from /r/buttcoin:

Buttcoin evangelist goes to Kenya and learns that buttcoins cause more problems than they solve.

quote:

[–]dangero 19 pontos 9 hours ago

Idealistic dude goes to Kenya with Bitcoin to deliver poor people from their poverty. They're like, "WTF is this?!! Thanks for the free tablet though. I think I'll sell it when I go home tonight at the local market."

Here's a longer tl;dr:

Basically this guy raised money to go to Kenya and do Bitcoin education and deliver donations. What he came to realize is that these people are so just struggling to survive that they can't really think about ultimate world currencies of the future. They use US dollars instead of their local currency when they need a stable currency so currency stability is not one of the day to day concerns they have. Converting Bitcoins to local currency in Kenya costs more in transaction fees than using Western Union. Tablets are taxed heavily making them twice as expensive as they are in the western world. Most people don't have smart phones or tablets. They've never heard of Bitcoin. Ultimately he feels kind of sheepish because he shows up to orphanages that need $100,000 if renovations with $1000 worth of Bitcoin money to donate, but then has to take an hour out of busy orphanage workers' days to explain how they can protect their Bitcoin and convert it into a form of money they can use. They are grateful and polite, but also confused like, "Why didn't you just bring us some USD? Thanks for this weird thing I don't know what it is really."

He comes home with his tail between his legs and now he says he's not sure about Bitcoin evangelism in the third world. He likens Bitcoin evangelism to what the Catholic church did around the world.

My takeaway was that Bitcoin will be just like every other technology in third world. They will be many years behind and it will be adopted there last, so they will most likely again get the short end of the stick if Bitcoin does take off. They just aren't ready for it.

Reviewed: Xapo’s Bitcoin Debit Card

Marie Le Conte (@youngvulgarian) | Published on August 12, 2014 at 16:16 BST

When the card arrived, we weren’t actually sure what it was. Images of the card on Xapo’s site clearly display the company’s logo, but the card we received didn’t.

Also, the envelope it came in didn’t feature the words ‘Xapo’ or ‘bitcoin’ anywhere, and neither did the accompanying letter.

The letter referred to ‘My Choice’, which, research revealed, is a Gibraltar-based company specialising in digital payment solutions. My Choice is briefly included in Xapo’s website FAQ, but there is no mention of cryptocurrencies on My Choice’s website or its parent company, Wavecrest Ltd.

The card itself is a bit flimsy – it’s not as thick as a standard credit or debit card, which makes it feel a bit cheap. When selecting the card we wanted, we opted for a GBP version, but we received a USD card, and we weren’t alone – Reddit user iwaldo experienced the same issue.

Activating the card is easily done over the phone, and only requires the buyer’s date of birth as confirmation.

We headed to a standard ATM and, first, checked the balance of the card. The screen told us the card had a balance of zero, which was a little concerning as we had loaded the card with 0.18 BTC a few days previously. Despite the apparent zero balance, we were able to successfully withdraw £10.

First, we tried buying a coffee from café chain Pret a Manger using the card, but the transaction failed, so we were forced to pay in fiat, which wasn’t ideal.

In another shop, we used the self-service tills and the chip and PIN option wouldn’t work, so we had to swipe the card instead and sign a receipt, which was only a mild inconvenience.

Viewing transactions

The Xapo wallet is easy to use, with a simple layout displaying all recent transactions. One thing that is a bit confusing is that some transaction amounts are displayed in ‘bits’ and some are displayed in ‘BTC’.

So am I understanding this correctly. Xapo is taking bitcoin, and then giving another payment processor fiat, who then sends out the cards to the bitcoiners. And I assume they've got some sort of fee structure for doing this.

So how is this different than sending fiat to this other company and getting the same card?

It's three times as expensive.

it's even funnier. Several euro or aussie customers received USD-denominated cards so any local spending incurs an additional 3% exchange fee

every way to pay with bitcoin involves a company uncritically taking lots and lots of bitcoins in and pumping dollars out for no particular reason

i mean, at least this one has a fee structure so they're making SOME money

edit: when does Bitpay have to conform to the New York legislation because if they can't stockpile bitcoins they aren't really doing anything at all

also is coinbase still down or what

no if there's a comment period it's a notice of proposed rulemaking, they need to sit down, read the comments and then either republish as a proposed rule or publish as a final rule; the final rule then goes into effect (or has provisions for when it goes into effect)

this process can take a while. i don't know about new york state, but federally you're looking at anything between six months to a year

loving lmao, so much more convienient than just having a bank account with a bank card, especially in loving britain where all bank card transactions are 0% fees on anything. So these guys spent money getting a loving bank card that is worse than the one they would of had anyway, but with the added disadvantage it has fees. This is too hilarious to be true seriously.

i'd be really interested to know if the bug here was that the display showed zero when in reality it "was non-zero", or if the bug lets you withdraw amounts with an insufficient balance.

lol cash withdrawals count as cash advances not purchases, so they're probably paying something like 28% apr possibly with a % fee just for making the withdrawal
