Hell, I once cleared out the entirety of the Tomb of VARN in Might and Magic 6 without having done even half the things I was supposed to do before going there when I was a dumb kid. Dumb kid adventures were the best.

I actually thought Sarevok was a much better written villain than Irenicus, but David Warner's rendition is one of the best examples of video voice acting, ever, even today. Remember, Sarevok wasn't a brutish fighter who just killed people with a sword-he was a subtle political schemer who was trying to engineer a war. It'd have been a much cooler story if he were just an ambitious politician rather than a magical divine aspirant. With that said, I tend to think that Baldur's Gate represented a step back from Fallout, which preceded it by one year. Fallout introduced or popularized features like character stats playing an important role outside of combat, multiple quest solutions, and a reactive game world. Baldur's Gate was essentially a linear dungeon crawler. Also, I thought the combat in Baldur's Gate was weak because it was too reliant on luck and combat in Baldur's Gate 2 was weak because its challenge was limited to mage encounters that could invariably be beaten by set spell combos. But I loved the combat in Icewind Dale, so I think the problem was with encounter design rather than gameplay system or engine.

Yeah Sarevok's whole scheme was big intricate and clever, I agree. By comparison, Irenicus' revenge thing is a lot less interesting. But Warner loving sold it with the mix of contempt and total lack of passion in his voice so as a villain Irenicus is amazing and memorable.

Bioware's writing is bad. As the first person to say this I'll accept praise as it is given.

After avoiding the Bioware forums for so long that I didn't even know they remodeled them, I figured to see how the crazies there were taking the news about the romance gating. http://forum.bioware.com/topic/502555-romance-discussion/page-464#entry16743544 In short, some absolutely outraged that Bioware's taking a 'step back' from the DA2 free for all approach. Some are terrified they might only be able to only have one romance due to the gating selections. Many pissed that Bioware's not been forthcoming with exactly how many are which orientation and preference because they need to know this to plot out romance arcs first before doing anything since romances are the only important thing in a Bioware game. There's also a lengthy derail discussing Quinari penis length and girth, and one guy who's ballistic over the possibility of not being able to kick party members if they refuse to accept a character due to race. And of course massive lists of people speculating on characters we only know a name and maybe a image on's sexual preference. Ah..Bioware forums..you never change.

BSN's creepy, creepy obsessive horniness remains as strong as ever. I wonder if these guys know that dating sims, the games they so clearly want the most, already comprise an entire genre for them to drool over. Holy loving poo poo. Seriously? Does that really happen? poo poo, there's a huge market opportunity for softcore (or not) "romance simulators" out there, folks. One that's engineered specifically to genderfluid, otherkin, transqueer, *insert your new term here* folks. Oh yeah, and furries. In fact, I'm guessing that if you make one such simulator making fun of them from start to finish, they won't be able to get the joke and still masturbate happily to it for hours on end. Just make the graphics top-notch, voice acting well done and very intricate romance paths and dramas. Basically a huge medieval The Sims + drama dating game + sex simulator. If you manage to make women look really loving "empowered" in that game as well (maybe like this: https://twitter.com/tinderfessions/status/478696101437263873), I can't imagine it not spawning a huge franchise. What are you waiting for?

If I remember rightly from the Awful Game Mods thread, when someone asked why there was such a preponderance of porn mods it essentially boiled down to there are a lot of hard/softcore simulators out there but they're microtransactioned on a scale that makes anything else look like free giveaways and there's horrible credit card fraud since the majority of these are run by shady organizations as well as money laundering so for people interested in this sort of thing, it's go for whatever other avenues that aren't as shady. Granted if Bioware did a romance simulator of their own, they'd make mad bank off how crazy their forumsbase is.

Will Dragon Keep be an extended version of that weird Mass Effect 2 interview between you, Jacob and Miranda in the beginning or will it just be a bunch of HTML form pages you check off and hit submit?

I remember I actually feared I'd not be able to kill Loghain myself, leaving it to Alistair to finish the job. Man, was I happy to take that burden off his back.
