I AM INCREDIBLY BORING AND SHOULD STOP TALKING ABOUT FOOD IN THE POLITICS THREAD
My mother in law posted this huge rant about abortion, euthanasia, the Judeo-Christian values ARE COUNTRY was based on, and today's youth relying on the government.

She also had a full paragraph about how she worked hard for everything in life and didn't depend on the government or anyone else, but she also described how her parents and her (public school & college) education helped her succeed.

These questions always seem to use "÷" where anyone doing higher-level math will just use a division bar to separate the numerator and denominator so you don't have that ambiguity. I can't remember the last time I unironically used the division symbol. But yeah, it's all about being clickbait so people post comments, and then they sell the access all those accounts granted by posting for money.

This. Generally people think of math as concrete system of instructions, but it is possible to still write something out in an ambiguous way. This slate article discusses some of these types of division problems to a good level of detail and the general take away is that the problems are written poorly.

"48÷2(9+3)" isn't 288 or 2, it's just loving bad notation. It is literally impossible to say what the "correct" answer is. It's like trying to deduce meaning from the sentence "I hat through potato". Once you start using parentheses you have to use them to FULLY clarify the meaning. You can't just stop halfway, arbitrarily decide one interpretation is correct and laugh at anyone who gets it "wrong". And, as was mentioned above, nobody doing math seriously would ever use a division sign.

Your friend doesn't understand math. That's fine, most people don't.

e: Basically the thing is, yeah, ok, the order of operations is "FOIL", factor, over, increase, less, (that was how I was taught it in 9th grade). So if you use the idea that multiplication "comes before" division, sure, it's 2. But multiplication and division are the SAME THING. 48÷24 is just 48*(1/24). The idea of division and multiplication or addition and subtraction being in any way different from each other is a shorthand that was made up to make learning rudimentary functions easier for children. Maybe it would be better to teach fractions and negative numbers before division or subtraction.

The problem with PEMDAS, BEDMAS, whatever that gets those clickbait equations working so well is the implication that multiplication (or division) comes first just because they came first in the mnemonic, same with addition coming first just because it comes first in the mnemonic, when it's rather the case that multiplication/division and addition/subtraction are on the same "tier" and you're supposed to do it left-to-right.

On top of the fact that those clickbait equations use the division sign and an unsigned parenthesis/quantity sometimes just to really throw people off even if it's not really something that would ever be used regularly. It's the Facebook equivalent of starting a 0.999~ = 1 thread in a forum.

No, my friend thought that 3+3x3-3+3 = 6. Why? Because 3+9-(3+3). Because she doesn't know how to do arithmetic. There is nothing ambiguous there if you know the order of calculation. She is stupid, not just because she doesn't know how to do this, but because she shut down conversation when people called her out on it, then deleted the post.

The plans to create a mind controlled workers society have been in place for a long time. The current technology grew out of experiments that the Nazis started before World War II and intensified during the time of the Nazi concentration camps when an unlimited supply of children and adults were available for experimentation. We've heard about the inhumane medical experiments performed on concentration camp prisoners, but no word was ever mentioned by the media and the TV documentaries of the mind control experiments. That was not to be divulged to the American public.

It was a well kept secret but I had been chosen as mediator between sides between our country and the Overtakers. I managed to sneak up to the 20th street school where my youngest son was in 1st grade. I spotted him and grabbed him by the arm and we rushed down the street together. He said, "I've been calling you all day, hoping you'd come and get me."

EducateYourself/Forbidden Cures posted:

Not surprisingly, Flexner 'found' that any discipline that didn't use drugs to help cure the patient was tantamount to quackery and charlatanism. Medical schools that offered courses in bioelectric Medicine, Homeopathy or Eastern Medicine, for example, were told to either drop these courses from their curriculum or lose their accreditation and underwriting support. A few schools resisted for a time, but eventually most schools cooperated (or were closed down). A similar scenario was played out in Canada. It was attempted in England against Homeopathy, but it failed due to the personal intervention of the Royal Family who had received much relief and healing at the hands of Homeopathic healers in the 19th century. By the way, the AMA was found guilty of conspiracy against chiropractors in 1987 by a federal judge and fined a couple of million dollars. Here in America, a relentless campaign of misinformation, fraud, deception, and suppression of alternative therapies and healers has been in place for the better part of this century in order to keep highly effective alternative therapies from reaching any significant plateau of public awareness. Control is exerted through "news items" and propaganda from pro-establishment organizations like The American Medical Association, The American Cancer Society, The Diabetes Foundation, etc.; local medical boards; and government agencies like the FDA, The National Institute of Health (NIH), and The National Cancer Institute (NCI), The National Academy of Science, etc. with the full cooperation of main-stream media of course .

It's a loving hotbed of conspiracy insanity.
