So how much can you actually get away with? I'm going to be in possession of the Deadzone base set and the deadzone terrain booster, then after than it's cardboard boxes and cans of coke for silos.

Generally the best sources of makeshift terrain are small boxes, or stacks of books. Oblong blocks work fine as terrain in infinity, 'cover' can be used by a model coming half out of a corner for example, there is no requirement for what 40k calls 'area terrain'. The main point of cover in infinity is to completely block Line of Sight. If LoS isn't very restricted, everyone gets killed very quickly!

To clarify, the main terrain elements Infinity likes are:
- solid objects, like buildings or boxes (interior optional)
- low cover (60% of a model's height) so you can claim partial cover but not hide entirely unless you crawl
- area terrain - 2-3 roughly CD-sized blobs of vegetation (low-vis zone, very difficult jungle terrain) spice the table a lot and make MSV1 and terrain abilities useful. When I play on "abandoned training grounds" type tables (lots of high walls) I like to place various difficult terrain like rubble (mountain), broken pipes (aquatic) etc. between the walls, to force units to either take the movement penalty, go around it and waste orders, or actually use the multiterrain abilities.

Yes, you can do without area terrain, but it makes the games more interesting.

Right, more like 2nd edition 40k/necromunda. Necromunda is very much the kind of vibe I get from this game, as well as being probably the best thing GW ever made, so I'm keen to give this a try. Does it have an ongoing campaign system like Necro had?

Whats the table size meant to be? 2x2 feet?

Pierzak
Oct 30, 2010
It has a campaign system, but it's very different from Necromunda, almost no unit advancement, more focused on the mission objectives etc. It's basically a way to string more varied scenarios with fluff.

Infinity is played on 4' x 4' tables.

Genghis Cohen

Very interested to hear about that use of area terrain Pierzak. Basically, despite the rules being in the main book etc, I have very seldom seen difficult terrain used. This may change in this cool new group I visited last week.

Infinity has a fair few missions published in the most recent rulebook, Campaign Paradiso. I just ordered a copy actually. My experience of their missions though is that they are quite elaborate, and (a slight problem with lots of their published rules) rather hard to parse at first glance. A lot of people use a mission system called YAMS (for Yet Another Mission System - thus named because lots of different fans tried their hands at designing missions for infinity) which is a deck of mission cards, with each player drawing their missions randomly. That is a simpler system for non-narrative games, suitable for league or pick-up games. In any case I would recommend learning the game as straight kill-em-up, also not using the 'retreat' rules which make forces run away after 60% of your points have been killed.

Bear in mind that the Infinity rules will undergo an update later this summer. So I would get more involved in the basic mechanics of AROs and order activation, than strain to memorise all the weapon stats, special rules and equipment types.

Pierzak
Oct 30, 2010
Half of it is really really useful, and the other half (Seed-Soldiers) is a points-filler that's seldom used.

The problem is that you don't really save that much if you buy the Malignos/Shrouded/Speculo as separate blisters, so

I'd recommend (pick and choose):
2 Aswangs (definitely at least 1)
2 Ikadron Batroids
3 Drones (2x Q, 1x M)
3+ Shrouded (all combis or one sniper)
2+ Malignos (I use both combis and snipers often)
1 combi Cadmus so you can make a combi Aswang :v: (also, they're fun)
Speculo
Wormbot + wormlets
Treitak if you play the Spec-Ops format (because gently caress Corax for starting as a seed)
...at this point you should know what your tastes and priorities are. Sphinx is awesome but expensive, Sheskiin is good but wants you to be more aggressive than I normally play Shas, I like Calibans but they have only one model at the moment, and Gwailos are kinda lackluster even though they look awesome.

What he runs greatly depends on if he's going to be playing ITS scenarios or not.

As an oversimplification, ISS is basically expensive troops offset by stupidly cheap troops.

Most really effective ISS lists will run 4-8 Kuang Shi as a base and then it's just preference from there. If you're playing ITS you are almost required to run the Aleph Sophotec and Dakini Paramedics for specialists.

Imperial agents are generally considered too expensive for what you get, but I personally like running them. If your buddy does decide to use them I'd recommend using only the crane or pheasant in a list, not both.

Because the Kuang Shi explode I like to use them as moveable "mines". I've played around with them in separate order groups, I found that I like being able to put a "mine" basically wherever I want, while still having another order pool to work with. It sort of feels like a feels like a vanilla list with 17 extra orders.... I am aware that it's different than the generally accepted way to run ISS.

I feel like your response was partly tounge n cheek, but if not, seriously, Try something different some time.

Also, spending SWC for the sake of spending SWC is overrated. However , I will admit it's better err on the side of spending as much as you can.

Jack of All Trades
Played the final game of our escalation league tonight. I got lazy and took almost exactly the same list this week that I'd taken last week, but it worked far better for Lifeblood than it did last week in Supply Run. The game was pretty one-sided: my Nomad opponent took choice of table edge rather than first turn (perhaps correctly considering the table), but he made a couple of errors in deployment and I killed off most of his key pieces with my infiltrating TO Camo sniper. Great guy, and he was a fantastic sport about it, but it must have been a pretty rough game from his side of the table (he'd brought a GML list and I combat camoed both his Total Reaction bot and his GML bot on the very first turn). I won with 9 objective points to 1 - but unfortunately, looking at the league standings afterward, I think that getting 9 points rather than a full 10 will drop me from 2nd down to 4th. Very close league overall, aside from the guy in runaway first place.

