A week ago this actually wouldn't seem realistic. As hosed up as the GOP is, they know how to leverage power and money when it comes to keeping the syphilitic paranoid lunatics they call a base in line.

But then they hosed up and now I don't know where the floor is, it's the best feeling ever. Who knows how badly it'll twist these sick fucks. They might come out of this with Stockman or Barton or something like that in charge. It's going to be incredible.

This isn't true. Cantor spent a lot of time behind the scenes sharpening knives to try to take Boehner out. This included a very public attempting at ousting him at the beginning of this Congress. There's a reason that Boehner is Speaker, and that reason is that he's good at the nuts and bolts of garnering support from other members. He brings in a lot of funding, and he distributes that funding. He shows up to stump for members during elections.

Cantor's downfall was that he was literally Littlefinger. Everyone had a reason to hate him. Sure, some of the same people who hated Cantor also hate Boehner. That overlap is not significant, though. The Tea Party base doesn't like Boehner, but Boehner still has okay support from the other people in the House.

It's thought that Boehner will retire from his Speakership position after this congress, and hand the reins over to somebody else. Yeah, he probably wouldn't be doing that if the small Tea Party caucus wasn't giving him hell. It's probably mostly just that he's tired of screwing with all that stuff, and not actually because there's a credible threat to his position as Speaker.

Aww, thanks. I'm glad I could help.

Adam Smith really does get a bad rep, when he's actually a really cool philosopher. Outdated in many respects, but then, he was writing about 250 years ago; of course a lot of his stuff is outdated. Other than codifying many of the terms used today, he's got about as much to do with modern libertarianism as practiced by the politicians and businessmen today as Thomas Jefferson does to the theocrats who try to claim him as one of their own.

Smith apparently considered it obvious that mankind wouldn't dare to place commercial interests above the welfare of others; he'd be horrified at the existence of a sweatshop. But so many practitioners seem to believe that they get to be the exception, or that the market will somehow sort it out.

And I was being totally serious when I said I wished more people would read Smith's first book The Theory of Moral Sentiments. Once you get into the swing of 1750s English, it's a really nice look at how to logic out how empathy works. We can understand other people by putting ourselves in their shoes, and they can help us calm down and think rationally by remembering how we must appear to them from the outside.

quote:

How selfish soever man may be supposed, there are evidently some principles in his nature, which interest him in the fortunes of others, and render their happiness necessary to him, though he derives nothing from it, except the pleasure of seeing it. Of this kind is pity or compassion, the emotion we feel for the misery of others, when we either see it, or are made to conceive it in a very lively manner. That we often derive sorrow from the sorrows of others, is a matter of fact too obvious to require any instances to prove it; for this sentiment, like all the other original passions of human nature, is by no means confined to the virtuous or the humane, though they perhaps may feel it with the most exquisite sensibility. The greatest ruffian, the most hardened violator of the laws of society, is not altogether without it.

quote:

[...]how disagreeable does he appear to be, whose hard and obdurate heart feels for himself only, but is altogether insensible to the happiness or misery of others! We enter, in this case too, into the pain which his presence must give to every mortal with whom he converses, to those especially with whom we are most apt to sympathize, the unfortunate and the injured.

Eh, I wouldn't be so sure. Keep in mind that his current Speakership was only barely secured, and only because of literal last-minute conversions of a few reps who "heard God speaking to them."
The far-right TP caucus is the primary driver of this split. Previously they were loud enough to be heard and threaten the vote, but not numerous enough to really matter. After November, there are two stats to watch to determine how easy Boehner would find another vote:
1) GOP majority level. Currently they're +17 or so for the chamber--if this goes down then he has a smaller margin of error for vote wrangling.
2) TP caucus membership. The more wingnuts get in, the more discordant the GOP.

That said, a lot of his previous woes could also be laid at Cantor's feet, so at least that's one headache he'll not have to deal with.

E: if anything this makes it into House of Cards rather than Alpha House, albeit either is unlikely. AH has a modicum of hope (see Gil-Jon's speech on the beach and Bettencourt's "let's you crazyasses fight" debate for examples) whereas HoC is basically "Frank is the worst person ever and will betray all who trust him without the slightest concern, never mind his enemies." A Brat type of crazy dark horse would be a comedy sideplot in AH while it would be completely anticlimactic in HoC because Frank would just have the guy's brake wires cut and then kill off the bag man and the cut man himself.

Does littlefinger get iced by a hooker or something in the books? Because that's what happened here.

Cantor spent the past 5 years working in the rafters to leverage teepartei hatred against Boner for the sole purpose of making Speaker, and whoops, the demented Cane Corso/Boston Terrier crossbreed chewed through its leash and mauled its self-styled keeper instead.

I'm not nearly as familiar with Adam Smith as you are but, isn't his work "The Wealth of Nations" actually five separate books. The fifth being "Of the Revenue of the Sovereign or Commonwealth" which deals entirely with the role of government in commerce, and the rest of his books are full of his theories on the role of government in regard to the creation and protection of commerce. Smith actually thought that government was obligated to take an active role in commerce; not the freedom from government libertarian talking points attributed to him today.

So I actually know the Paulite wunderkid who was was Brat's adviser, because our college years overlapped a bit. Dude was a big, imposing guy who would drive his pickup truck onto the campus green to hold barbecues and blast country music. One year at Plenary, a biannual event where the entire student body meets to discuss things like alcohol policy, changes to the honor code, etc, he went up to the microphone and proposed a resolution to make himself dictator of the college.

When the news about Brat came it, it took me a while to realize that I knew the guy, because at college literally everyone include he called him "Nard." I wouldn't have know his actual name if it weren't for Facebook. I had this really weird moment where that night that Cantor lost, someone posted a link to Brat's website, and chrome had it darkened as though I had already clicked it. Turned out I had read about him months ago when the Paulite posted it on Facebook.

So Cantor was beaten by a Paulite called Nard.
So a guy named Brat beat the incumbent with the help of a fresh faced college graduate called Nard and it's entirely possible that they may have been helped behind the scenes by a guy named Cooter (among others) ? And this BratNard dream team has thrown the GOP into disarray? Am I getting that right?
