Also check out "birp" aka "blalocks indie rock playlist" (https://www.birp.fm) they release a monthly 100+ song playlist free download as torrent or zip which is always full of awesome random indie music from obscure bands. Ive found some real diamonds in there, and theyre always good background music

Rotten investigator!
I will soon be back in class and I'm looking for good music to listen to while driving home after a long day of work + class.
Ideally stuff quite energetic to prevent me from getting tired.

Some example of stuff I like:

- C2C
- Soulwax
- Wax Tailor

Things off the cuff from my personal taste:

- Birdy Nam Nam (While being, like C2C, a french turntablist group, BNN tend to be a bit "harsher" than C2C, YMMV)
- DJ Shadow
- RJD2
- Four Tet (esp. "Pink")

The rest would depend on how far you want to go into downtempo and other genres, but for the general "energetic but not RAVERAVERAVERAVE":

- Bonobo
- Moderat
- Pretty Lights
- Ratatat

HTH. :3:

e: For a personal inquiry, I most recently found Movits!, especially their song Balaclavaboogie. Now, what I'm looking for are songs with a similar really good and dominant beat, much like that song, any vocals completely optional. Most electro swing is too slow, and I'm having a hard time finding songs as fast/hyping as that one. Please advise.

I'm seconding DJ Shadow in the strongest possible terms. He is my favorite DJ ever and Entroducing might be in my top 10 favorite albums. "Midnight in a Perfect World" might be the best song for driving at night man has ever created.

Look up Tom Middleton's "The Trip" volume 1. Disc one is kinda upbeat and disc two is more downtempo but still groovy as gently caress. Some of the best music mixing I've ever heard across any genre. You can play it in just about any situation.

Volume 2 isn't as punchy but is OK.

Also Ministry of Sound's Breaks 2003 "Kid Kenobi", gently caress the first two discs off and get into Disc 3 "Deeptech". Some intensely gnarly deep, airy cruisy mellow breaks.

An old album by Pendulum (different group than the Drum & bass band) called "Three Knocks". It's old as gently caress but still hits a weird spot.

Rare Grooves Volumes 1-5, old time underground reggae. Pretty cliche' free. Also the "100% dynamite" series (aptly named 100%, 200%, 300% etc for every volume released)

Also any Soul Jazz Records release

Also seeing as I'm kind of straying a fair bit away from your genres listed, I'll go out on a limb and say I've always enjoyed blasting Harry Belafonte in a car after a long day. Old time classic singalongs like Banana song always make me feel better.

Also second on Bonobo (Black Sands is the best IMO) and DJ Shadow.

I love Madlib and Quasimoto et al, too

Also Beastie Boys "In Sound From Way Out" is a loving awesome instrumental acid jazz type album. One of my faves to this day.

I'd like to try to get into Reggae. I really don't know any big names other than Bob Marley & the Whalers and the rest of the Marley family.

I've been listening to Sister Nancy after a friend showed me "Bam Bam". I really like the minimal approach, the chill tempo, the strong bass line, the horns, and that her voice is the centerpiece of the song. I'd be interested in more female reggae singers as well.

So, just some big names in Reggae to try? Some classics, some modern greats, etc.? Or great albums, even compilations?

I'm not a strong authority on reggae itself, but if you really like a minimal approach, you might enjoy dub music in addition reggae, which Lee Scratch Perry is the Michael Jordan of:

Franchescanado: For the Sister Nancy tip, try Soul Jazz's The Rise Of Jamaican Dancehall Culture & Dancehall 2 comps. It's not really reggae, but the thin blue line probably isn't worth explaining at that point in your explorations.

For the Wailers tip, first make sure to check out the Soul Rebels and African Herbsman LPs, then check out The Gladiators' first record and Soul Jazz's Studio One compilations (Studio One Roots vols. 1-3 and Studio One Groups are particular highlights). A lot of Marley's stuff is genuinely up there with the best reggae ever made, so you shouldn't go about it like "ugh I need some Real reggae".

For a compilation, listen to the Trojan: Roots Reggae collection. It'll have a ton of great stuff and offer a good jumping off point. Spotify has that one, and other Trojan compilations (dub, dancehall, ska, and so on).

For an individual artist, check out Peter Tosh. Early Masters is a good entry point, or his album Legalize It.

If you're into the whole thing RDJ throws at you, try out:
-Squarepusher (distinct jazz influences, I personally love Ultravisitor and Hard Normal Daddy)
-µ-ziq
-Luke Vibert
-Venetian Snares (His best album is probably Rossz Csillag Alatt Született, however he likes to dissolve his music into ear grinding breaks and generally has a fetish for the Amen break, so not all he has is enjoyable to most.)

You already have Autechre, make sure to listen to Tri Repetae.

Been getting back into Tom Waits and Nick Cave, especially Orphans, Brawlers and Bastards and Murder Ballads. I've gone through both of their discographies and was wondering if anyone knew of any other artists that do similar stuff? I especially like the dark folk/country stuff that they do. I'm gonna throw my personal taste in here, pick and choose what you like, I'll try to stick to the lesser known groups, even if the subgenre is somewhat obscure already. It's mostly very beat dominated electronic music, with little exceptions

Mostly DNB:

- Spor (I love his music too much to omit him on a DNB list)
- Dieselboy
- Utopia
- The Upbeats
- Evol Intent
- Phace
- Ed Rush & Optical
- Seba (the one to break the Neurofunk trend, he mostly makes liquid dnb, one of the few to do so well, imho)
- Black Sun Empire
- Noisia
- DJ Teebee

Mostly (Berlin) Techno:

- Len Faki (Berghain resident and general badass)
- Actually gently caress it, the entire Ostgut:Ton lineup.
- Steve Bug
- Blawan
- Boys Noize (Not actually obscure at all)
- Monomood
- Shed (I don't think he's on Ostgut:Ton anymore)

Random "I loving LOVE EVERYTHING ABOUT THIS" with little regard of genre or grade of mainstreamness

- Gesaffelstein (Aleph is amazing)
- Moderat
- Jon Hopkins (Immunity was an album of the year in the past for me, amazing stuff)
- MOVITS! (Swedish hiphop married to swing music, sounds really weird, works amazingly well)
- ZZT (Tiga and Zombie Nation making techno, weird concept, amazing execution)
- Four Tet
- Squarepusher (I will endlessly fanboy Ultravisitor until the end of times)
- Bonobo
- RJD2, DJ Shadow, C2C (these three as an umbrella to turntablism which is a maze in and of itself)
- Birdy Nam Nam (They have 3 set albums, for lack of a better term, spun off the latest release, check them out as well, runs under the name "Defiant Order Remixes Project")
- Linda Perhacs and her album Parallelograms (This is soul/folk/whatever, definitely not electronic, and make sure to listen to the rerelease instead of the 70's release, they absolutely butchered the mastering on the first one)
- CloZee
- Martin Jondo
- Daedelus (This guy is an absolute force, his studio albums are more mellow, but check out the sets he did for amazing control using little more than a Monome)
- D.I.M. (I found him on Boysnoize label, he puts out very good electro)
- Parov Stelar (The originator of the Electro Swing trend in the more recent years, also an absolute beast live)
- The Propellerheads (still awesome, sadly not as well known)
- Fluke

Uh. Yeah. Hope you like some of this, it's me :spergin: about the music I like.

e: gently caress I say Amazing a lot :psyduck:
