Yeah, he probably wouldn't be doing that if the small Tea Party caucus wasn't giving him hell. It's probably mostly just that he's tired of screwing with all that stuff, and not actually because there's a credible threat to his position as Speaker.

He's probably right about that, but it indicates he thinks McCarthy will lose ML and whip contests

Arguments from politicians about how they should be able to basically write laws explicitly in exchange for donations is less entertaining though. gently caress sakes.

Keep in mind that his current Speakership was only barely secured, and only because of literal last-minute conversions of a few reps who "heard God speaking to them." The far-right TP caucus is the primary driver of this split. Previously they were loud enough to be heard and threaten the vote, but not numerous enough to really matter. After November, there are two stats to watch to determine how easy Boehner would find another vote: 1) GOP majority level. Currently they're +17 or so for the chamber--if this goes down then he has a smaller margin of error for vote wrangling. 2) TP caucus membership. The more wingnuts get in, the more discordant the GOP. That said, a lot of his previous woes could also be laid at Cantor's feet, so at least that's one headache he'll not have to deal with.

So are there any good podcasts that people here recommend? I spend like eight hours a day in a warehouse and though I love me some music I do like to hear news and analysis. Honestly haven't had a news/politics thing to listen to since NPR canned Talk of the Nation, and I miss having something like that. That I couldn't listen to Ken Rudin make terrible puns about Cantor's flop made me kind of sad, I'll admit. Needs to be something I can download though, since I get terrible reception at work.

E: if anything this makes it into House of Cards rather than Alpha House, albeit either is unlikely. AH has a modicum of hope (see Gil-Jon's speech on the beach and Bettencourt's "let's you crazyasses fight" debate for examples) whereas HoC is basically "Frank is the worst person ever and will betray all who trust him without the slightest concern, never mind his enemies." A Brat type of crazy dark horse would be a comedy sideplot in AH while it would be completely anticlimactic in HoC because Frank would just have the guy's brake wires cut and then kill off the bag man and the cut man himself. Does littlefinger get iced by a hooker or something in the books? Because that's what happened here. Cantor spent the past 5 years working in the rafters to leverage teepartei hatred against Boner for the sole purpose of making Speaker, and whoops, the demented Cane Corso/Boston Terrier crossbreed chewed through its leash and mauled its self-styled keeper instead. I'm not nearly as familiar with Adam Smith as you are but, isn't his work "The Wealth of Nations" actually five separate books. The fifth being "Of the Revenue of the Sovereign or Commonwealth" which deals entirely with the role of government in commerce, and the rest of his books are full of his theories on the role of government in regard to the creation and protection of commerce. Smith actually thought that government was obligated to take an active role in commerce; not the freedom from government libertarian talking points attributed to him today.
