She is alleged to have bought the poison from a site on the secretive online world known as the dark web, which allows users to be anonymous.

She paid for it using the virtual currency bitcoins, jurors heard. It arrived in a wax candle.

Blockchainpedia / Wikicoin

I was thinking about a decentralized version of Wikipedia, where changes to articles are stored as transactions in a blockchain. This way, no centralized organization like Wikmedia is needed to oversee the project. The articles themselves of course can be stored anywhere, all you need to do to verify validity of an article is to calculate its hash and look it up in the blockchain. Instead of having algorithms verifying these transactions and creating consensus, humans could do this, and get a “mining” reward in return in the form of Wikicoin. Something needs to be put in place to prevent lazy miners or verification/creation of bad articles. Perhaps article edits get a daily minting reward for every day they are not pulled/overruled/amended. Or, Wikicoins need to be spent in order to change an article, as a deterrent to frivolous/malicious editing.

eh, i'll stand by what i said. if you accept the dystopia on its terms, dagny taggert starts off as a sympathetic character fighting to preserve her father's legacy and stand up for her principles. the writing is always a little self-indulgent, but it doesn't really go off the rails until the third act. the dystopia doesn't really hold up, and the villains are weak as characters, but it's not really worse on either account than, say, the hunger games. (of course it's way worse in a bunch of other ways; i know this is a controversial opinion, but atlas shrugged is not a good book)

i'm losing count of how many scams there are within these scams

quote:

Purse.io locked me out of my account after a successful transaction and i'm out almost $200 (self.Bitcoin)
submitted 13 minutes ago by whymeworld

Signed up with Purse.io to buy some bitcoin. The way they work is basically users put up their amazon etc orders and escrow bitcoin in return, and you order it for them and get it shipped to their addresses, and when they receive it they release the escrow bitcoin to you.

I picked up a deal for a little under $200 worth of btc. It was a wishlist of about 10 items on amazon, which I purchased and got shipped out to the end-buyer. Everything was going fine until the supplier for one of the products emailed me to say it was sold out, and asked me if it was fine to ship a similar product. I messaged the end-buyer on purse.io and relayed the messaged, to which they agreed and said fine, so I told the supplier to go ahead. At this point most of the items had already shipped and the buyer had received some of them already (they sent me messages via purse.io to confirm this).

A couple of days later I logged in to my purse account to get the message "This account is inactive. Please contact service support for assistance."

Weird. So I dropped them an email asking the reason, and they only replied a day later with:

"Your account has been flagged due to suspicious behavior. This is likely because a purchase on Amazon was reversed. In order to reinstate your account, 1) Provide an explanation as to why the purchase of the item(s) was reversed on Amazon. 2) Clear copy (scan or photo) of your government issued photo ID."

I figured this might have been an issue with the product that was replaced, so I provided them a copy of the email trail + my passport copy. No reply for another three days, so I messaged them again and got:

"I'm afraid I cannot reinstate your account without verification as your account has been linked to suspicious behavior."

This was 3 days ago, and i've sent them at least 5 or 6 emails asking what information they need to get it re-opened. Meanwhile, i've already gotten notification emails that all the products have arrived, the buyer has released my btc escrow into my purse wallet (which obviously I cannot access) and has given me a positive rating. I am not getting any reply from these guys, i've sent them screenshots of my amazon account and orders to verify everything, ID copy, etc and still no reply at all. Not sure if anyone's faced something like this but I really don't recommend dealing with these guys at all.

TL;DR Made a deal to buy almost $200 worth of btc on Purse.io buy fulfilling an end users amazon wishlist, after paying full amount and having all products shipped, purse.io locked me out and ignoring my emails even after sending them all verification documents requested & more for over a week, not responsive at all.

so one of the greatest scammers of all time, frank abagnale of "catch me if you can" fame was asked what he thinks is the greatest scam of all time

quote:

In the October issue of The Atlantic, Frank Abagnale—who outwitted authorities in the 1960s as he flew around the country as a fake airline pilot and serial check forger—is among a handful of famous folks with varied expertise in swindling who were asked to identify the "greatest scam of all time." His answer is blunt, and the message is clear: Bitcoin will destroy your life.

"Bitcoin will make you the target of hackers who will steal your money," Abagnale said. "More expensive than other forms of payment, Bitcoin is a way to rob people of their life savings. Most important, if something goes wrong, the money may never be recovered."

bitcoiners of course have a sensible answer

quote:

"I hate to call him out on it, but Frank's kind of old," said Jinyoung Lee Englung, director of communications at the Bitcoin Foundation. "The people catching on to bitcoin and really investing are under 40. These are guys that came of age in the Internet, so this technology wave isn't new to them. To Frank, it's foreign."

but nah, he's an old, so who cares
