When you start poking around on OS X you start to realize that this "BSD core" everyone loves is a bunch of half-crippled, incredibly out-of-date BSD tools on top of the Apple-only XNU kernel. If you have the latest version of OS X, you can get XCode for it, and after downloading however many gigs worth of useless IDE bullshit you'll have a compiler which you can then use to install less-crippled, less out-of-date versions of the tools you want. But you can't change the window manager, because we must have a bar at the top of the screen and a dock at the bottom of the screen and a bar at the top of each window and god forbid you have a sane way to organize or manage your windows, just dump them on the desktop and shuffle through them like an animal you piece of poo poo. I work with a lot of computer science Ph.Ds who inexplicably use OS X, and never will you see such looks of confusion as they stare at the screen, wondering where the gently caress their editor window went, and how many fingers they need to stroke the touchpad with to get back to the right virtual desktop. Fun fact, I don't remember if it's default or not but there's a setting that will make the Terminal application store all scrollback ever, so eventually you'll launch it and it'll spend 15 seconds loading 3 GB of logs from disk and you'll wonder where your memory went. If you want to learn more about *nix, pick a real *nix. OS X ain't poo poo. Edit: To paraphrase the Wizard of Oz, "Oh no my dear, I'm a very good OS. Having their email in the signature was useful for sending customers the external email address of another employee without having to look up which company they were contracted from or if they had a legacy address from our old system. Not saying this place was the same, but its possible they used to have a similar system and just kept the requirement to include the email in their signature standards. Or maybe they print all their emails because thats a thing in corporate environments for some reason.

Back when I was in college, I used to try out all these different Linux distros. I started with Ubuntu and then tried out Fedora, Linux Mint, Arch Linux and a couple of others before I just settled on Ubuntu. I would spend hours and hours setting these distros up and then in the end they'd all end up kind of looking like Ubuntu. I rarely every tinker with computers anymore because I do it at work and when I'm at home I just want things to work. Sometimes I wish I had an iPhone so I can't tinker with it. I have a Nexus 4 and I just use Cyanogenmod. Same thing with Linux, I used to try all these different ROMs because they had interesting features or claimed better battery life but I usually get about the same now. I enjoy the stock-like look and just use the stable versions of Cyanogenmod. Every once and awhile I'll get curious and flash a new kernel or a new ROM but I always end up back with Cyanogenmod. Same reason I usually stick with Ubuntu now I guess.

I also see HF in there. I work in EHS as a lab and chemical safety specialist at a major research institute, and we put the fear of God into the students about working with HF. It is sneaky dangerous in that it may not even burn your skin when you are exposed, but you are in big trouble internally. The fluorine ions will absorb through your skin and begin to leach the calcium from your blood. If that doesn't cause you to have a heart attack and there are still fluorine ions floating about, they will start to leach the calcium from your bones. Not a pretty way to go out. Most of the labs on campus use it to remove oxides from the surface of silicon chips, but one lab is doing research that necessitates the dissolution of quartz. Quartz is chemically identical to glass (SiO2) and pretty much the only thing that will dissolve glass (or quartz) is HF and this lab uses gallons and gallons of it. We require anyone using HF to have tubes of calcium gluconate handy to neutralize the fluorine ions before they can do real damage and give us time to get you to the hospital.

Goddamnit. Got a new rx for my glasses a month ago. Constant headaches now (though I can see crystal loving clear with them on), and once I take them off, I can barely read the monitor @ 3 ft. With the old rx, I could take them off and see clearly for a good 20 ft. Need to measure the PD again I guess, to make sure I got it right on the first order (yay for mail order glasses). The rx isn't that different from my old glasses; not different enough to cause this poo poo.
