The Tasmanian Government will cut an extra 500 jobs from the public service after failing to win support from the state's Upper House for a pay freeze.

Treasurer Peter Gutwein announced the Government would withdraw the bill minutes after the Upper House voted to delay it.

He said delaying a vote on it is was effectively rejecting the bill.

The move will mean 500 more full-time equivalent public service jobs will be cut on top of the 700 already planned to go.

The Government's move has been condemned by unions, with several questioning its motives for pulling the pay freeze bill.

The Community and Public Sector Union's Tom Lynch said the move was "arrogant".

"The Government is saying we're not prepared to talk to you but we will be sacking 500 more people, this is extraordinary behaviour by an incredibly arrogant government," he said.

"Every Tasmanian needs to see that this Government is saying that they would prefer to break their promise around frontline workers... than actually negotiate a wage outcome.

"I mean who is behind this? This is an industrial agenda, it is not to do with negotiation around a wage freeze.

"They had a bill that they put up this week which would have destroyed the industrial relations system and now we are seeing their vengeance because the Legislative Council dared to challenge them."

The Health and Community Services Union's Tim Jacobson said the Government has always had another agenda.

"I think it exposes the Government in terms of what this all really has been about and that is it's been about fundamental changes to our industrial relations system, using a pay freeze as a smokescreen," he said.

The Nursing and Midwifery Association's Neroli Ellis is alarmed frontline jobs losses could now be realised as part of the Government's budget strategy.

She rejected the Treasurer's assertion that unions were not ready to negotiate.

"We are prepared to negotiate, we've shown good will right throughout this," she said.

"We've certainly given over 60 solutions to government to implement, very few of any of those solutions have been implemented and they would save real money," she said.

"So we would have...have to ask whether they're really serious about saving money or whether they just want a bandaid fix of sacking people.

It's not at all shocking to see how little coverage this incident receives compared to a guy who probably/maybe was going to attack a random person. Imagine the reaction if the situation was reversed and it was a Muslim person threatening a Catholic school.

I work with a taekwondo instructor who instructs with a Muslim bloke from Melbourne's eastern burbs who is pretty devout and active in his community. From conversations with him and information I've gotten from other sources, it seems there is something of a schism forming in the Islamic community around the Dandenong area.

Phone posting from work so can't really elaborate a lot but there are plenty of people from within this community who have approached authorities about questionable activities at certain mosques in the Dandenong area. The surveillance and cancelling of passports were possibly as a result of insider tip offs and moderate Islamic persons are sick of both being painted as extremists by the media but also from apparent 'rogue teachings' by certain scholars.

I've now had two muslim co-workers come to me at different times to explain how they're modern muslims and they don't understand nor care for the 'old fashioned' tenets. They told me this because they clearly want to distance themselves from what they call the traditional 'fundamentalists'. The fact that felt the need to do this kind of makes me sad.

Anecdote
I hate to drag beardgate up again but one of them did say to me that you could easily identify, with what he described as "some accuracy", the more traditional / conservative muslims in the community by their facial hair.

The prominent climate change sceptic also said irrelevant occupational health and safety regulations were hindering the ability of teaching staff to send students to mines to gain practical experience.

Learning had become too narrowly focused on specialist areas and universities were churning out students who lacked a broad education and had little chance of finding work in their study area, he said.

“That is the plague we have, the plague of dunces,” he said.