My list:

Panoceania - Military Order | 10 models
________________________________________________________

Teutonic Knight Lieutenant (42|1)
Teutonic Knight Combi (42|0)
Teutonic Knight Combi (42|0)
Order Sergeant TO Sniper (39|1.5)
Order Sergeant TO FO (29|0)
Konstantinos (29|0)
Order Sergeant Sniper (27|1.5)
Order Sergeant Spitfire (20|1)
Indigo Combi (+1 wip, CH: Mimetism, Super-Jump, Doctor) (13|0|12xp)
Order Sergeant Combi (13|0)
________________________________________________________

296/300 points | 5/6 swc
open with Aleph Toolbox : http://goo.gl/p8Bq4Y

I don't really see any way to do without the Order Sergeant link team. A knight link would be so much cooler, but Teutons can't be specialists and in certain matchups the linked sniper is just too critical a defensive tool to pass up.

e: That actually ties in to the discussion we had after the game. Deploying when going second, and building a list that can survive going second, is extremely hard compared to building and playing a list that can use it's active turn to obliterate the other guy. I can't emphasize this enough as a player who is still learning the game: you need tools and tactics to surviving losing initiative. The easiest tool to reach for is a link team - but it's obvious that experienced players do just fine going second with vanilla factions who lack link teams. So are link teams a crutch? I feel pretty confident saying that a vanilla faction is stronger than a sectorial during the active turn, simply because of the sheer variety of threats it can bring, so if you can mitigate the defensive disadvantage of lacking a link team...

I'm just not sure that all factions can mitigate the initiative advantage equally. Ariadna seems great at it, with about a billion infiltrating minelayers and ARO specialists in their vanilla lists. Haqq seems harder, though you can still get some cheap speedbumps out there (I still want to experiment more with Panzerfaust Daylami). Some factions, including but not limited to Haqq, Ariadna, and Yu Jing, can also take a list with so many cheap impetuous units that it's hard to cripple their order pool even with an alpha strike. Something like vanilla PanO, on the other hand, sounds... not very fun to play when going second. It just feels really tough to project turn zero board control without either a linked sniper or infiltrating minelayer units to clog advance lanes.

I look forward to deploying this and seeing the look on my enemy's face. Also I will try (for the first time) actually deploying more than one model under a single camo marker. It could be a good surprise to spring in ARO, normally a very weak time for camo markers.

I've played a very similar list in the past, and it's tons of fun. Instead of Morans I took a Tomcat and an Alguacil, though (and my weapon and skill load out was different). That HMG Intruder is going to own. I love the variety of list types that the Nomads can take.

I think it looks pretty solid. We've only got one player here, and what you posted seems to sums them up pretty well. If you added anything I might say something about the fact that the fireteams can be reformed on the fly, and that the durability of the symbiote armor comes at a price in the form of weakness to weapons with fire ammo.

I'm ijyt's friend, thanks for the input. I've been spending some time looking at the models I like and trying not to spend all the money, so here are some lists I've come up with, just wondering if you guys think they will play ok/be fun as I have absolutely 0 Infinity experience.

As you can see it's pretty much just the starter set + a box of celestial guard + maybe one or two extra models. Yaoxie/SU-Jian/Ninja seem the most interesting. What would be the most useful/fun thing to stick in there?

Neither list is "optimal", but either of the two lists will work / be fun, and are great starts if your looking to maximize what you're buying vs what you're putting on the table. The 2nd list is going to be a bit more expensive, but the Su Jian is a blast to play.

Keep in mind it is absolutely normal / okay to proxy in Infinity. That being said I'd make a small change that would keep the essence of the list together while upping your firepower a bit.

Add the Celestial Guard with Smoke LGL instead of regular GL. The smoke GL synergizes well with the Hsien, and since you have Chain of Command on the Pheasant don't need to be afraid of being aggressive with your LT.

Drop the Pheasant to the boarding shotgun version, and you now have enough points to up the Wu Ming to equip the Light Rocket Launcher.

Once you get some games under your belt and buy a few more models you're not going to be running 6 Celestial Guard.

I've only played a game or two so far, but I'm joining up with some guys going through a series of learning games and I could use some advice building a list.

The guy running the game sent out these guidelines:

quote:

Let's do 200 points again, but if you've got 300 and want to do that make a list. I'll do both.

Format:
We'll use the Spec Ops tournament rules again (take a Spec Op with 12 xp).

Scenarios:
Beacon Race - You'll need specialists to open doors and generate beacons.
Antennae Field - You'll need specialists to control the antennae.

NB: Classified Objectives - You'll need to accomplish 1 or 2 of these, so you might want to field a Hacker, Doctor/Paramedic, Forward Observer, Engineer, and someone with D-Charges.

Suggestions:
Try to field a full Link Team (in most cases that's 5). You'll need to play a sectorial to do so (or Tohaa, they're special). Your Spec Op would be a great addition to your Link Team.
Try to field a model with Airborne Deployment.
Try to field a model with CH: Camouflage or T.O. Camouflage.

We can proxy within reason but here is what I have available:

- Haqqislam Starter Box (Jannisary w/ AP, 3 x Ghulam, Hunzakut Sniper, Naffatun w/ Lt FT)
- Saladin
- 2 x Naffatun w/ FT
- Ghulam Doctor
- Djanbazna w/ HMG
- Hassassin Lasiq w/ Viral Sniper

I don't mind grabbing some other stuff but I only have this weekend to prep and I think the only thing at the FLGS is an Odalisque blister, Sekban Naval Unit box and possibly the Ghazi Muttawi’ah box.

Any suggestions?
