When I got there they were using the LRAD on the protestors and telling them to disperse. The neighbors were trying to go about their normal day, one of them was even walking with their toddler on the sidewalk in front of the barricade. After a few angry people shouting at the cops a guy got on the megaphone and told them "his people needed love and not hate" and then everyone went back to the memorial. Later some people were walking up to the barricade. "Hands up, don't shoot." I caught these policemen using surveillance equipment to watch the protesters from a hill. When they realized I was in my car I told them I was a photographer and they told me to "try not to get robbed." Later I met a reporter from USA Today and I helped her find a way to West Florissant. We were escorted by SWAT past the barricade and to the QT. Someone shot three times at the police, so they retreated to the bridge. Then all the protesters came out to the main street and were hanging around. RT filming the scene. Here are pieces of the munitions used.

Troy Queef posted:the city you have lived in for years and love to bits become a police state that looks like something you see on the news with a byline of "IRAQ" or "GAZA" or something like that. I've found that when I frame the issue of police militarization/abuse in the context of "wow, look at this, looks like (insert 3rd world war-zone here)" More conservative/neutral people will look upon the police (over) reaction unfavorably. Could just be anecdotal, but I think framing the police actions as if they are an opposing army, creating a war-zone, causes something to click in the more right-wing mindset. I mean it's hardly a stretch when the cops are actually wearing Army uniforms, toting M-16, and driving MRAPS. Edit: lol only D&D posters have the disposable income and fragile tempers to waste on buying avs like this. I mean honestly, at least make it creative or more personally offensive, this is just lazy. jrodefeld posted:What I want is for the State to remove itself from the business of police protection. Then permit the people who actually live in those communities to decide what they should do for their collective defense. Then they should choose to pay for a contractor or defense company of their choosing. If the State were involved in any way in this decision, or artificially limited the choices available to that community, I would consider this NOT a free market and not representative of what I am proposing. I don't understand why you think this solves anything. When the State and big business have been colluding for so long, hitting a reset button does nothing to fix the problems with the system because you just removed whatever minor safeguards existed in the existing systems and let those who have looted public funds for their personal gain have even more power and more influence on outcomes.

How exactly will the people who live in these communities make their will known? In a large community, it's impractical for everyone to have a direct role in hiring and managing their defense. Amazes me how Fox News/Right Wing Noise Machine seems to favor "Big government" when it suits them. "SOME GAY COUPLE IS FORCING A CHRISTIAN (white) BAKER TO BAKE THEM A CAKE WITH THE HELP OF THE GOVERNMENT?! OBAMA IS HITLER! THIS IS ALL WRONG!" On Ferguson: "You know, the black community shouldn't be so violent against the cops during this whole ordeal. Freedom of the press? Who cares. Police state? Huh, well it's happening to a bunch of blacks on welfare, so gently caress 'em. Here's a black conservative that agrees with us, and here's a "viral video" that we also agree with which we likely took clips way out of context". Amazing how these people can't see the broader context on the latter, while obsessing over the former. How I just saw this reported is beyond dangerous. Thank god for twitter and the fact that Fox News is growing more and more irrelevant by the day.

jrodefeld posted:I am outraged about this incident. As Radley Balko explained in "Rise of the Warrior Cop" and authors like John Whitehead and commentators like Will Grigg have covered, we have an epidemic of police misconduct and a rise in the use of SWAT team raids. Furthermore we have seen a systematic militarization of our police forces. I don't think it is an exaggeration to state that we live in an emerging police state. Well off white people and privileged groups might find that statement hyperbolic, but poor blacks have long viewed the police not as the protectors of their rights, but rather as their oppressors and their enemies. It must be a horrific feeling to fear for your life, to know that any day a cop could end your life without you having done a thing wrong. Also private security forces are useful for breaking strikes and heads so really turning all of policing is a win/win for rich white guys who don't give a poo poo about poor blacks

An AP article is saying St. Louis County Police have had two dozen patrol vehicles "destroyed" over the last few days. Have I missed all the pictures of cop cars burning in the street, maybe overturned to form impromptu barricades? Did somebody spraypaint "gently caress the police" on them in the parking lot somewhere?

Unfortunately patrol vehicles are not designed to accommodate the heft of the more ample desk jockey and have sustained unrepairable undercarriage damage. Individual APCs have been ordered to assist these brave officers in their pursuit of justice.

At the event which sparked the London riots in 2011 suspiciously old police vehicles were parked in front of the police station where family of the young black man who'd been shot were waiting for answers with a crowd of peaceful supporters. When things suddenly deteriorated these old vans were destroyed and alas the police were forced to rapidly respond with force. So even if proof of police vehicles being destroyed is actually produced it will be very important to ascertain the ages of these vehicles if possible.

(regardless of the fact that there are systemic issues in the police force, accusing someone who wasn't involved isn't going to help) One would think the "response" from the police in that case would be a sound alibi to protect the officer who DIDN'T murder an unarmed kid in broad daylight, but that would require some sort of accountability, so it probably won't happen in any case. At the very least, withholding further information to wait for a response gives him an opportunity to come forward and argue his innocence, if it wasn't him. It's insane that police transparency has become such a laughable concept that anonymous internet inquisitors are starting to look like the most effective means of forcing accountability. Just put loving lapel cameras on every single cop and have done with it.
