cars, for the team's database of enemy players, a guy that flips out if you don't link according to the map he made, etc. He's popular because he's an old guy with no family, so he can spend all day driving around for hours.

Some people take ingress way too seriously. I've heard stories of people taking photos of res/en members over a dozen times now, and I don't understand why. Aside from being creepy as gently caress, what tacticool advantage do you actually gain? In my hometown there is only one person who plays, and while I don't know him personally, we have a friendly rivalry going. In the town where I go to school, there are hundreds of players, and even if you knew every single enemy faction member it wouldn't help you, because portals always flip whenever someone has a class in a portalled building. Taking creepshots of someone for a smartphone game is bizarre.

Yup. It won't help that blue has green outnumbered like 3:1 in my city and the area is dominated by the same 6 blue players who have infinite time and gas money. But at least it'll be some new names to see.

They have two uses as far as I can see:
1) Key farming. Keys stashed in a capsule still count against inventory but nothing else so if you want a bunch of keys to a farm or portal just keep stashing them in the capsule and hack again. Bam, more keys.

2) Bulk transfer of items to another player

To expand on this, any time you load an item into a capsule, the game treats it the same way as if you just dropped the item on the ground, even though it still counts against inventory cap. Similarly, unloading is like just picking it up.

So when they keep bumping shields (god I hope they don't do this again, but they did it maybe a couple weeks ago when everyone could get ultra strikes), you can "regenerate" them into new ones with upgraded mitigation by loading them into capsules and unloading. If you have old shields lying around you can load them all into a capsule and they'll get the same mitigation factor they would had you just picked them up today.

So, in the forum outage gap, I got up to level 6.333. With my capsules I now have entirely too many keys for some of the portals in my town, and I managed a 7k field yesterday (that's pretty good given our population density in NH).

Lame. You know Niantic can't get their poo poo together to actually bring enough codes to anomalies and yet you're taking them and not helping your team?

They had bunches at Gettysburg, and are even distributing to members of link-and-field teams in secondary sites.

Additionally, we didn't have any problems with server capacity there, but we DID drown the towers and backhaul. 800 people using the Internet on their cell phones simultaneously murdered the infrastructure of a small tourist town. Still fun, though.

So I literally just started this game, due to a local gamer restaurant offered a $100 it card to like The portals at their two locations. Anyway I was wondering if anyone knows the end result of this game will be, is it marketing or just a fun game? It's been going for years from what I can see. Is it worth getting into now? Or should I skip it?

It's a weird game, that needs a significant time investment to be fun.
Do you live in or around a major metropolitan area? Do you find yourself frequently traveling different places? Do you enjoy making a poo poo ton of triangles? Yes to any of these will make it much easier to enjoy the game.

I don't know how people play this in the Western States, tbh.

There's a tiny amount of marketing -- a few chains like Jamba Juice have apparently made a deal where all their locations are portals. But mostly it's just an addictive little strategy "overlay" of your travels in the real world, with a fun backstory.

It's perfectly possible to play it casually (that's really all I do), but if you want to go farther down the rabbit hole, there's local faction organization, the anomalies and other events, and even international strategy planning. (Hey, those artifacts have to get to their destination on another continent somehow...)

For the record, I'm one of the rabbits. Google's constructed a fun game that encourages a real sense of community and includes a compelling story, which has the delightful side-effect of making you seem schizophrenic in front of the normals.

See, this where you guys are, respectfully wrong.
In a game with no way to securely talk to just one person, it's incredibly easy and common for the other team to spy on your COMM for any potential info. So people have been communicating in hangouts for ages. But it's a pain to get that initial contact because of the disconnect between ingress profile and g+ profile.
Now, they've completely solved the problem.

I was pretty active with the Atlanta Enlightened for a couple months and learned a lot of stuff, got to L7. I ultimately got kind of bored, and it would have been buoyed by the relatively active and fun Atlanta ENL crew - but the drifting was just too frustrating for me. Along the way, though, a L8 (L14 when the update hit) in Buckhead who had been playing since beta taught me a lot of stuff.

Atlanta factions - green at least, but I'm pretty sure both sides - never used comms or Hangouts. From what I'm told, Hangouts make it really hard/impossible to kick people, and they ended up with green channels that were full of bored blue spy accounts back when the side imbalance was as bad as 10:1. We used an app called GroupMe, which was more secure. In order to get access to the Gwinnett County channel, I had to actually meet at least two of the senior members in real life and show them my phone, which ended up being a lot more casual than it sounded. Atlanta was still heavily blue, of course, but green was surprisingly well-organized and tight-knit, but still surprisingly welcoming to new people. I met at least one couple that had met through the game too. They had regular loot farming operations, multiple target raids, always something going on even if we were always losing the overall city.

The biggest downsides the game has working against it are:
A) loving GPS drifting - this basically ruined it for me, getting a reliable GPS fix where I played was way too unreliable; the worst part is that there probably isn't a solution, at least with this generation of GPS hardware
B) the incredible goddamn simplicity of gameplay itself; I get that they want to get the real game to be stuff like inferring the other guys' real-life patterns and locations, and coordinating with your faction buddies - but the building/destroying/hacking system itself gets really boring, especially if you're just dicking around solo
C) terrible interface; it's seriously Windows 3.1 bad, there's so many cues they could take from even mediocre cell phones games to optimize the speed and intuitiveness of the interface, but instead you get this clunky mess - in a game where managing your inventory and the inventory cap are both critical for high-level play, you would think they would do more than just throw bones like introducing capsules

I might still get back into it someday, as I really like the idea and I think it's got a lot more potential than most AR games, but the suburb I live in isn't real conducive to the game, and the local portals I submitted months ago for the area still haven't been approved.
