I've seen it. Appreciated its style and how soul-crushingly extreme it was, but the philosophical slant turned me off. Looking back though, I think I wasn't in the right mood for it the night I watched it. Might be due for a re-watch.

When people say there is too much violence in my books, what they are saying is there is too much reality in life.
Felt the same way about Frontiers as I had just watched at the tail-end of the initial torture porn wave and I guess I was just burned out on it. It felt like "hey what if hostel and tcm had a baby and it spoke french?" I don't know.

I think it's probably worth revisiting because lately I've been feeling almost nostalgic for torture porn.

Serious family drama about ghosts in a house shot in blue filter is tired as gently caress.

Yeah, regardless of how much porn or torture are actually in Hostel and Saw, if you say that combination of words to someone they are now thinking of those two movies.

It's not about actual porn, you know. It's referred to as torture porn because the audience are deriving their entertainment solely from watching people get hurt. The movies have little attempt to generate atmosphere and minimal plot beyond that required to get the victims to the torturers.

Which, to tie this back to the original complaint about the term, is more than a little reductive. People like things about Saw other than the torture. Like the soap opera-level plot elements where he is her brother, but she is the aunt of that victim, all carried through several movies operating on several different levels of time.

I kinda think that the convoluted plot twists were really where the creators' passion was, even moreso than the gore.

I know that in this case porn refers to entertainment, I was just trying to use both words in that sentence.

Yeah, it was definitely the hook of that series, to the point where the advertising reflected it. It should've been the little Jigsaw doll promising to be a little stinker but in the last few movies, it's like the DVD box set of Six Feet Under or something.

The storyline of the Saw series is like if 24 was a horror movie. Its absolutely the main draw of the series and why it maintained a pretty decent core audience through like six sequels.

Also, Costas Mandylor. I was ridiculously happy to see that guy after Picket Fences, then Fist of the North Star, then nothing.

Hey, he basically reprised his role from Picket Fences, just with more death.

Don't think I saw this posted here, but Bodom has a really effective teaser with an excellent dolly shot:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6L84ReH72UI

It's based on the Lake Bodom murders in Finland in 1960 (which Finnish metal band Children of Bodom named themselves after). I hope it's good, because I'd like Finland to get more attention for horror. Sauna is one of my favorite movies but I haven't seen much else from the Finns.

Speaking of Nordic horror, any others I should keep an eye out for (besides Dead Snow 2)?

Has anyone here seen PVC-1? It looks interesting because it was shot in one, continuous, 84-min take (like Silent House, but actually done in one go). It's on Hulu Plus, so I'm considering giving it a spin.

It has the benefit of not having that teen with the horrible horrible laugh. Apart from that though, the original Fright Night was one of my favorite movies growing up, and while I don't think the remake is quite on the same level, it didn't really disappoint me. I'd say give it a watch, I'm glad I did.

It realizes it isn't supposed to be a serious horror movie, and kind of runs with it.

I just finished this and it was...okay. I love long shot gimmicks in movies and this one was no small feat, but it seemed more melodramatic than tense(which is strange given the subject matter) and I couldn't fully engage with it.

Maybe it's because a good 30 minutes of this movie is a bunch of aimless running around in the woods...

Watch it and tell us what you think.

I find them really hit or miss but Astron-6 has a new joint called The Editor at TIFF this year, which seems to be some kind of giallo parody.

Just got done watching Under the Skin. Wow.

I have no clue what my favorite movie of the year will be. I've seen 4 in the last month that I absolutely loved (this, Guardians of the Galaxy, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and The Raid 2), but so far horror-wise, it's very likely going to be Under the Skin.

The only downside to that movie is that they can't really come up with a good analogue to Peter Vincent's original role as a has-been Hammer actor turned midnight movie host. But it's okay. Their Peter Vincent is still a decent character. It's a shame it didn't get a proper sequel. I would have loved to watch the gang from that movie hunt vampires.

It's extremely good, but Jesus Christ I can't blame you. It's the harshest horror film I've seen since Martyrs. If it helps, though, the pregnant gal survives alright, and there's a legitimate ending to justify sitting through everything.

I think it has something to do with how much of the movie takes place in that one room. People who never saw it or haven't seen it since its release think of it as two dudes trapped in a room torturing each other.
