Seriously, have you loving morons ever visited any other city where literally half the infrastructure isn't crumbling/burning/collapsing on a daily basis?

Congrats though that downtown Detroit is full of activity. Its almost as if everyone has moved into the city center to escape the barren post-apocalyptic wasteland that is the majority of suburbs.

I can literally drag the google streetview icon/man to any block and find multiple burned out buildings.

its funny when i use detroit as a reference for a post apocalyptic city and someone is always like "woah, hey now" and comes to the defense of detroit because i live in a city full of stupid white yuppies. i kindly ask them how comfortable would they be living at least 5 miles from the nearest functioning police station or substation while they're still technically in city limits.

burn detroit to the ground. raze it and start anew. i remember there being an A/T probably ~8-10 years ago from an ambulance driver in Detroit and they'd say how dangerous it was since people would even shoot at the loving ambulance. it's probably worse now

does anyone actually unironically defend detroit?

i've noticed things like super bowl ads that are like "i'm from detroit and we SURVIVE," but i'm like yeah no one is saying you're not tough as nails, it's just that your city has imploded and your institutions have all failed, how is that not a failed city/state

detroit isn't mogadishu 2: black hawk downer like most people seem to believe, and its really just the natural end result of the american attitude to the city; suburbs killing the city and replacing nothing of what urban life brings. hopefully oil depletion and global warming burn that out of us

Why rebuild it? The reason it's collapsing is that there isn't a reason to have a city there. The industry that grew the city is gone and it's not going to come back.

I drove there a couple of months ago. There is a giant abandoned building full of graffiti welcoming you into the city.

The place is hilariously bad.

We should use Detroit as an experimental city to test social welfare reforms we're too conservative to attempt nationwide. Socialize medicine, socialize education, legalize drugs--turn Detroit into the center of real-world progressive politic, then chart the numbers for a decade.

the only other major city that suffered similar population loss is st louis.

detroit's unique position comes from being so spread out with existing infrastructure that costs tons of money. other cities are bigger, like indy and jacksonville, but they have large areas that are undeveloped and don't cost money to maintain. detroit was built to accommodate nearly 2 million people in mostly single family homes, and now less then 700k people live in the city. once the auto industry shrunk, it took the capability of the city to maintain itself with it.

there are nice neighborhoods but most of the city once you move away from downtown is really bad.

Its gotten significantly worse in the last 5 years. The city is hitting the breaking point.
